Begginer help

I want to get into poker / online poker, I know the basic rules of poker but I've never really played a game, apart with some friends a few times.
Any suggestions where to play poker online to start practicing, ideally not with / with very little real money.

It probably doesn’t matter what site you play. As a beginner you probably won’t do very well until you have learned some strategy (keep reading threads on here, find and study some preflop charts, etc. to help with your learning curve). Most sites have a low stakes no limit hold em game that has $0.01/$0.02 blinds with a maximum buyin of $2 - shorthand for this is 2NL. I would strongly suggest starting there and remaining there until you can beat that game fairly consistently and build up a bankroll.

Do you live in the US or Canada? If so, you might want to try Global Poker or Stake.us. They both use the sweepstakes model, which kind of doesn't mean anything if you aren't familiar with it. They do have play chip games - which you should only play to get familiar with the software and make sure you understand the game. But they also let you play for Sweeps Coins - which is there way of saying you can play for real money, but you don't actually have to give them money in order to play. They have different ways of getting free money (Sweeps Coins) that you can use to play. If you lose, you don't lose anything and if you win you can actually take out cash. ClubWPT Gold has the same model, but they are just starting out, and currently only have some tournaments - they say cash games are coming.

The level of play at the lower stakes is not very high, especially on Stake. I forget what they give you to start, but then you can get a free sweeps coin every day if you log in and claim it. Play around a bit, and if you win, great, and if you lose, come back the next day and get another dollar to play with.
