Top set facing 3x pot river donk shove on straight and flush board

1/3 NL. I raise UTG to 15 with QhQd, only BB defends. Flop is Qs9h8d, check, I bet 15, call. River is 5s for Qs9h8d5s, check, I bet 30, call. River is 6s for Qs9h8d5s6s. BB donk shoves for 3x pot. How wild an image would villain have to have to consider calling here?

I folded, but when I saw more how villain was playing, I think it was a call. It was very unlikely I had the low straight or backdoor flush.

I don't really like your line here -- I really think that this turn should be a big bet or check spot, and your hand wants to bet big.

One of the problems with folding here after betting flop and turn small is that your hand really doesn't look like the nuts, and villain is probably going to show up with a lot of trash that might want to bluff against a non-nut range. If you bet the turn (and maybe even the flop) bigger, it's harder for villain to show up with trash here and also a lot scarier for him to bluff.

Villain seemed hesitant calling the flop and I strongly blocked top pair, which is why I bet half pot on the turn.

I would have called a pot sized bet on the river. Once I saw how villain played and that he liked to push and bluffed multiway on a wet board, I would have called the push.

To answer the question directly - I'd have to think V was pretty wild to call off when there are three spades and a one-liner to a straight on board.

I think the pre-flop and flop actions are fine. I might size up on the turn that brings in a BDFD, but maybe not, since V might have been slow-playing a better hand (JT, and...just JT, I guess). The half-pot turn bet can't be too terrible. Maybe I'd want to go 2/3 pot, but maybe not, depending on the stack depth.

ETA - just read the rest of the thread. Even if V showed a propensity to bluff, I don't know that I'd want to call off a 3x pot river bet, the way this was played. I think the better adjustment would be to bet bigger on earlier streets, so that the SPR is lower getting to the river, giving his bluffs less fold equity, and making it harder for him to get to the river with a lot of weaker hands that want to bluff.

Gross runout. All the draws made their hand with 76, 77, 78, and suited spades getting there on the river in addition to JT. People bluff the river infrequently at low stakes. So unless I have positive confirmation that V can make big bluffs, I’m folding here.

I think you played it well. It’s tough to fold a set.
