Bankroll Management query

Wow!

I always believed it is best to start at the micros and move up with the bankroll I am surprised by your recommendation to go directly to 50$

Can you elaborate why this and not the "normal" grind up the stakes?

I think if you're studying a lot and then play live 1/2 or 1/3 it's totally fine to just hop in rather than grind it up online first. Live 1/3 players are so bad that if you study even a little and you have a good job you can become a winning player without losing too much money (at least in expectation... variance can obviously cost you a lot so this is dependent on how much money you have to throw into a hobby).

I don't agree with the above poster's advice re: jumping into 50nl online. I think the odds of being +EV at 50nl in a short time period are so low that it's just torching money to jump right into 50nl. Starting at 5nl or 10nl makes more sense - play 10k-20k hands and if you are losing horribly then you'll have saved yourself a lot of money compared with jumping into 50nl.

It IS almost certainly a waste of time to actually grind up a bankroll from 5nl to 50nl, but I would play 5nl until you have reasonable confidence that you're winning at that stake, then move up to 10nl, etc. E.g. let's say that over 20k hands at 10nl you are winning at 8bb/100, or you're winning at 2bb/100 but you have reasonably good qualitative evidence that you're playing well and are willing to take a shot at 25nl. Well, in order to grind up from 10nl to 25nl you'd want to increase your bankroll from $1000 to $2500. Even at a 10bb/100 win rate this will take you 150k hands. If you have a 20k or 30k sample where you're winning 8bb/100, it's a huge waste of time to keep grinding if you make like 80k/yr at your job and can just add 1500 to your bankroll from that.
