My Keto/Fasting journey

My Keto/Fasting journey

Figured this would be a good place to talk/vent about my weight loss journey. Not really expecting a lot of activity 😀

Gender, age, body type etc can definitely create significant variance to off the shelf calorie calculators but I'm also in the camp of 'no way you're not losing weight on 1k calories per day at your weight'. Your body etc but that's extremely difficult to believe.why not weigh & measure your food and post for a week or so? Got to be easier than not eating for 3 days!also yep,

No dumps! I tried but it was a nogo 😀 Today is a bit more encouraging. Got on the scale first thing and was down another .8 Then I worked out and took that illusive dump and got on the scale again down another .8 So down 3 lbs since starting the fast. Still seems small?

I only record my weight on the last day of each month and every Friday. Since it's the last day of the month my results so far:
Feb 235 (started feb 21 at 236.6)
Mar 227.8 (-7.2)
Apr 218.6 (-9.2)

So I am making progress albeit slower than I would like. Still +10 lbs over where I was 6 months ago. Although faster than anything I had done in the last 5 years. Since I didn't start my aggressive fasting schedule until 2cnd week of April am hoping May will be even better.

Some folks have noted interest/curiousity abot my calorie counting, food weighing etc. Today is a "one meal" day meaning I eat once and only once. No snacks, just one large meal! I used to nibble on stuff all day. But the more often you eat the more often your insulin spikes which is bad.

Anyway this was the one meal for the day. 1000ish calories and less than 5g net carbs.

3 eggs (75 per) = 225 cal
2 sausage patty (110 per) = 220 cal
3 Keto bread (35 per) = 105 cal
1.5 tbls butter = 150 cal
3.2 oz meatloaf =256 cal
1 mini tortilla = 25 cal
.5 oz parmegain cheese = 55 cal

Total = 1036 cal

That should be plenty to hold me until tomorrow. I ate a little more yesterday (about 1300ish) in 2 meals. But tomorrow is cheat day and will likely land in the 2000-2500 range and a few extra carbs although keeping it below 50g

And you only drink water?

And you only drink water?

Yeah, except for a diet Mountain Dew wakeup call for my morning cafeine fix. I skip those during fasts though.

3 days of no poop? 😮!

I go at least three times a day; I eat high fibre, so have no insight into ketosis. (Yesterday was 70 grams of fibre, for example).

Also, a rule of thumb is that losing 1 pound requires a 3,500 calorie deficit. (It's not a perfect metric, but can be ballpark useful).

You've lost 16 pounds in just over 2 months. My maths shows that that is around a 1,000 calorie per day deficit, so your maintenance will something like 2,000 to 2,500, which feels sort of reasonable. (Some of the loss is likely water weight, so there is noise in this guerrilla maths ).

Keto can be fiber challenged since the bulk of the diet consists of fiberless eggs, meat and cheese. I do get fiber from the keto bread and tortills as well as avocados. Avocdos are a super food for keto because they are high in both fat and fiber but only have about 2 net grams of carbs.

I have been very strict with carb intake keeping it less than 10 net grams per day. Theoretically you can consume up to 50 net grams of carbs and stay in ketosis. I likely won't go that high but plan to start incorporating more fiber in the form of salads and vegatables that are simply low rather than no carb. This weekend I am gonna try ultra low carb pasta and marinara which is very high in fiber.

But my maintenance level is waaaaay below 2000-2200 calories per day. 2000 calories a day and I gain weight pretty rapidly. It is known 😀

Figured I would start posting my weekly weight result that I record every Friday. This week was bittersweet. I lost 4 lbs which is great but it involved a 72 hour water fast which is discouraging. Anyway:

4/25 221.4
5/2 217.4

The only way I can see a +200lb guy's maintenance is below 2000 cal. is if you sit at a desk all day and do 0 exercise.

It's mind boggling but true as I am living it. I am extremely active walking 10+ miles per day and other excersize as well. Even so gained 30 lbs since last August on 2000 calories per day. This is why I am taking extreme measures now.

Why are you talking to a doctor instead of an actual expert? Also that 7lbs is total BS.Ultimately there isn't anything magical about being old that suddenly means basic scientific laws don't apply. You just move less and eat more. If you're into science, this may help bring you around: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PM...

If you aren't, best of luck wondering

30 hours into this weeks (48 hour) fast and feel pretty good. This is the point where I pretty much pass hunger. At the 26-28 hour point is when I feel it the most. That is also the point where I get into really strong ketosis. This is my 5th week in a row with an extrended fast. 2 72s and 3 48s. Not sure if I do it again next week?

After this fast I am going to experiment with my diet by upping my carbs from less than 10g per day to the 25-30g range. Hopefully that won't mess me up.

Yeah, absent actual calorie counts this seems reasonably accurate. There are also likely some systematic errors that can inflate this. (Systematic weighing issues with butter, ancillary amounts used for cooking, fitbit inflation, YTF-esque "no calories tho?", etc)

Ultimately it boils down to this being so absurdly far outside biological norms that it would support he's a breatharian and evolved to support himself on air. 15 cals per lbs is a pretty normal estimator for healthy normally active people. Here we have an example of someone who is kinda old but claims exceptional activity (20k+ steps per day and other exercise) but claim to gain weight on < 10 calories per lbs. Maintenance with this activity level is about double this (prob more). Feel free to decide whether his biomechanical efficiency and ability to extract calories from food or whatever other woo exists that can make him 2x better at storing fat and moving than normal people.

I lolled.

My 20k steps per day usually takes me 2h 10min of actual walking at 3m/h (5km/h) speed on a treadmill (16K steps) or outside on a regular walking route, in addition to my regular walking around during the day (about 4.5K) My #1 block to losing wt. is underestimating how many calories I eat every day. 3/week I have at least one meal out with family or friends and it is hard to calculate if it is not a place with a menu that lists calories.

Broke my fast at about the 49 hour point. Breaking these fasts almost makes me feel guilty 😀 Had an omlette and a salad. Very tasty and left me fully sated so I won't eat again until midday tomorrow. I am really liking this fasting and feel I may have found my niche.

I didn't start this thread to argue with armchair experts or keyboard warriors who profess to know more about my situation than I do. Like I haven't had an entire lifetime of knowing exactly how my body reacts to excersize and what I eat 😀

I wanted someplace to record my journey and especially both the ketogenic and fasting aspects of it. I was hoping there may be discussion from other keto or fasting enthusiasts. It has taken me since last August but I think I have finally adapted to the keto lifestyle. As time goes by I am certain I will be introducing more and more carbs into my life but am pretty sure I will maintain mostly on the low carb side of the tracks.

Fasting on the other hand is what I am most enthusiastic about. Will I continue to do a 48+ hour fast every week? Hell no! But knowing I can is a powerful mental tool. I do expect to do a 72 hour every month forever though. And intermittent fasting is my lifestyle now until they put me in the ground. It works for me and makes sense to me but I am still learning. I have watched hours of youtubes about it and read lots of articles and just today a couple of books I ordered from Amazon arrived. I really wish there were other fasting enthusiasts here to kick things around with. I am honestly surprised at how well I have taken to a fasting way of life.

So you lie about your caloric consumption. ****ING SHOCKER.

**** off dude. We need less **** tier logs.

No lies. You however seem to be an anti-social douchebag so I believe a block is in order!

Do a basic math model. Write it out.

I'll wait.

Use some basic physics assumptions about movement efficiency.

Full stop. You're lying. YOU ARE FULL OF ****ING ****.

I will give you 100k if you sit in a room with a 1k food supply, vetted by multiple sources and gain weight over a month. Free dieting eh? You eat the same **** now and you're about to die? Sign the **** up fat boi.

Take whatever caloric intake you think you're consuming and multiply by something between 1.5 and 1.8 henceforth to get the actual number of calories you're consuming. You are not counting correctly.

Trust me I severely overestimate and always round up. But this thread is about Keto and Fasting and not my calorie consumption. I know what I eat and I know my activity. It is very focused.

Is your plan to stay on keto once you reach your target weight, or to reintroduce carbs? (My understanding was that long term ketosis could cause dislipidemia, but I may be behind on the most recent research.)

But you’re doing keto and fasting to lose weight and counting calorie consumption is for the same reason.

If you choose to totally ignore everyone else in here, you should still listen to and take on board what Guy says because he has read and watched more content on all these subjects than you will in your lifetime and he knows far more than you ever will. That’s a fact.

It’s hard when you open a thread and it feels like you’re getting flamed to not be defensive but you should open your mind to what he says and prescribes and I guarantee it will help you achieve your goals

We had that ex Foreign Legion loon in here last year posting all those Keto videos and making all kinds of guarantees.

Can’t remember his screen name but he disappeared a while ago?

Not sure? I feel like I have finally adapted well to a keto diet after a lot of fits and starts. In any event I am likely to stay on a low carb approach. This week I have started introducing a few more carbs in. I had been very strict keeping it less than 10g net carbs and a couple of days this week I went up to 25g with mostly healthy salds and vegatables. Theorectically you can go up to 50. But I have staed in ketosis all week despite the carb addition although my levels are much lower now than they were during the fast.

Thread delivering. It's almost like a higher power decided to troll thremp personally, since he is living too nice of a life.
