A rare Slim music take I am in alignment with. Although I have this album behind What’s the Story and Different Class in the 90s Britpop rankings
I once sang Lucky Man in front of an audience with my buddy playing guitar
Fortunately before camera phones were a thing

Have I gone full normie?? Altho this bloke has f-ing Oasis ahead so disqualified on principle
ozzies are weird in music
i knew a bunch in china who lost their collectives marbles when they discovered "rivers of babylon" was available on the karaoke machine and they all went nuts on it, calling it an australian classic
decades later i learn it wasn't the soft folk song the way they sung it, nor even australian
Always assumed it was Jimmy Cliff's song. From the Harder They Come (not pr0n) soundtrack.

I was a Brit at the time and still am musically, given I’m basically house music til I die, ably supported by the big Brit mega artists of the 60s and 70s

Filipinos lose their **** at the most generic American love songs ever written. There’s a story of a film director who camped out at a hotel to (successfully!) beg the lead singer of Snow Patrol to let her use “Chasing Cars” in her film.

It’s caused me some soul searching too.
I’d never before considered Verve to be in the ‘sad alt music to contemplate suicide to’ that you espouse, so it’s been a bad day for both of us
I mean, with lyrics like...

I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
Where all the veins meet, yeah
...
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine,
Let it cleanse my mind,
I feel free now

it shows exactly why they're in Slims wheelhouse
Most under-rated one hit wonder? And go!
I don’t know if the target threaders demographic has aged out of liking hip hop, but may I present:
Broken YouTube Linki think i can guess which one you would choose
Spoiler
hard to say what qualifies as a one hit wonder as that's quite arbitrary - especially when looking at stuff i didn't actively live through as then i could confuse the one hit which remains popular today as their one hit
so going by wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_on...
the faux winner
Spoiler
obviously layla by derek and the dominos demands a top spot as that's an all time banger, but that band was around so briefly and all the key componetns had dozens of massive hits in other projects so i don't think that one counts - only on the list on a technicality
controversy of the list
Spoiler
arlo guthrie and city of new orleans is part of the list, which feels insane to me as he had numerous hits and even an entire film developed out of another song (which isn't city of new orleans)
it also lists lou reed's perfect day and walk on the wild side... wtf? very tempted to do some serious editing to this wiki
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/twoplustwo-actually-definitely-helping-stud/userimages/yHd8O2x.png)
likewise also has dr john, a guy with lots of popular songs, even though one is more popular than the others - we all know a handful of dr john songs
wtf it has werewolves of london from warren zevon, are you ****ing kidding me, warren is a saint and no one hit wonder
now it has soft cell, another with multiple legit hits
wtf now crash test dummies and lisa loeb, this list is bs
omfg now there's oasis.... jfc
the contenders
Spoiler
smooth and relaxing, just hard to listen to this and let that musical heroin take hold
Spoiler
solid entry, it's the cheap romance paperback next to the snickers at the checkout isle, but it's there because that's what you want, no it's what you need
Spoiler
this is obviously the best one, but it's sadly quite highly rated already so it can't win, afterall it's big time, used in burger king commercials
Spoiler
fun but not a daily driver, if you heard it too regularly you'll hate it
Spoiler
just fun and get up and get moving pop rock, wrote out these lyrics in hopes to coax very josie back to the forums, it didn't work and some found it disrespectful :(
Spoiler
while not bk commercial famous, this song still way too popular today to count as underrated
Spoiler
still too big now to win
Spoiler
very uplifting banger, it's dumb, but so are all of us, a guilty pleasure we would try to pretend we never liked
Spoiler
great song but kind of cheap addition since dude died hence the short career
Spoiler
tempted to make this the champ, but the music is too flat
f it, i'm putting it together with this one because they are both much musically flat yet still catchy and haunting 90s meloncholy
Spoiler
just a beautiful wall of sound
Spoiler
really interesting behind the scenes doc on youtube about this song, how they knew they had a hit right away but were broke perfectionists so they spent months living with his parents and converting the dining room into a recording studio to get the song perfectly and cheaper than bringing it to a professional studio and then the song launched them into mega success and then never again hit that high
Spoiler
gman will appreciate this one, they got their name from all being former airforce, this was a staple of high school for me
never understood why they never had anything beyond this but apparently the front man was primarily a song writer and producer and this was more of a side project for him, same reason why we never heard from this guy again either
Spoiler
Spoiler
this whole album is solid but this was all that got any play
ska, punk, skunk, idk what to call these recent songs but whatever it is, it kicks
Spoiler
her and michelle branch briefly captured my heart, but michelle escapes the list as a two hit wonder
Spoiler
if you don't like this song there's something wrong with you
Spoiler
entire album was solid but this was by far their best song and only one to get airtime
Spoiler
album was decent but this 100% is the song that took over
Spoiler
this song so powerful that all it took to explode was to be played in the background of an episode of girls, that's right, some fat whiny bish named hannah dancing topless with this in the background was all it took, the song is that good
Spoiler
amazing video, i love it, also super into that girl, bone structure so sharp i could use her face to shave
Spoiler
as cheesy as it is, it's genuinely a banger at heart
notable omissions from the wiki
Spoiler
imo
Spoiler
i love this song, really disappointed they couldn't manage to string together much else
Spoiler
how can you not get into this - sadly they never repeated this magic
Spoiler
hearing this i thought i discovered a real gem, but nothing else they have is remotely as good
Spoiler
idk if this one should count or not, was PIL enough of a separation from the sex pistols?
Spoiler
legit don't know if this counts, don't know if his other songs were well played or time as a beach boy counts, but this is a banger, would be the champ if i were even sure it was even a hit at one point
weird dude, very violent drunk, befriended charles manson (like all cult leaders he was also an aspiring musician) and then when they had a falling out supposedly beat up manson, later through his possessions on his boat into the water and then drowned after he attempted to retrieve them from the depths
Spoiler
love this song
Spoiler
the irony of this is the song is about being a big deal with a hit song, but that was in his niche house music category, this one is mainstream
Spoiler
their dance moves were either inspired by or the inspiration for the champ
Spoiler
was shocked to finally learn this was a dude singing
Spoiler
maybe they had other hits, idk, i hope so, shocked to learn singer is white
Spoiler
never was a massive hit, but they played the late shows and were in wayne's world 2 soundtrack
Spoiler
entire album had that je ne se quois that satisfied teen angst but as far i know this was their only song to get any real airplay
unsure if this qualifies because i know a later one did get some teen soundtrack play
Spoiler
but their best songs were never hits
Spoiler
Spoiler
they had some minor hits but this was by far their biggest one
in fact, i may have to retract this one because their other song has quite few more views
Spoiler
used to love this but it's losing its touch over time
Spoiler
meh
Spoiler
great song that is also losing its edge over time (but like from top 10 to top 100
Spoiler
goat
Spoiler
great song, possibly have more, idk, i don't want to ruin the perfection that is this with a lesser second helping
Spoiler
from the looks of it, this song was probably never a hit
it should have been a hit at one point in order to qualify, hence why i didn't include a song from okervill river
was going to put dog days are over but apparently florence and the machine has several songs with big listen tallies on youtube, who knew?
Spoiler
massively disapointed the rest of their stuff nowhere near as good as this
Spoiler
looks like he had other genre hits, but this is the only one to get played at bars and hipster coffee shops
Spoiler
this duo was apparently the product of a guy who groomed and controlled a teenage girl, good song though
Spoiler
i think calling this a hit is stretching it
Spoiler
If you don't know this song, crawl out from under your rock you've been hiding under
great song on its own merit
Spoiler
this song makes me incredibly sad and filled with regret at all the mistakes i made and opportunities squandered, not that i did anything bad, just didn't do enough, not enough roads taken - this was an insanely popular song during those party days when instead of building something i just skated upon an empty shell
Spoiler
great song performed by a group that is arguably a cult in real life
Spoiler
this is kind of pushing it because they do have another song with decent view count on youtube
Spoiler
and with a single thumbnail, they captured the hearts of a million hipsters
absolutely beautiful song though, pretty depressing nothing else they did ever approached this
Spoiler
based on viewcount, unsure if this was ever a hit, feels like it was though and youtube isn't the greatest litmus test for that since it's mostly kiddos and anything that was big pre-youtube is artificially low
Spoiler
including this on a technicality in that their "big hit" was a cover of blue monday and this was an "edgy" staple of mine in high school
Spoiler
not even a hit, but a good one off song, not even featuring in guardians in the galaxy could propel this band into stardom
Spoiler
this is def cheating, they apparently have another popular song on youtube
Spoiler
the mileage this guy got out of this one song is incredible
the champ
Spoiler
few, if any remember this band, and if they do, they hadn't thought about them in a while
also how i imagine feels rocks out with that violent head thrashing
forgot a few - will probably have more later
Spoiler
had not yet discovered tool, so thought this was as hard as it got
Spoiler
can't believe i forgot this one, have listened to it countless times
also meant to include this one as potential evidence that stroke 9 had a secondary hit as kevin smith liked the band and make this a prominent song in jay and silent bob strike back
Spoiler
got another submission i forgot
Spoiler
(which is a pretty good sign of being underrated imo)
and a co-champion because it's that good of a pop song and that easily overlooked to be forgotten
another contender
Spoiler
opens up the film cruel intentions with a wallop and the band never found a home beyond that soundtrack inclusion, was also shocked to learn in recent years that it's a dude singing
our co champ, or champ 1b if you will
Spoiler
and the correct url for the last one which didn't load
Spoiler
can't believe i forgot this one, have listened to it countless times
Rick
in peacetime conditions, you would have a good shot to win ‘longest average post length’ on tpt but even by your standards, that is a velly long post
I love how in the 90s there were two alt-rock one-hit wonders with "Verve" in their name.
(I'm a "Freshmen by the Verve Pipe" guy, that song is a miracle.)
That Jesus Jones album slaps tho

Sad Dad Rock 4eva
Yeah, I meant more "what one hit wonder most deserved to have more hits, or at least not to be remembered as a one hit wonder."
I think Midnight Oil is a solid contender for that title. Their discography is massive, and they had a ton of great songs. I thought Blue Sky Mine was a hit too, though. I sure heard it a ton back in the day.
Kate Bush also a strong contender, if people really think of her as a OHW. I sure don't, though. I'll go with Concrete Blonde. The entire album Bloodletting is just amazing, and Free is full of great songs as well. But they were still definitely a OHW, remembered only for Joey by most.
Yeah, that list is some bull****. Siouxsie and the Banshees is by no means a OHW, even if they technically only had one Billboard hit in the US.
Interestingly, Tom Cochrane is on there twice. He was the frontman/songwriter for Red Ryder. Another double OHW is Everlast, who was also fronted House of Pain.
holy spoilers batman.
Rick, do you get paid by the spoiler?
jfc garick, you're going to make me make another list? 😀
oh i love red ryder, used to have lunatic fringe as my ringtone after I saw heavy metal - which is an amazing coincidence because although it was not in that film, it would have been the perfect song to include and thus mandela effect always plays that song in the background to any mental images of heavy metal
as far as i'm concerned - lunatic fringe is heavy metal
who doesn't like

but seriously that many unspoiled videos would have broken the antiquated archetecture of this site which preloads and buffers everything, spoilers somewhat mitigate that by giving the browser priorities of unspoiled ones first iirc
