TR, Vegas, 3 weeks in Dec (PLO, Food, Misc.)
Went on a 3 week trip to Vegas from dec 8th to dec 29th, here are my observations, recommendations and things i think were mentionable.
1. Living:
stayed for 8 days in an amazing suite provided by one of the OGs in here MyrnaFTW for a super fair price, we met twice (for keys and payment), can only recommend him, very relaxed and reliable guy.
then moved into the Luxor, had it booked already from home (europe), bc i timed it so that i could keep the really cheap dates from the calender, plus i'm MGM Gold, so i don't pay any resort fee, which made it super cheap altogether.
i had a room in the newer tower, which was really good (not compared to the suite at Vdara, but that is difficult to do), but i've seen a lot of hotel rooms in Vegas and this was really nice, super big, nice view etc.; Casino itself is obviously outdated, but i basically passed by every day only on my way from the room to the self parking.
attention: if you ever stay there, and have a car, make sure you don't try to come in or go out when there is a game in the Allegiant stadium, parking situation during that time is basically non-existent (no spaces), plus police is blocking a lot of roads around, so it's super annoying and difficult to even leave.
2. Poker action:
have made this trip (winter) a couple of times now, things changed a little bit:
in the weeks before christmas when both wynn and aria had tournament series going, the action overall was great, there were constantly 3-4 5-5-rock games at aria and wynn, and another 4-5 1-2/5 games (all PLO, it's all i play).
this changed dramatically with christmas (and the end of those series), action died down, sometimes just 1 5-5 rock game in each of the places, and 2 1-2/5 games, that also didn't go through the whole night, but stopped at one point to resume sometime in the morning.
quality of play was a mix of the usual regs, with a few non-regs and some real whales, so good action overall. i'd say the games were a tiny bit softer at wynn (compared to aria), but not much, which is a big difference to the summer WSOP action, were aria is basically reg infested and the games are often unplayable from my experience.
then there is the new room at the Venetian, played there 3 times in total, they try to establish a 5-5 plo mix game (all 5 card, the mix is 5 card high, big o, and 5 card doubleboard with 10 ante), the game is set to start on friday at 5 pm, you can put your name on the list at any time before that and it won't get deleted (contrary to the usual 2 hours you get in PokerAtlas).
the first time i got there the game was great, good action, i consider myself a rather mediocre bigO player, but compared to what i saw there i was rather ok in that format, and basically crushed the game in the other formats.
unfortunately the second time the game didn't go, although there were 22 people on the list, only 2 (haha) showed up, so no game. played a little 10 ante doubleboard instead for a while, but that was very boring and tight, so left rather quick.
the room itself is very big (like 50ish tables), but i don't like it very much. dealers are ok, floor personal so so, and food service rather horrible (super slow, expensive, and bad), they talked about bringing back the possibility to order from Grand Lux Cafe at Venetian, but that wasn't possible at the time i was there.
3. food:
had some amazing dining experiences, love the 888 Korean BBQ place in Chinatown, but met a guy while playing, who is a real expert (besides being an overall great guy) in korean food and knows all the places in Chinatown, so we went to Mikiya Shabu House (which was very good) and then another time to Chubby Cattle (which was even better), the quality of the meat was out of this world, the have a salad side bar (which kimchi, seaweed salad, corn, rice, all kinds of sauces etc.), where you can go yourself and pick anything you like as much as you want, then you have a tablet at your table, to order any kind of meat or fish, and although there are waiters who bring stuff, some of this meat is brought by an automated robot, who drives around the place automatically, super funny, but also very reliable and well executed.
all the places were packed, depending on what time of day you go, with long waiting times ... but absolutely worth it.
Overall a great trip for me, made a decent amount of $$$, and had a great time.
Usually when i come to the US i try to stay longer (bc it's a long flight, and i wanna make it count), but doing it like this, concentrated and super focused, with lots of energy and motivation to play, really brought out the best in me and the results were accordingly, so probably will change into that mode and accept the extra costs for flying back and forth more often.
Thx for reading, if i left anything out you'd like to know, just ask.

glad you had a nice trip
Glad you had a good trip. I did chuckle (as someone a 3.5 hour flight to Vegas) how 3 weeks was a concentrated trip. Concentrated for me would 70 hours….need to adopt euro tendencies regarding time off/holiday. Someday I’ll do a week in Vegas.
thank you guys.
well, i'm already somewhat older, and with 9 hours time zone difference, the body takes 2-3 days to adapt to the jetlag. when i would do say a 1 week trip, i'm basically just adapting only ;-)))
(envy you guys living so close to Vegas)

Assume you stayed in a Tower Elite King room at Luxor. How did you reach MGM Gold btw; lots of poker hours or some degening on the side? 😀

yeah, that was the room type
gold: been that for a lot of years, back then you needed like 90 hours of play at Aria for example (i think it's more now) initially, but i have that easily (way more actually)
no casino games degening for me :-)
(besides PLO, which some consider extreme degening ;-)))
btw:
there was a lot of talk in another thread (forgot which one) about the "enforcement" of the straddle in the 5-5/rock game at Aria (20 after the rock), wanna add to that from my latest trip:
It's entirely depends on the table and people present ... i've been in games, where the one lonely "not-straddler" was constantly harassed by multiple people, up to the point where i stepped in (even though i'm ok with the straddle), bc it was simply too much and borderline psychotic
in other rounds when the whole table was doing it and a new guy came in, he was asked friendly, and if he didn't want to it was totally fine and nobody said anything.
also: looks like the house kind of instructed their dealers to go with it, bc a lot of dealers who came in asked at the beginning, if the whole table was straddling, and then reminded people when it was their turn and they forgot.
Thanks, good info about the extra straddle.
I played there once in the summer and just went along with it as everyone was doing it. Didn’t realize it happened all the time.
Not a fan of it as you’re not really playing a 5-5-10 game if there’s always an extra straddle.
Also agree with what you said about the games
during WSOP being very reg infested.

Absolutely, it’s a 5-5-10-20 game, yet the buy in max is still 2000, which means it’s not really deep
I never straddle, no matter what anyone says, because it's a surefire guarantee to be dealt crap in that hand.
Glad you had a great trip and the lodging worked out well! Thanks for the Korean food tips. I used to live in Korea and love the food.
