Non-PGA/EPGA Golf Discussion (Champions & Web.com Tours, NCAA, USGA, etc.)

I thought this might be a good idea for a thread since non-PGA discussion tends to scatter itself about the forum every now and again. Rather than have a few random Web.com or Champions Tour posts mixed among the PGA thread(s), this can serve as a catch-all for news and discussion relating to tournaments that aren't run by the major professional tours.

As it pertains to current events, the first order of business will be tomorrow's semifinal matches in the US Amateur:

Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas, USA#1) v. Gunn Yang (KOR)
Corey Connors (LOL Canada) v. Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Maryland, USA#1)

Discuss.

Griffin Wood has played his last 27 holes in 89 strokes(29-30-30) at the Korn Ferry Veritex. Cut was 7-under.

US Open Sectional qualifying here in Dallas yesterday, one of the tour qualifiers due to the Colonial this week. 11 spots available, 9 LIV golfers in the field. One qualified.

Infer what you will about the overall quality of LIV.

The director of golf at my club said they were asked to host sectional qualifying this year. He passed because he needed shuttles to go out to the 10th hole cause the course they were going to have it on does not go back to the clubhouse on 10. I told him he was crazy and that he would get more than enough volunteers to use their own vehicles if he had to in order to make it happen.

So my question is would they really have a sectional qualifier at a course that only maxes out at 6700 yards?

Doubtful. Also, Florida's qualifier is typically in the greater Miami area.

Now, a local qualifier there would definitely be possible. And 6700 yards in Tampa is much longer than 6700 yards here in DFW.

Did Sergio lose a 7 for 6 playoff??

yes...yes he did.

1st alternate from that qualifier, what are the chances he makes it in the field? Also strange to see Reed WD from it, wonder what his reasoning is.

If forced to wager I’d go with he does make it in. As one of the tour qualifiers, its place in ranking the sites for alternates is pretty high. Also, the USGA has to error on the conservative side for qualifying spots so come week of there could be an additional spot or two before any possible WD’s.

As far as Reed goes, tour players pull out of these for tons of reasons including not wanting to play 36 in one day.

True, most aren't Master champions, top 50ish golfer in the world and in the middle of their careers. I assume he was burnt out from the PGA and thought he could just register for a different qualifier, especially since his game suits US Open set ups.

Garcia got in this morning as 4 alternates filled the remaining spots. Adam Scott also got in via the OWGR, he would have been 61st but Murray was removed from the rankings and he slid into the 60th and last exempt spot.

and, remarkably, we are two results away from having Sunday's U.S. Women's Am championship match be a rematch of last month's U.S. Girl's Junior championship match

Anna Davis really blew her QF match today (several times over)

I spent Saturday watching the Champions Tour at Phoenix County Club. They were in town for the season ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

What a fun day. Obviously way smaller crowds than I'm used to dealing with at the Waste Management Open each year. We were given free tickets to get on the grounds but then we bought the pass that gave us access to The Oasis behind the 17th green. Their attempt at a party hole, though the average age was probably over 60.

We got there before the first group went off at 10:30, then hopped around the course till that first group was around 13 or so. Then we headed over to 17 to grab seats before it filled up and we watched the rest of the day from there. 17 green was right below us, and we had great views of the par 3 15th as well.

At The Oasis they do $1 birdie beers. Every time someone birdied 17, for the next 2 minutes, $1 Michelob Ultra in 12oz cans...2 per person. Not a bad deal! The crowd reactions with each make or miss was a lot of fun. Though after about the 5th one the excitement died down a bit as people still had piles of full ones in front of them they hadn't gotten to yet.

It was a small field - only 35 players - so it was a pretty short day with only 3 hours of tee times. That was perfect for us since we didn't want to commit 10-12 hours to the day. If you get a chance to get out and catch an event, do it. We'll almost certainly be back to do it again next year.

thanks for sharing that ec...seems like a fun experience.
