1/2, deep: QQ facing UTG open + MP 3b

1/2, deep: QQ facing UTG open + MP 3b

1/2, 8-handed

• UTG ($600, kinda active) opens to $18 (his standard size I’ve seen so far)

• MP ($400, bad nit, half asleep most of the session) suddenly wakes up and 3-bets to $55

• Hero ($600, tight image) on the BTN looks down at Q Q

This one really threw me off. On the one hand, QQ is a monster, but given the villain:

• UTG opens fairly wide, but not crazy

• MP is a nit and hasn’t shown aggression all night — his sudden 3-bet vs UTG looks nutted

• If I 4-bet, I probably fold out JJ/maybe even AK and only get action from KK+

• If I fold, I’m potentially making a huge nit-fold with one of the top 3 hands in poker

• If I flat, I risk being sandwiched but I’m in position, and this nit won’t barrel off with AK anyway

So the options:

a) Flat the $55 and navigate postflop in position
b) 4-bet to $125 and fold to a jam
c) 4-bet to $125 and call a jam because AK is in range
d) Just fold preflop

What’s the best line here versus a bad nit who plays AK very straightforward and only barrels hard with overpairs?

How much data do you have on the nit? And why is he a "bad" nit? Is it just he plays straightforward?

Assuming your read is right, 4-betting seems like lighting money on fire, and btw no nit, by definition, ever 5 bet jams AK for 200bb, so option c is insane.

So the decision seems to be flat or fold. We don't have set mining odds, so some of our flatting has got to be based on winning it with QQ, but we do have position.

If you genuinely think JJ and AK might be in his range here, and you can navigate post flop well in position, I'm OK with flatting. If not fold (and tell no-one).

I flat and use position.

This is so close between calling and folding that I think the fact that UTG sometimes 4bets and we don’t get to always see the flop if we call is a deciding factor that pushes me to a fold.
