701 Adventures to the 702: TR 5/26 - 6/1
This is my 10th trip to Vegas since 2018, and first since this trip earlier this year. This will be back to more typical

while everyone is complaining about the intense heat, at 1pm in Bismarck it is 58 degrees. I love it. already gone for a run and worked in the garden.
due to some strange and favorable circumstances I am coming back to Vegas for the second time this summer and third time this year.
my wife and I were making family vacation plans and had agreed to take a road trip to Minneapolis. but then my sister in Vegas tells us one day "guess what, we're getting a cabana at Red Rock for the 4th of July, wanna come?" you may remember (probably not) that I went out for 4oJ22 and it my best summer holiday ever, so obviously I was all for it. somehow my wife was convinced but only if we all went together. furthermore, she showed me she has like a million credit card reward points that covers airfare for all of us and still leaves another half million points. free airfare for the family sounds good to me.
this will be a stark contrast to my trip from 5 weeks ago in some significant ways. first and obvious: not solo, going with Mrs. Langdon and three kids. second: Mrs. Langdon says "no gambling, this is family time." I don't think she really believes or expects that, but sure honey. third: I am bringing my computer and will work Wednesday afternoon, Friday morning and Monday morning. if I'm going to work and have the ability to work remotely, might as well be from Vegas.
I am in charge of planning the itinerary. at this point I have nearly every hour for five days lined up for all five of us. the goal is for everyone to have fun and be happy without killing our family's budget. not easy: the kids don't like Las Vegas and my wife is the only person I know cheaper than me. I am including this trip into my TR because while I have no interest in a tournament, I think I have managed to schedule poker cash game sessions Wednesday night, Thursday afternoon, Thursday night, Saturday night, and maybe even Sunday night. there may also be some Pai Gow and possibly some blackjack. as long as I don't pull a Clark Griswold it should work out and keep everyone happy, even the wife.
will point out here that I have been to Vegas with them two times: a couple years ago with the kids I played one cash game and went +$700. and in February with the wife, I played one tourney and chopped at the Wynn for +$6400. so she's no fool, and neither am I.
ultimately, it will be five days with lots of pool time, lots of shows, lots of eating out, lots of time with relatives, lots of driving, and some relaxing. and hopefully some profitable poker for me.
we are doing 2 nights at Park MGM and 2 nights at Luxor, sandwiching Friday night at Summerlin Best Western. as everyone knows Friday night is expensive, and after making sure Mrs Langdon doesn't mind moving around (she doesn't), she happily booked a night with points so it is virtually free. Thursday, Friday and Sunday my kids will stay at their cousins' house so I won't have to share a bed with a stinky 13 year old every night.
I am piggybacking off the recent TR due to proximity, and because I'm not sure how much reporting I will do. but it is fun for me to document and I hope it will be interesting for you, despite lacking any WSOP inclusion.
Enjoy the main course of family time with a side dish of poker.
GL and, most importantly, have fun.
I made mention that my sister got us creating this vacation. that presents a little anecdote...
so she mentioned her in-laws got a cabana at Red Rock for the holiday, like they do each year. I'm almost certain she said the words "you should come," or something similar. pretty soon thereafter, my wife and I agreed to go, got the flight tickets booked, making arrangements, and then I came back to my sister, "okay, we are coming!"
then she said "oh, let me talk to dad."
suddenly I am flush with embarrassment. she's obviously not the one paying for a cabana for the holiday, her father in law is. he's got actual family coming, like all his kids and their families. what am I, daughter-in-law's brother's family of five? sure it was not a problem a couple years ago when it was just me. there is not limitless space, and while they are financially secure, us going necessitates buying a second cabana which is very expensive for a holiday. did I just invite myself to have him buy a cabana for my family?
we cancel the flight, I text him that we were acting out of turn, to not worry about us and we will go to Minneapolis as originally planned. but he responds, hold on, they are working on it.
a couple days later he announces they got a second cabana, which will be for his son's (BiL) and my family, we will get wristbands for the fireworks show, but we will be responsible for our own food. so we are in. relief. Mrs Langdon is mad and super embarrassed, but they have already paid for us and this is officially an invitation to our family. so no pulling out now.
I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to take my family for a special and memorable holiday vacation. honestly it is not something we could afford on our own. I am not privy to details, but BiL's mom is a former Stations exec so perhaps and hopefully they got a good deal on it anyway. I was under the impression that food is included in the price with the reservation but I am relieved that at least we can be responsible for our own dining and he is not.
for my own pride's sake I ask BiL: "did you guys invite us or did I invite ourselves?" and while the details are unclear, it seems like the consensus is the former. dad has repeated that he is happy and excited for us to come. so while uncomfortable, I don't think we have completely broached etiquette.
so no sense neglecting a good gift. let's go have some fun and make it the best (and hottest) Fourth of July ever!
Wow you’re back and with the family in tow. Have fun, curious did you plan this out on a complicated spreadsheet or something?
Whew! Close one!
Pinball Hall of Fame, since you're going to be on that end of the strip. Bet the kids would dig that.
Or maybe not, IDK. They probably have no idea what those machines are for.
Aquarium @ Mandalay Bay another good family site.
I hope you all have fun. I know it's not close, but Cromwell had $15 pai gow yesterday. Probably the lowest I've seen at the middle of the strip aside from maybe the LINQ (which I didn't visit this trip).
Leg 2 Preview, Part 3
my recent solo trip really prepared for this family trip and it looks like my run-bad is now hitting the good end of variance.
I followed the YouTuber's advice for tier matching and converted my MGM Pearl to Gold almost literally for nothing other than visiting a few loyalty desks. this gets us resorts fees waived for four nights. literally saves us $200. also saved me like $250 last time.
I am not someone who has the dumb myvegas games constantly running on all my devices. but I have been able to build up enough points to get a free room nearly every trip. and with my wife's account that is hopefully two nights together. this time, falling on a popular holiday weekend, it was looking unlikely that we would find availability, especially as the comp calendar for July was not published at all in June. however just a couple weeks ago, after refreshing and checking everyday, I was able to find the right people and took a chance and found that Park MGM had comp nights available for Wednesday and Thursday. strangely, it was the only MGM property that offered a myvegas comp on Thursday, and since it is a non-smoking and my wife hates even a little smoke we jumped on the offer.
then a weird thing: after booking the free night at both places (using the link from the myvegas email), I noticed that her room reward was still in waiting/pending status. got a message that the reward expired in a couple days. (more on that in a little bit)
I got an email from Park MGM Concierge welcoming me and offering to help with any reservations or assistance I needed. hmm. well. just to make sure I sent them both confirmation numbers and requested that they be linked for the two nights. they replied that they took care of it and we are in the same room for both nights. with that resolved, I was able to confidently "cancel" the pending reward for a myvegas points refund. I had already booked the room for July 4th for free and it literally cost me nothing. and now she still has enough points for a comp room for a future trip.
during my planning a few days ago I saw we had tickets to a show for Wednesday night at 7 at Horseshoe, and I was trying to figure out how and where to feed my family beforehand. schedule-wise, seemed to make the most sense to eat at Park MGM and I found a restaurant that looked appetizing and somewhat affordable. went to make an online reservation for 5pm and got the message that nothing was available before 7:30. well shoot, it's a holiday weekend, of course they are busy. but then remembering the email, I shot a message to Park MGM Concierge: "hey, can you help me get a reservation at 5pm for 5 people at Restaurant X. sincerely, gold card member me." a few hours later I got an email back confirming my reservation exactly as I had requested. bink!
and in process of becoming MGM Gold, I qualified for Fontainebleu whatever, earning $100 dining credit, and now a dinner reservation for my wife and I at a nice restaurant on Sunday night.
and we used her Chase points to book a (free) room for Friday night on the West side of town (where we will be anyway), and that place offers a highly-rated free breakfast.
and then feeling what the heck let's check and see what's available: we found a rental car available for $120 cheaper than our existing reservation and made the switch.
got a email coupon for $50 off show tickets from Viator, found one that looks interesting already on discount that my kids and us would enjoy, and bought 5 tickets for $110 total ($27 each). can't beat that.
I'm on a sun-run already and haven't even landed yet. let's make sure we don't miss the flight this time.
Your dedication to finding value is admirable!
Looks like you’re saving a lot of money with status matching, points, and everything else.
So you think everyone is sick in LV and have no problem bringing your family there?

haha well they aren't going to be packed into a WSOP room l petri dish for 3 days.
I don't think we will be in too many super crowded spaces, or at least that's the hope. or I'll just pretend it's fine. you come to Vegas to gamble

I didn't think it was bad and am not judging, but for someone who does I found it a bit odd.
I still stand by my statement about the cheap pai gow as long as you don't mind playing at a Caesars property and walking a bit.

I said people often get sick. I got super sick a couple years ago. I didn't judge like "don't come to Vegas, it's terrible!"
the fam is going to a show at Horseshoe Wednesday night, I'll probably play some pai gow around there in the meantime. I can probably handle $25 a hand. if Bellagio has it I'll do that, otherwise, probably Paris or Horseshoe
Leg 2 final preview
we are now T minus a few hours from takeoff. we are checked into our flight so there shouldn't be any shenanigans this time. flight departs at 5:00am sharp. I don't think I've ever had such an early flight before. howeva, we are arriving in Vegas still in the a.m. so that's like a whole extra day.
I got some cash from the bank which did not go unnoticed by Mrs Langdon.
I managed to work about 23 hours already this week. 16 more for holiday and "encouraged PTO" and I am basically already at FT. maybe I'll get to do some fun things Friday. currently that day is still pretty open.
one of us is taking the kids to a show Wednesday night. I'm hoping to convince my wife to go to allow a little degen time, and then some poker after dark as long as I can stay awake.
guess I should start packing.
Day 1
couple years ago when flying I found that Bismarck airport parking was ridiculously cheap, like $1/day. that must have been a covid thing because I discovered last night it is back to $10/day. that's a bummer. some friends offered to drive us but with 5 people, going at 3:30am and returning around 1am, time to suck it up and be personally responsible.
long layover in MSP makes me miss Allegiant. is nice to have in flight movies tho. I watched Usual Suspects, one of my favorites, until my kiddo had his eyes glued on it and my conscience convinced me to not be a terrible parent and turned it off as it was getting to the violent climax. flight was fine until when we touched down a little rough, my oldest boy with a weak stomach got sick. no bags in sight, I ripped the cap off his head and turned it over just in time to catch every drop.
picture uploading doesn't seem to be working, I'll have to add a photo dump later
we got an upgrade on our rental car to a Santa Fe which is super nice and very comfortable. the gear shifter is very awkward though, it will take some getting used to.
I've got a tradition going that I perpetuated which is Jack in the Box for the first meal. I love it, the kids loved it. made a quick stop at Target before checking into Park MGM.
Pretty nice room. we are sneaking five people in here so glad there's a little couch that someone can use if needed.
I don't know if it was the work server/VPN or the Park MGM WiFi (likely) but my computer was terrrrribly slow. it was almost completely nonfunctional. I tried for 2 hours before laying down for a few minutes while the fam visited the pool.
as I mentioned in my preview I tried to get a reservation on my own for La La Noodle and there was none available. I talked to the Park MGM concierge and they got me a table for five at five. it is not the pinnacle of fine dining but I was incredibly impressed with La La Noodle. our server was awesome. really the entire staff was exceptional. our food was on the table at 5:15. our water glasses were refilled almost constantly. and the price was reasonable, total bill $100 pre-tip. I put up a more complete review in the Casual Dining thread.
after dinner we wandered by the Lady Gaga museum and wandered in. I'm not a Gaga fan or a fashionista, but it was interesting and entertaining and worth checking out.
took the tram to Bellagio, went through the Conservatory and took some obligatory family photos, then on our way to Horseshoe we found ourselves in front of the fountains just in time for their Hoedown show. it was awesome! probably their best show.
had 4 tickets for Potted Potter, my kids love Harry Potter and I was too cheap to buy tix for both us parents so I made her go and I wandered around the casino a bit, looking for some degen games. Horseshoe has terrible offerings, $50 min Pai Gow, nosebleeds blackjack. if I'm going to play I would rather patron MGM. wandered back to Bellagio where they seemed to have the same offerings. (Later on, I saw some $50 min 3:2 tables, several $15 min 6:5 tables, and yet I saw people playing at $100 min 6:5. doesn't make sense.)
decided wth and got my name on the 1/3 list and after a half hour wait I was seated in a game at the back corner of the sports book room. I'll give that rundown below.
a bit later, met up with family in the fancy shopping alley and they were parched and happy to see my full bottle of Fiji Water. it was 8:30 and the fountain show was starting so we hustled out and caught it from corner outside the door. mosied back through Bellagio to tram back to Park.
as everyone was settling into bed I told my wife I was going to walk around a bit. she kinda laughed because she knew what that meant. I went down to the casino and I didn't play but I did watch stand by a couple tables and watch a Pair Gow and Ultimate Holdem tables for an hour. one of the players even ordered me a drink.
pretty exhausted, I managed to sleep well for the first time in weeks. it was an excellent first day in Vegas.
Bellagio 1/3 session, a recap
- I open AdTs $10, get raised to $25, several callers, I call to complete the action.
flop AK7sss. bet $55, I call, raise to $300 and an all-in call for near that much. I have a pretty good hand but I know I'm beat. I fold. another spade hits the turn, but the all-in player had QJss for the nuts (I blocked his royal flush). the raiser mucked with AK. did I do anything wrong there? I don't think so, but I'm down quite a bit already.
- open to $20, in BB wirh K3hh I'm the only caller.
I check in the dark to the raiser, flop Qh7h8c. he bets $25 I call.
turn As. I lead for $35, he thinks then calls.
river is the T to complete my flush. I bet $105 but that was too much and he folds and I win my first pot of the trip.
- BB straddle, I do a raise with Q9o and only straddle calls.
K85 high flop, I c-bet $16, he calls.
flop is a Q, second diamond. checks.
river is a 5d. he leads for $45. I make the hero call and see the bad news KQss.
- UTG I open with red kings, several calls.
no ace on board. 5J78T runout
I c-bet $25, guy next to me raises $50
check turn, he bets $100 I shove for a little more, he calls and I win a nice pot.
- With 4-4 I rivered the straight, although I chop vs Q4. still +$100 on the hand. over $550 and I'm about ready to rack up.
but I'm on the button and see KQ. I'm not going anywhere, especially on K high board. but alas, I pay off a big bet on a K5xx5 runout losing to AK.
next hand, ready to go, but with TT, how can I? didn't win that one either.
since the show was over and my family was walking over I did rack up. it was a very splashy table. I didn't witness any bluffs. I played just 45 minutes and booked a modest $60 profit. down from my high but I'm happy that even playing looser than I should I still left a winner.
I got close to 9 hours of sleep which was wonderful.
Day 2
perpetuated another tradition by stopping at Blueberry Hill, for a red, white and blue holiday breakfast of pancakes, waffles and French toast. portions ridiculously big. should have only gotten 3 plates but second son demanded blueberry and first son didn't want blueberry.

we head to Red Rock resort and to the pool where our cabana is ready for us. said hi to sister and her in-laws. the complex is so pretty. the water very nice. they even do good music. played with the kids in the water which was a little bit of heaven. got some chicken strips and a dole whip.

after a time I excused myself to go play blackjack with the hotties by the pool. found Lauren dealing a $10 min table so bought in and sat down. fun times, but dropped to the bottom of my stack. dealer change to an even bigger hottie, and my stack grew all the way back to a $20 profit and I checked out.
after some more pool time and mingling I headed inside to the Red Rock poker room for a 2-hour session. They have high hand promos every half hour (AAATT+, $300). for 1/3 the max is now $500. no chops allowed, no button straddles allowed. I've never seen a more regulated room. recap below, and it was a good time. at one point I called the wife to see if we had gotten our special fruit platter yet. she said not yet. so I played a bit longer. racked up and left half an hour and the fruit platter was finished. thought they would give a holler "hey it's here." recap later.
when they kicked us out of the water we went inside and got some ice cream at Nathan's Frozen Custard, and that made everyone happier. didn't realize that to get back out there was a long line and the doors didn't open for half hour. I said I was going to "walk around" a bit and found a $25 Pai Gow table, woohoo! pretty dumb game but I love it. won three hands before I lost one. after about an hour the fam called me back in and I left up $50.
back at the pool area for the pregame party, ate some snacks and relaxed with family and relatives until the fireworks. the display was awesome. best fireworks show ever. everyone loved it. even the emotionless firstborn. the wife's excitement/enthusiasm was a bit contained though as she was still a little embarrassed about crashing our not-quite-relatives family party, but she admitted that it was great.

kids went with sister. wife and I drove back to Park MGM, admiring the plentiful fireworks that lit the sky around 215 and throughout the valley.
when we got back the room I asked if she wanted to do something. she wanted to take a shower, and asked if I was going to "go walk around." she says if I win and come back at midnight we can do something. I think this is the first time I've felt she recognizes and appreciates that I'm not a bad player or gambler. wouldn't say she supports it but she doesn't seem to mind anymore.
I wanted to play at Mandalay Bay and also pick up my food comps there to use tomorrow. I looked at Bravo and it said 4 tables, 1 waiting. I walked through NYNY and took the tram that goes right to the room but when I showed up the wait list had 20+ names, and my heart sunk a little. appears the app was not accurate. if I had known that I would have called ahead. in the meantime I received my food comps voucher to use Friday. there were several seats open though and people leaving pretty consistently and it seems like most of the people on the list weren't around so it only took about 20 minutes to go through 20 names and I got a seat. recap to follow.
one note, the floor man said that tonight they are staying open for the first time so Mandalay Bay poker room appears to be operating 24 hours now (didn't check if they still close Tuesdays).
following that brief 45-60 minute session caught the last tram of the night. I hate Excalibur, the casino smells so bad. NYNY was jam packed and I don't really like that smell either. Park MGM has a nice smell.
I decided on walking to MB instead of driving. it took 22 minutes from getting on the tram to getting inside my hotel room. I figured walking to the garage, exiting, driving to the next garage which is kinda far from the poker room would take longer, and I think that was accurate. also felt good to get some brisk walking.
it was an amazing day, best 4th of July ever for our family. and it was great to spend it with them.
Red Rock 1/3 afternoon recap
- I open with AJo, get raised to $35 and I am only caller.
I check dark J74. he bets $40
turn 8.
river A, no flush or straight. I bet $45 he calls with QQ.
I win two more in a row, A7 with a 7 on board, then with AT vs A9 with both T and 9 showing.
in 15 minutes I'm up +$275
- I open KQo, raise to $35, a couple calls.
I check dark, flop AAK. checks around.
turn whatever, I bet like $50, he calls.
river checks and he doesn't have an ace.
- very aggro player opens to $22. in BB I see AK, raise to $60.
queen high flop, I bet $40 and he folds.
- same aggro player opens, several calls and me on button with A5.
flop is 955. that's good. he c-bets and I smooth call with another guy.
turn is 7, checks to me and I bet, they call.
river is whatever. SB bets like $50. aggro folds, I raise like $200 to put him all in and he folds so I scoop a real nice pot.
- aggro guy opened. I'm tired of the stress of big pots but I call with 98.
flop comes something like A64. I called some c-bet without a good reason.
turn T. checks and I'm like let's see a 7.
river is the 7! I bet like $60 and he calls. I've now got tall stacks.
Lost a big pot with QT on JJT flop.
won a big hand with AhQd on Qhhhh board (he folded river with 87hh)
saw some pretty terrible play. on a JTTr flop, with like $50 in the pot, an old guy shoved for like $120. why on earth would you do that.
he had QQ. got called by a T (who filled up with 9s).
it was a pretty action-packed session where I got and/or made a lot of hands. cashed out for nearly +$400.
Mandalay Bay 1/2, late night
- opened 98o UTG
flop came 762, which was a good spot to c-bet.
checked the turn, and the river came the T giving me the nut straight, but also the third spade. I checked, she bet $55, I called and she did not have two spades so my rungood continues.
- straddle, I raise in BB with AcQs and get one call
flop 763ccc. I bet he calls.
turn is 5s. I check and he bets $50. I have the nut flush draw but there is only about 40 in the pot. don't think it's worth the risk. I fold.
- I raise AQ, a few calls.
flop Q97. I c-bet $15, old man iced black coffee check raises to $60. my spidey senses are tingling a set. I don't think I can give up yet so I toss in the two greens.
turn is a jack and he goes all in and I snap fold top-top.
unfortunately that took out most of my winnings and it was getting close to midnight. I'm no dummy. cashed out for my "win" of $8 and caught the last tram of the night.
I have yet to have a losing session in any gaming.
poker: +$460
pit games: +$70
don't know if I will play anything Friday.
nobody commenting, anybody even reading? should have just created a new/unique thread.
Day 3
another great night sleep for both of us, without kids this time.
I logged into work but the Internet was so bad I only made it like half hour. later on, Mrs Langdon stepped into the Park conference center/business center area which was quiet, had tables and she said the Internet was great. so must just be bad in the hotel rooms. lesson learned.
we packed up and just kinda wandered for a while, going through Aria and Crystal Shoppes. came back to Park MGM where I saw the Pai Gow table was at $25 and somehow I convinced my wife to let me play. she walked away and tended to some client work calls. I won a few hands early which knocked out any anxiety. after that it's just making sure I can push. played like 45 minutes and won $75.
on a previous trip we ate at the Seabreeze Cafe. as we left, Mrs Langdon noticed Noodle House right next door and remarked that she would rather have eaten there. I'm no dummy, so I planned to use my MB poker comps to eat there this time. finally at 11am it opened and we got a table. she got phó and I got drunken noodles. good experience.

there seems to be a national volleyball tournament going on because Mandalay Bay was full of tall girls and teams and families wearing volleyball t-shirts.
drove out to Elkhorn Springs area to my sister's house, and I worked for a few more hours before crashing for a nap. kiddos and cousin went to a movie at nearby Santa Fe station. no other plans today, just chill. it's too hot to go anywhere.
didn't realize Santa Fe Station had a poker room. if I come back to visit my sister again I'll have to check it out.
for dinner I wanted something a little lighter and fresher so we picked up some salad wraps froma salad wraps shop. it was huge and filled me up but the kids hated theirs. even though they customized them. dad fail.
after helping with the little kids we set off to our hotel, Best Western Summerlin. not a luxury place or a strip resort but it is a pretty nice and comfortable hotel. after checking into my room, I asked wife what her plan was, which was nothing. I said I was gonna go visit Red Rock casino, which seemed to surprise her. hey, I'm on vacation!
when I returned several hours later she was still awake watching a show on her phone and she continued even after I went to sleep.
Red Rock 1/3 evening recap
brand new table opened up right after I got there.
first hand, guy went all-in on a J345 turn and got called by 67. fireworks early.
second orbit, the guy who won earlier (yo-yo to my left) 5-bet jammed pre-flop with JJ vs KK.
- next orbit, I'm UTG with AA. I min-raise. yo-yo shoves all in. another guy calls all-in and it's the dream scenario, two people jam in front of me and I'm sitting on aces. I toss in some chips and show my rockets, and it's JJ vs KK vs AA for a nearly $1000 pot, and I am, quick math, 42:4 to win the biggest pot of my life
flop T85, looks good. turn 6.
Jack on the river. my heart screams in pain.
I'm rebuying 35 minutes in and the guy to my left has a million chips.
- T9cc, I open $15, he raises $30, I call.
flop 7c6c3x, think it checks.
turn 5, I bet, he shoves for like $50, I call with my combo draw, his turn to have aces and I do not hit my draw. this game is a disaster
sometimes it's not my night. after one hour I leave -$400 and try for better luck at Pai Gow.
didn't work, -$100. pretty quick too. I was in the wrong seat because my table mates were betting hundreds a hand and cashed out for a few thousand.
every dealer in Red Rock is a grumpy middle aged Asian woman.
this may be my last chance to casino this trip and I couldn't go back so soon, so I found a few more bills (smaller ones) in my wallet and thought I'd try a different table. found a $15 min which would give me a little more runway.
it was a lot of work and took me close to 2.5 hours, but I grinded and grinded. the last $15 bet took me about 8 tries, but when I won that hand at 1:30am I had dug myself all the way out to $180 for a $5 profit. and so I sit now at only 1 losing (poker) session for the trip.
Poker +$68
Pit games +$150
I get coolered one time aces v kings v jacks and I feel like a total loser.
I think pretty good stuff. I think the issue with responses was the lag from the post of you getting ready to travel until an update might of slowed the responses down. As you know I don’t tend to post trip reports here anymore. I also don’t have nearly as much poker content.
