The (older) boys are back in town….. yet again

You may well know a few of us from previous Pulitzer winning trip reports such as “The Boys are Back in Town” and the creatively titled sequel “The Boys are Back in Town Again”. The third part of the trilogy, inspiringly titled “The (older) boys are back in town….. yet again”, our very own Return Of The Jedi if you will, is coming soon to a mobile device near you soon.

Guitarist, Watbri, Watbri Jr, Oscar, Ryan (unconfirmed) and myself will be lit up by the bright lights of Las Vegas next weekend for a few weeks. The intention is to steal from the whales whilst feeding the fishies. We’re self-styled poker eco-warriors really.

Oscar (the highlight provider from 2023 trip with his second place finish in the $10k 2-7 TD), arrives Thursday 30th May, Guitarist and myself on Sunday 2nd June, Watbri and Watbri Jr on 9th June and Ryan hoping for 5th June. When we’re coming from all corners of the globe (Australia, UK, Dubai and NorCal), it’s ain’t an easy diary alignment.

The plans are as usual - play a lot of poker, donk a few $$$ at the pai gow tables, and enjoy some great food which includes our annual trip to Craftsteak. No hookers and blow for us (I speak for myself there really) as the old ticker may not take that level excitement. We’ve got a good record in not doing a Blasted and between us, we’ll get a few pictures and stories added each day.

From a poker perspective, what can you expect? Well, Oscar has two runner up finishes in WSOP events, both in 2-7 TD. Third time lucky we all hope. And whilst Oscar and myself may be firing a couple of mixed game WSOP events, all of us play NLHE….. to varying standards of course. There should be everything from $1/$3 to $10/$25 being played between us so expect the notated hand histories to range from “that f###ing fish hit his f###ing three outer on the river” to “I had blockers to the back door flush draw and his range was super capped to one pair based on his small raise from mid position on the brick turn” or something suitably GTO inspired. Clearly those second insights won’t be coming from me.

With 9 days still to go before I board my 11 hour flight, it seems a little early to subject you to pictures of shoes and $3.50 subtly hidden in the shot. Suffice to say I’ll be rocking up with $15k (most of it courtesy of having 5% of Oscar’s $192k win for his aforementioned 2nd place in event #38 last year), a pre-completed FinCEN 105 form and hopes of fame and fortune. A couple of the others will have more, a couple of the group perhaps a bit less. But between us, we’re expecting a feeding frenzy akin to piranhas around a drowning sheep.

Hoping to catch up with as many of you as possible whilst there. For those that can’t make it to the 2024 WSOP, our wish is that this trip report allows you to, at least in part, vicariously share the experience.

Run good, be lucky, and see you at the felt.

Back in the saddle in Resorts World. Within an hour I have been 2 outed on the river for a $900 pot and then 8 outed by Oscar for an $1100; all in on the turn with two pair against his overpair. The river paired the board.

Oh, hold the press. Add in being in the wrong side of another 5 outer, a 7 outer and 6 outer for the next half hour, albeit in smaller pots. This is unreal.

No time on the river? I think a number of the Girls Gone Wild type videos were filmed there.

- Winning a couple of hundred at the $1/$2 game at the Riverside, Laughlin. This poker room has the best views of any poker room I have ever played in - straight through the oversized windows to the jet skis bombing up and down the river.

That's one of the nice things about Laughlin -- you don't find many casinos in other locations with windows in the gaming areas! Love to ride those water taxis from place to place, too.

Headed away from Sin City with Guitarist and Oscar for the day. We hired a car, drive through Boulder City, an excursion across the Hoover Dam, and then down to Laughlin. We came back via Primm and then got back into Vegas 11 hours after leaving. An absolutely fabulous day full of laughs and giggles and some new experiences. A few of the highlights……

awesome experience - been wanting to do a day trip like that with friends for a long time but never had - will have to do it in the future when I'm out for longer !

Nice day out with the boys, thanks for telling us about it.

Sorry for the continued runbad though. :(

In answer to the questions about Laughlin, we didn’t get time on the river with the jet skis. We were under-prepared for that and tbh, it was very hot outside. But those out on the river looked to be having a lot of fun.

2/5 nl at Bellagio with dunc

After yesterday’s away day, today was all about trying to grind back some of the late night losses. A short session of $1/$2 PLO at Bellagio, a longer session of $1/$3 at the Horseshoe and also a decent session of $2/$5 back at the Bellagio all yielded positive results. My bluffs got through, my big hands held and I flopped my first set of the trip. The three sessions netted just over a $1k profit.

Watbri, Watbri Jr, Watbri Jr’s friend and Ryan all got into town today and it was good to hang with Watbri and Ryan as we battled for chips at the Bellagio $2/$5 This was despite being out in the sportsbook area with this awful felt in the picture above!

Great job, on the comeback trail, Dunc!

The Watbri and Doc threads are triple range merging. This is next level.

While I never minded being put out in the sportsbook overflow for 2/5 at Bellagio, that felt is horrendous, my god lol. Nice results in the cash games, continuing to straighten out and get hot at the end here.

Playing $2/$3 at Horseshoe….

Bad news - dumped a stack with an overpair to a set
Good news - won the hourly high hand promo with quad Kings for $100.
Bad news - still finished $419 down for the session.

Sadly busted out of the 1p daily level 8 with a set over set
Me 2s. Villain 8s

Subjected myself to the HORSE daily Deepstack again. Late reg by half an hour and was almost at first break when I finally got a seat. Got lucky in a few spots, which you need to do in such an incredibly fast structure, and had a 2x average stack which was still only 14 big bets. Then got into an O8 hand with the table fish.

I open with A35Tccxx and he calls. Flop is A38T rainbow and we get 4 bets in. Turn is a 5. I check call. River is a J and we check check. He has AA no low but scoops. Maybe I was the table fish and not him [emoji2369]

The rest went shortly afterwards in a hand of razz. Out in 55th, 14 short of the money.

So, I just did something many would call reckless. I exchanged this…..

for this……

Admittedly I sold 64% of my action to ease / share the pain! Starting at 1pm tomorrow? Straight into day 2 with 2/3rds average stack.

Please wish me luck. I’m gonna need it!!!

In other news, Oscar bagged after day 1 of this event just now, and Nigel has cashed the $1.5k, and bagged and tagged for the night. Great effort!

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

At least you can say you didn't get knocked out on Day 1.

Good Luck!!

oh snap - I can't wait for the updates on this 2-7 10K.....epic shot taking right here! GL GL GL GL

Awesome! Good luck today.
