Out of all the HORSE games, Stud/8 generally creates the most and the longest lasting multiway pots. The split-pot structure entices many players to play loosely on 3rd street with a variety of hands and then chase them all the way down to the river. Unlike other games, there will usually be two players who are happy to be betting and raising with each other, ensuring anyone caught in the middle will be paying several bets for the privilege of seeing subsequent cards.
In other games, play in multiway pots usually focuses on protecting your hand and forcing your opponents to fold. In stud/8, you often need to take care that your opponents do not fold as a result of your actions, as you may have a lock in one or both directions. Additionally, you need to be able to quickly assess situations on later streets in order to determine if you have a profitable jam or not. Let’s look at some of these situations street-by street and determine what the best actions are.
