God, I miss oldschool chess youtube. Thanks for posting this. I used to watch this channel all the time back then.

Granted, there is higher quality stuff out there today than there was back then, but the signal/noise and stupid drama is just awful.

I put it here to get around it someday

that was a yawner...

Sad if true .
I give it a shot anyway .

I give it a shot anyway .

it's just that Joe was completely naive to Magnus... and most everything that was talked about is already deeply known to anyone that follows the Genius that is Carlsen.

Yeah doesn’t sound interesting .
I’ll give it a 5/10m shot for fun and see how it goes .
Thx

Just came across this graph, not sure if there were others made , or if this was a one time thing .. its quite old , but still very interesting

there's little data that i could find about the graph , so im struggling the understand the full length of the stats

so this was a study done by lichess , where they analysed all the WC matches with the strongest engine at the time (Stockfish 14 i think )

x - years
y - ACPL (average centipawn loss ) in a simplified way 'accuracy of the moves made'

just explaining for those who might not be up to par , the lower the ACPL , the more accurate the players played aka 'carlsen would absolutely crush Steinitz' if the match would be possible with these stats

now i think these include the rest of the games they played after the WC match + the WC match , im not sure why the bars are sliced in different positions , some line go higher than the others , and what those points mean

so i dont think this is just the WC match , but eitherway if anyone has any insight on it , im quite curious

1886 - Wilhelm Steinitz vs Johannes Zukertort (format first to 10) ---- 10 - 5

1889 - Wilhelm Steinitz vs Mikhail Chigorin (first to 10.5 points , max 20 games) ---- 10(1/2) - 6(1/2)

1890 - Wilhelm Steinitz vs sidor Gunsberg (first to 10 wins , if 9-9 champion holds) ---- 10(1/2) - 8(1/2)

1892 - Wilhelm Steinitz vs Mikhail Chigorin (unclear) --- 12(1/2) - 10(1/2)

ill skip lasker

1921 - JosΓ© RaΓΊl Capablanca vs Emanuel Lasker (irrelevant) ---- 9-5 (unreal ACPL by capablanca, very close to what you get 100 years later)

1927 - JosΓ© RaΓΊl Capablanca vs Alexander Alekhine ( unknown) --- 15(1/2) - 18(1/2)

lets skip till 1954 as it was a 5 player 'league' to determine de WC . Mikhail Botvinnik won with ease tho with 14/20

1954 - Mikhail Botvinnik vs Vasily Smyslov (bo24. draw = win for the WC ) --- 12 - 12 (MB holds the title)

1957 - Vasily Smyslov vs Mikhail Botvinnik (same) --- 12(1/2) - 9(1/2)

1958 - Vasily Smyslov vs Mikhail Botvinnik (same) --- 10(1/2) - 12(1/2)

1960 - Mikhail Botvinnik vs Mikhail Tal (same) --- 8(1/2) - 12(1/2)

1661 - Mikhail Tal vs Mikhail Botvinnik (same) --- 8 - 13

1963 - Mikhail Botvinnik vs Tigran Petrosian (same) --- 9(1/2) - 12(1/2)

1966 - Tigran Petrosian vs Boris Spassky (same) --- 12(1/2) - 11(1/2)

1969 - Tigran Petrosian vs Boris Spassky (same) --- 10(1/2) - 12(1/2)

1972 - Boris Spassky vs Bobby Fischer (same) --- 8(1/2) - 12(1/2)

(1975) - Karpov crowned WC after Bobby Fischer refusal to play (reasons are not 100% clear)

1978 - Anatoly Karpov vs Viktor Korchnoi (first player to win 6 games ((draws not counting)) would win the match ) --- 6 - 5 (32 games were played)

1981 - Anatoly Karpov vs Viktor Korchnoi (same) --- 6 - 2 (18 games were played)

1984 - Anatoly Karpov vs Garry Kasparov (same) --- 'no contest' -- Karpov started with 4-0 lead , and after 48 games and 4 months , score was 5-3 and what i found ''' The match was halted by FIDE president Florencio Campomanes, citing player health, despite both players wanting to continue. '''

1985 - Anatoly Karpov vs Garry Kasparov (bo24. draw = win for the WC) ---- 11 - 13

1986 - Garry Kasparov vs Anatoly Karpov (same) --- 12(1/2) - 11(1/2)

1987 - Garry Kasparov vs Anatoly Karpov (same) --- 12 - 12 ( Kasparov retains the title )

1990 - Garry Kasparov vs Anatoly Karpov (same) --- 12(1/2) - 11(1/2)

1993 - Garry Kasparov vs Nigel Short (same) --- 12(1/2) - 7(1/2)

1995 - Garry Kasparov vs Viswanathan Anand ((first to 10(1/2)) --- 10(1/2) - 7(1/2) (18 games were played)

2000 - Garry Kasparov vs Vladimir Kramnik (Bo16) --- 6(1/2) - 8(1/2)

2004 - Vladimir Kramnik vs Peter Leko (14 game match. draw rule) --- 7 - 7 (Kramnik retains)

2006 - Vladimir Kramnik vs Veselin Topalov (12 game match. NO draw rule) --- 6 - 6 ---> tiebreaks(bo4) (25m+10s) --- 2(1/2) - 1(1/2)

2007 - 8 players double round-robin --- 1st Viswanathan Anand 9/14 , 2nd Vladimir Kramnik 8/14

2008 - Viswanathan Anand vs Vladimir Kramnik (12 game match. NO draw rule) --- 6(1/2) - 4(1/2)

2012 - Viswanathan Anand vs Boris Gelfand (same) --- 6 - 6 ----> tiebreaks(bo4) (25m+10s) --- 2(1/2) - 1(1/2)

2013 - Viswanathan Anand vs Magnus Carlsen (same) --- 3(1/2) - 6(1/2)

2014 - Magnus Carlsen vs Viswanathan Anand (same) --- 6(1/2) - 4(1/2) --- (given the era , probably the worst WC match ever played in terms of accuracy)

2016 - Magnus Carlsen vs Sergey Karjakin (same) --- 6 - 6 ----> tiebreaks(bo4) (25m+10s) --- 3 - 1

2018 - Magnus Carlsen vs Fabiano Caruana (same) --- 6 - 6 ----> tiebreaks(bo4) (25m+10s) --- 3 - 0

2021 - Magnus Carlsen vs Ian Nepomniachtchi (same) --- 7(1/2) - 3 (1/2)

if someone is up to par on what those other unknown lines/stats/points mean , i'm really curious

xx

Sad no Paul morphy .

Here is more about the graph and how it was made: https://lichess.org/@/lichess/blog/exact...

I took one of my better tournaments and manually ran the games through and got a combined ACPL of 47. I scored 9/12 and my post tournament rating was 2277 FIDE. But I know I'm not better than Tal-Botvinnik 1960, for example. So I'm not sure how useful this stat is. We did have the benefit in 2003 of more theory. And maybe its harder to have a low ACPL against stronger competition, or players with a style to make the position super complicated.

I mean, Tal "hung" his knight against Botvinnik. This move increases his ACPL, which tells you just about how useful of a stat it is, imo.
