Early start on my birthday trip 3/27 - 4/2

My birthday trip to Vegas is one month away, but I’m so looking forward to it I thought I’d start early.

We used to go to Vegas four or five times a year, but now it’s only two or three times. We are just too busy with work, and we have a new granddaughter who was born in August. Plus, flights got more expensive, and my husband has his own business so doesn’t travel as much. No more diamond with Delta, which is very sad. Knowing we won’t get upgraded to first class is a little depressing, but he has lots of drink vouchers!

We’ll be staying at our timeshare at the Elara. I love this place. The rooms are beautiful, it has a nice pool, and the location is perfect for us – right across the street from Aria. Of course, in Vegas right across the street is a 15 to 20-minute walk!

We have two dinners planned. My b-day dinner at Sparrow + Wolf and a dinner at Pampas – I’m a foodie and my husband loves meat. Granted, I love meat, too, so I enjoy Pampas. We don’t have a Brazilian meat joint here. I got a pretty good deal on Groupon, and it’s on the way to the Aria.

We are doing the tasting plus wine pairing at S+W, and I cannot wait. It’s a bit extravagant, but you only live once. I spend most of my money on travel, food, and wine, so this fits right in. (I buy my clothes from Goodwill, lol.)

We usually go snowboarding in the spring, but my husband is still recovering from long Covid (doing much better) and a back issue, so that’s definitely not happening.

Other than eating, we’ll be drinking a lot of wine/champagne while playing mainly PLO at Aria. We usually know someone at the table, and the dealers remembered us. I hope it’s the same this time. Should be because we were just there last fall. We did miss our winter trip, though.

I’m going to update this a little with how my poker is going live. So far this year, I’m down $1,700, but $1,000 of that is because of crazy $25 double board PLO bomb pots and a couple of luck boxes.

I have a NLHE game tonight and a PLO game Friday night, so I’ll post about those soon.

Roll and shoe picks will come closer to the date.

Last night's 1/2 NLHE game went very well. I played well and got lucky a few times, which is how a good night usually goes. I took this V for a few hundred (again):

HH from last night: I (cover) raise CO to $12 w/ AJ, BTN calls, V1 min-raises from SB to $24, I 3bet to $75, BTN folds, V1 calls. Flop: 2c8h9d, he checks, I bet $100. Turn 8d, he checks, I go all in for his last ~$150. He calls, river is a low card and MHIG (he has QdTh).

I picked my spots and played aggressively and ended up $855 for the night. Will probably play this game Wednesday and PLO on Friday. Skipping the Sunday games, although they are good, because the weather is so nice.

Making my reservation for Pampas today (you have to reserve to use the Groupon) and getting a $50 comp from S+W by signing up for some app (I'll just delete it when all is done) -- both had to be done w/in 30 days of the trip. Getting excited!

They always have 89 or AA when I try that.

You forgot to update us on hot girl with prostitute friend!

also need pics

LOL. She was there Monday night for a little while, lost a few bucks I think, but didn't stay long. Her friend was wearing a crocheted outfit (crop top and pants) with very obviously no bra. I'll try to sneak a few pics, but you won't be impressed. These are not high-class big city girls 😉

Just found out this tournament is the day after my b-day at the Venetian: Deepstack Showdown Feb/March 2024 - Event #61 - Pot Limit Omaha Bounty! Starts at 2:10 p.m. (we can comfortably sleep in) with a $300 buy-in and $7,500 guarantee. We are very excited about it.

We don't play many tournaments anymore, but they can be fun. I cashed (20th) in a WSOP circuit event PLO tournament a couple of years ago, so maybe I can do the same at Venetian.

not sure why sobriety, size, or location matters

Was going to question this, but I get it now. LOL. I think for some men/women all of those things matter, though, one way or another 😉

sure they do, and everyone has their own family recipe with a different ratio of ingredients 😃

look forward to the updates

Replying to sub-looking forward to reading about your upcoming trip. Good luck on the PLO streets!

Last night's PLO went very well. Some of the worst players to ever play the game were there to give their money away. If it weren't for one of the last hands and a couple of bomb pots, I would have been up much more, but alas it was only $760.

The hand (we are six handed): BTN V1 straddle $10, SB fold, I pot to 35 ($1,600, AA67ds, no hearts), V2 call (<$250), Big Stack (covers) calls, V1calls (<$250).

Pot (~$135): K92 rainbow. Checks to V1, and he bets $100 w/ ~$125 behind. I call, V2 calls, big stack folds. I don't lead or raise because the big stack could have anything, and it would suck if he re-pots. Not a whole lot helps me on the turn, but I'm not folding vs the short-stackers who could have anything.

Turn ($440): K92 Ah, putting two hearts out there. I bet/pot, and they both call for their last ~$125. River is a 3d and V1 takes it with a wheel. He had bet flop w/ K45T. V2 had Q high hearts (and really nothing else -- maybe a gutshot on the flop).

If I take $1,000 out from my husband's bad play, I'm now up $80 for the year (I like the sound of $1,080 better, though). Hurray!!! It should be a lot more except for that one afternoon of $25 bomb pots and a bad PLO night in January where I lost $1,000. Time to buckle down.

Haven't seen our friend lately. She should be there Monday. A new business is keeping her busy during the evenings -- not what you think 😉

Won $300 Monday night playing 1/2 NLHE, so feeling pretty good about poker. Unfortunately, not feeling very well today (101-degree fever), so obviously not playing in my Wednesday night game. Still have PLO Friday night if I'm better.

Someone recommended we go to a show at the Sphere. The only thing playing when we'd want to go is The Sphere Experience with Darren Aronofsky's Postcard From Earth. It might be pretty cool, but I don't think I want to spend the time or money. Plus, my husband still has problems from Covid years ago and doesn't do well with looking up or flashing lights, so would not be good for him! We stick to a few good meals, wine, and poker. I hope we also take a few runs, even if it is around the strip. Really need to start getting back into shape.

Some of my neighbors were out there a month or so ago. They went to what sounded like a tour of the Sphere, said it was pretty incredible to experience. Might look into that.

The sphere show is visually stunning and there are other things to do before the show. Not sure flashing lights are a problem and neither is looking up.

Paying however much to feel bad about yourself... I wasn't a fan.

Thanks, Randall. Yes, I searched that thread. I think we'd actually enjoy the show, but I'd rather see a Cirque or similar for the money (although Cirque might be a bit more). I was also worried about the rollercoaster experience for my husband.

I guess we really aren't show people -- especially in Vegas and especially me. I do love Absinthe and similar, though. My poor husband loves musicals when we are in NYC, but I'm not as much of a fan. One thing we can agree on is live acoustic music that's not too loud and comedy clubs. It's really difficult to get us away from the poker tables in Vegas!

I really like Mystère and Ka and I hear O is even better, so one of those 3 would probably be enjoyable

If your husband gets vertigo sometimes, you want to do everything you can to avoid triggering it. Once triggered, you don't know how long it might be before it goes away. I know of a guy that had it and it never went away.

Interesting flop call there with, as you admit, very few useful turn cards.

Enjoying this so far and looking forward to more.

Those two short-stackers could -- and did -- have almost anything. LOL. Never folding AA to those guys when they are that short, especially V2 who will play any four cards for any draw.

I hope the trip report turns out to be a good one. I know there will be lots of poker. Not playing PLO tonight because my fever broke this morning, but I'll get back to playing soon.

Finally got out of the house and played poker last night. Haven't played since Monday, March 11. I just couldn't kick this illness. Probably Covid, but I haven't had a fever since Friday and I'm feeling much better. Still a little tired and slightly sore throat, but that might be from breathing at night.

Bought in for $300, lost it (lost the last $150 on a terrible play -- too embarrassing to write up), but I rallied back and turned my second buy-in into a $25 loss for the night, so not terrible. Should never have lost the first $300, though :(

Playing PLO tonight, so I hope I have a few good hands/stories. Everyone will be depressed because our team lost in basketball, though. I still have N.C. State (one of my degrees) and Kansas (parents' school) to root for, not that I'm actually a basketball fan.

Less than a week away!!

How excited are you??

Definitely something like that! I don't know how I'm going to get through the next two days of work.

PLO 1/2 w/ 5 bring in did not go as expected, but what an amazing game. Get a few limps, someone min-raises to 10 and then I'd pop it to 80 or so and the entire table would call. They were playing any four cards. Unfortunately, that made for a lot of bingo. I ended up down about $400, but my husband was up so that was good. Considering I was in for $3,200 it's definitely a win. My last buy-in was $1,000. That's how big of a game it was. Was the exception of one other player, they are the worst PLO players I have ever seen.

Here is an example. Straddle on. I raise pre with JdJhKsAd. Basically the whole table calls. Flop J8K with two spades. I pot it for like $100, another guy pots for $400, I shove for $100 on top, he calls. Ace of spades on the turn and he flips over 239K with 2s9s. Not much else I can do.

I don't remember it running quite like that in Vegas, but I'm prepared!
