Paying the VIP’s time collection
Sometimes when a game gets real short people wanna quit. Now I’ve seen this happen more than once. I’ve been on both ends of it even. Often when the games short and a rec player is gonna quit and everybody else knows game will break if that happens, sometimes a player or players will offer to pay the time collection for the rec to make them incentivized to stay and gamble.
Is this rude? Predatory? Both? Neither?

I don't think there is anything wrong with someone offering to pay the time for someone else if otherwise he is going to leave and break the game. I haven't seen it often but a few times before. First it's best to ask the floor if you can skip one time collection though; when I used to play time games in Atlantic City they would often be willing to do that.
How is this different than passing money between stacks?
Skip one time collection = freebie?
Yes; when I regularly played time games in Atlantic City, late at night when the game was shorthanded and in danger of breaking, the table would often ask the floorperson if they could skip paying for the next half hour. They would often agree, and sometimes would skip as many as half of the collections - so the players only paid once an hour instead of twice. And the time charge had already been dropped because the game was shorthanded. So instead of each player paying $10 per hour (in the 10/20 LHE game), sometimes late at night they would only have to pay as little as $3 per hour.
As with any of these types of spots .. how much is 'too much'? I don't think that paying time constitutes too much. It's not like the chips are actually going into a stack like they would via a prop bet.
Asking for a reduced rake when short is common .. glad to see it also applies to time games.
In a weird side note .. our casino recently implemented Bomb Pots. While you they do allow for reduced rake in a 'regular' hand, they are insistent upon getting the full $7 for a BP rake no matter the number of Players at the table. GL
My casino charges higher rake for bomb pots. Makes sense since they take longer.
