[LOW] $2/$5 Bomb Pot
So playing at a new spot while traveling. Table has been doing bomb pots for pretty much any reason though for some reason just single board NLHE instead of double board PLO.
I'm relatively new to the table so no definitive reads on villain. After this hand, I gathered he considers himself better than the table/quasi pro mentality but he pulled a few very questionable moves so could just be in his head.
$2/$5 NL 8 handed.
Hero in HJ has Ac 9c. Effective stack is $1,500.
Preflop: $25 bomb pot so $200 to the flop.
($200) Flop: 9h 8c 5h
Checks to V1 in LJ who bets $65. Hero calls. Everyone else folds.
($330) Turn: As
V1 bets $250. Hero calls.
($880) River: 7h
V1 jams for $1,160. Hero?
Given the bomb pot I didn't want to raise turn against an unknown hand and bloat the pot. He's clearly showing strength but this river should be better for me than him. I doubt he's worried about a better straight if he did have a hand like 67 and maybe he thinks I'd have raised nut flush draw/combo draw on the flop?
River is a snap fold, not close
I mightve raised flop, i definitely wouldve raised turn, but i think its a pretty easy fold on the river.
Worried about bloating a bomb pot on the turn after catching the best possible card HU IP?
That is the absolute worst river card and a clear fold
Snap fold. Probably play the rest the same.
All I can say is I thought bomb pots were for gambling. I snap shove on the turn, maybe on flop with that 40bb sweetner just lying there.
I’ll presume H folded and V turned over 65, or he called and V had Ah8h.
Assuming everyone playing BP terrible and betting out a bunch from EP, then I don't mind calling flop with only a couple of people behind and we can just fold if someone else raises. Raising small to discourage overcalls is also fine.
Shoving turn, ainec. Flopped nuts or set, gg.
River everything gets there and would be a fold without some good reads that V is just blasting off a lot with T7/T8, or overvaluing A7/A8/98.
It's kind of difficult to have flush draws esp. NFD which is mostly what V is repping (or flopped nuts), but he should still be worried about what you can have on the river.
Raising flop seems insane. Turn is close, his sizing is kind of scary.
everyone raising turn seems pretty cavalier about putting in 300 BB with two pair and no nut blockers in a pot with 8 people dealt in. sorry but i would be very worried about the flopped nuts here. and by raising turn you are committing yourself.
and raising flop would be awful with the world behind too.
This is a NLHE bomb pot, not PLO, we can't just wait until we have the nut straight and flush redraws with 40bb in dead money out there ... TPTK is very often the best hand on the flop even 8 ways, would be raising small as kind of a semi-bluff to deny calls from like random QJ/QT/etc on the flop.
Top two is extremely strong on the turn, and IMO you'd want strong reads to be folding. I doubt calling is going to be better, unless V will keep firing on the river with a lot of missed draws and we call/fold correctly.
And to repeat ... if V's in the "blinds" and EP are range checking flop, the flop raise becomes a lot more problematic ... but most people don't.
Also given it's a bomb pot the A isn't as scary to V on the turn if he has like 98/85 or even TT/T9, and looks good if V has A7/A6/Ah*h. Also, due to the bomb pot V has all 9 combos. of 85 and 6 combos. each of of 98/95. Plus he's still allowed to be bluffing.
Just put some ranges into something, even if V only bluffs flush draws (not JT,T7,87,77, etc.) and doesn't bet any one pair hand that isn't Ah*h (including KK, K9, etc. which look v. strong) we are still like 65% vs. range (hh,A9,A8,99,98,95,88,85,76,55) and against someone who is more likely to be aggressive we can easily have 80%+ vs. range on turn.
So, are you raise/folding turn or raise/calling? If he calls our raise and shoves this river, are we folding?
Edit: Wait, you are shoving $1, 200 into $250 on the turn in a bomb pot w/ the serious non-nuts? OK. Have fun.
If we think we are ahead, why not flat turn and let him fire at the river (although now we know the river sucks)?
In a bomb pot, I actually might fold turn. There's zero chance this guy is taking this sizing without the nuts. The only reason to call is to hopefully boat up on the river. When that doesn't happen, the river is a trivial fold.
I've played more NLHE (single board) bomb pots than most (sane) people, but almost entirely in home games.
Maybe those games bet way more than in this game, but there's still a decent amount of math that you can't be _that_ scared of sets and flopped straights because it's not like a std. hand where people limp a bunch of stuff that hits this board hard.
Everyone has any2, and J6o doesn't always want to just x/f when it can see 200 in dead money out there.
Obviously if you've been doing them for almost any reason for hours and this guy hasn't been fighting for any before now, I'd only call flop ... but even then, our hand is very strong on the turn.

OK, if we give V a straight on the turn, why would he jam the river when the flush comes? Hoping that Th3h folds or that H has top two and thinks V is bluffing with 65 and calls?

Answer given to us by OP, in his OP:

What? That's exactly what it is, only worse -- and we have no reads. This guy is betting the flop and continuing on the A turn for 2/3 pot and you think he's betting less than A9? I mean, if he is, more power to him. Raising the turn is suicide -- he's folding worse (not sure what worse he has) and calling w/ a ton of hands that beat us or have tons of equity.
I'll save my stack for another pot.
What if anything is the difference between a $25 bomb pot and a 2-5 $200 splash pot?
I’ve also grown more & more suspicious of V’s jam. Add in the description of V attitude after this hand and the fact this thread exists, I’m now positive H folded and V turned over worse than A9.
