[EP's Strategy in Straddled Pots]

Lost around 1320BB in my most recent session so I decided to share some interesting knowledge I learned today, in an attempt to remind myself that I am still improving everyday as a poker player and shift my mind to something positive.

Today I learned that in straddled pots, the earliest seats actually have more to gain by raising as much or more, especially with deeper stacks. This does not sound right to me at first. I always thought that by default, all positions are required to tighten up their range in a straddled game, especially EPs, considering you are effectively playing against 3 blinds.

Then the more I thought about it, the more it actually makes sense. When you are EP in a straddled pot, the pot gets bigger while the number of the opponents who have position on you remain the same. So in a way, you are incentivized to open-raise more.

More details can be found in this article by Andrew Brokos:

I am reading his book: "Play Optimal Poker" and have been enjoying it so far.

Please leave a comment if you have anything insightful to say on this piece of knowledge that I just learned, or anything that has to do with straddled games in general. Much appreciated~
