MISC/RANDOM/BS Golf Chatter Thread
Figured since every other forum has these...this one deserves one too.
Random golf chatter
Should I buy this? / is this used X a good deal?
Stupid/dumb questions that don't deserve their own thread.
Random observations etc etc
awesome! hit 'em straight
The course, Grover Cleveland, has always been a local inside joke since they do brag about having hosted the 1912 Open but the course has always kind of sucked. I was pleasantly surprised yesterday as they have made massive improvements. The fairways were darn near country club quality. Greens also in great shape.
$16 to walk 9 and well worth it. And it's really $16 to walk 11 since 9 green is nowhere near the club house.
👍
from the Grover Cleveland website:
Nine of the “1912 U. S Open” holes still exist (today’s 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th holes)
do u remember if these holes were substantially different from the other holes on the course?

I don't. We only played the first 11 holes and none of them stood out.
Well, there is a 230 yard par 3 (hole 6) but that's not on your list. I did manage to par that one.
On your list is hole 1. 350 yards and zero trouble. But to try to imagine people playing that hole 112 years ago is something.
Also, holes 2 and 4 are 400+ yard par 4s. Seems impossible to get there in 2 back in the day.
unless you were a master of the long hickory
Buddy of mine got his 2nd career ace this past week at Firestone South, 217 yard par 3. His other ace is at Lancaster CC (near Buffalo) on a 340 yard par 4.
I'd have to imagine that of anyone walking the earth with exactly two aces that's gotta be in the top 10 of most impressive.
the course that i played the most when i started golf in 2001 has two 400 yard par 4s in a row, holes 11 and 12. playing with a 3i as my longest club for the first year turned these holes into the best challenge on the course. par felt like an accomplishment on these holes and being around the green in 2 shots did wonders for my long iron confidence. 12 is a particularly nasty all uphill old school tough hole, directly into the prevailing winds. there is a big oak tree guarding the right side of the 3 tier 12 pace wide green, and the fairway slopes hard down to the right. making par on 12 after any miss right on your first or second shots is an extreme longshot. making par after a good drive that finds the left fairway shelf is hard even with woods and driver in the bag(but i believe it was lengthened to 425 or so around 2019). par with hickory at the 400 yd length probably meant that you're the ringer.

Willie Campbell shot 89-90=179 at first US Open in 1895 to bag 6th place and a cool ten bucks

What's the best to use for seamless shot tracking on the course? I was looking for a new GPS handheld and came across Shot Scope H4. That looked interesting because of the shot tracking technology but there's no way I'm going to tap the sensor on the club to the screen before every shot. Not only do I just not want to, I'm sure there will be times that I forget.
Arccos works pretty good, but you have to mess with it during or after your round for accuracy. Also if you want to listen to music from your phone, you can't. I cancelled after 2 years because I stopped using it, but it's fun to play with.

Thanks. Yikes, suddenly the Shot scope doesn't look so bad, lol.
I only ever have to mess with Arccos during the round for putting. I use the Link Connect to set the pin location and then take about 20sec a hole to input the putts. You could write down the putt lengths instead and do it after the round if you wanted.
I never used the Link, but I had usually a dozen putts that Arccos didnt pick up and a handful of missed shots with other clubs after every round.
Mine almost never picks up my putts (does better with phone than Link Pro), but I would say it misses a shot every 15-20 rounds for me, excluding things like me leaving one in the bunker and it not realizing it's two different shots, etc.)
Had a guy at work retire recently so the company threw him a party at his golf club. I asked him if I could roast him and he agreed, so after everyone said all their nice things about him it was my turn. Here are a few bits. Feel free to rate my material
"Golfing with David is frustrating because he is so indecisive. Every hole it's 'should I hit 5 iron or 6' or near the green 'should I chip it or putt it' ". That's why his favorite golfer is Arnold Palmer. He never could fully commit to either ice tea or lemonade"
"David is such a stickler for the rules. The last time I played with David the course was closed but he got us in. It was just the two of us on the entire course and we had our own cart girl. When we got to the first green she said "Hey guys...since it just the three of us, you can have your way with me right here, right now". Since David invited me I did the right thing and told him he could have her first but he said "I can't. You're away".
David loves golf so much he uses golf terms in everyday life. His doctor told me he suffers from Peyronie's disease...which is where his erect penis is bent, not straight. Or as David calls it, his "Dog Leg Left"
And David is anal about his equipment. The course here has those ball cleaner machines after every third hole, but that isn't good enough for David, so he brings his own portable ball washer... a local migrant kid. And I wanna go on record that I thought this was wrong, until David told me he pays the kid two bucks an hour. I guess when you are getting ready to retire you can throw the bug bucks around like that".
^^^^first one is a groaner but they got much better.
Hope you were among like minded friends with that last one.
yeah I started mild...luckily H.R. wasn't there 😀
Nothing confirmed but it’s pretty obvious Augusta National lost a bunch of trees from Helene.
Not exactly a tragedy within a tragedy.
They'll just buy some more.
Has anyone ever played Brookfield CC in Buffalo? If so, any good?
