Possible staking deal. advice needed

Ok so i will keep this as short as I can..

I have been here since most here were even born. I've done the professional thing in my early days.

So I have a potential offer from some richer than me friends and family who have seen my health decline most likely from my hard years at the tables.

They are considering offering me a staking agreement in upwards of 5k to 10k our maybe 20k? with standard profit sharing. The initial proposal included a stake in the wsop main event.

I refused this deal. My friend who wants to put together a proposal makes a lot of money and is interested in staking me with no pressure from myself which may include family members.. This is not my suggestion and I've always said no to friends and family staking me.

I succeeded well during the poker boom as a better than average player. I've played in numerous wsop events including 10k events back in the day. I am not a slouch at poker.

However, these are my questions and concerns which I communicated....

The game has changed; I'm not the same player i was. I've been out of the game and do not think a positive roi for investors or players is possible. All bets would be high risk. Do not expect any returns.

This would have to be money you expect to lose.

That being said what is the optimal play here. not just for me.

I concluded that if this is real I would do some research and restudy the game. ask my friends here and learn the gto decisions and the new nuances of the game. I would research, practice, and study before I risk other people's money.

So im asking for honest opinions about this situation and also the best training books and resources that are out there. the best reputable sites would also be beneficial. At present I play at ignition and ACR not really trusting either but don't play much.

Should I consider this? Honest opinions appreciated by a former pro..

I would take a deal with plan to play lower buyin big field tournaments (around 5K or so total buyins) that have many recs. I would assume you are over 50 so play the 1K senior for sure. Then maybe if you made money and feel good fire 10K Main if backer agrees.

But the Main Event is a long slog. Depending on your health it may be difficult, so another fact to consider

Then I would simply try to get your game back to where it was before using whatever training methods you may used back in day. Wouldn’t flood your mind with new things as it may be counterproductive.

That’s what I would do anyway.

First given your health is failing you need play the shorter events. This will also work better with a higher variance style that recognizes early you might still be in the top half of players but later in the tournaments it is unlikely you will be so you want to play taking that into account. Unless you think your friend is unaware of your health and that you have been out of the game this seems like disguised charity to me and you should feel fortunate to have such a friend.

Very good points. why Im not bringing this up with old friends with my health issues and keep most issues on the cuff. She is aware of my health issues. I did not bring up this type of opportunity and have always shot it down if it was brought up In my playing days I never played on a stake i always said no. I could never play on a stake mostly because I didn't need to and never felt comfortable with it.

I have no intention of making this a charity case. I'm not making this a make a wish thing. This was a complete offer out of the blue. Yes im blessed to have a few good friends over the years who make good money. But this is fake **** right? A few old folks hanging on to the past or them trying to relive my glory days and let me live with a small chance of a big pay out as they do the same.

The questions I have...

1. Best training and learning tools to relearn poker in this era.

2. Feasible roi's in this day and age.

3. can a high risk investment be realistically feasible in today's poker climate or is an old folk like me if i secured that stake just another TJ Cloutier or name another washed up bro...

4. Can I allow this type of investment or think it can give me new thinking and motivation for a comeback of just let it go and think my friends are crazy. Even though that belief in me may turn certain things about my life around in a new direction. is that payoff enough?

5. If the opportunity is real, is it something I can pass up.

6. If it is real, should I choose to pass it up even if others want to put hard earned dollars on it?

My discussions were that Im not putting up the 10k for wsop. those odds are to long and Ive played 2 10k buyin events though not the main so i do not need that. Never played the main though. would be fun. but I walk with a cane. I do not have the mobility for vegas.. my friend is like we will get a scooter. i said gtfo!

That realistically i would play the choctaw wsop with much smaller buyins and play more events if the capital was on the table. so im smart about that no travel expensives and free rooms.

I am 46.

to be fair. Little more about my history with this game called poker. since we all learned early to get as much information on our opponents.

I put myself through college playing heads up limit. I then made a career after that that for 10 years. mostly a short handed limit player. i had big scores that led to 10years in the game playing professionally.

I got my big break after literally grinding 1-2 limit online games. Had a dude say you guys are better that the 5-10, 10-20 guys on this site.hen i got my big score at party poker. a $30 tourny for a score for 5k. that dude was right. ****s us low limit grinders. we were better.

Never looked back. was now playing 10-20 6 max. played professionally for 10 years. Did well in a lot of tournaments like most folk here. The boom busted. i survived for like 4 years mostly propping for smaller sites. 100% rakeback is real. Played 2 10k events an numerous smaller buyins events with some decent cashes. lived well for that 10 years then the **** dried up as we all know. Black Friday was real and the rest of it dried up. I held on but it became unbeatable. I put in about 5years after black Friday.

So finally I said I'm out and went back to school and got a master's in social work. Big mistake as i was now strapped with 100k in student dept and a job that paid $16.50 an hour with no benefits.
.

So fast forward a decade and some things in between but you see how my friends who chose the more profitable routes might have a little more intention on betting on me since i took the road of helping other folks and they said let's just make money. im not judging. they're decisions were more correct in hindsight. My health has failed me and now I have like two friends who want to put up 5k each. good friends I know. Even if I try to talk them out of it.

Man, you and I have a lot in common besides the whole health thing. Played relatively pro or semi pro then went back to school and started working on my msw. Haulted right now though because cant find a practicum. -Go get licensed ffs, youll make 110/hr

Anyway......I think you're over thinking this. You're 46, your mind is still sharp. They want you to be their lottery ticket it sounds like. I dont buy a powerball because I think its a good investment (you said high risk investment), I buy it for those few hours before the draw thinking what id do with the cash.

Just free yourself mentally from feeling bad about losing their money. You're obviously a good guy, that's your dilemma-once you're ok with losing their money youll realize they wanted to do it and you can all enjoy the ride together.

Who knows? Maybe youll min cash...happens all the time.
