Pre flop in EP.

1/3 live 8 handed.

I am the effective with 300.

I am new to the game and this is my first orbit. I don't have a specific read on the UTG other than he is a MAWG. The players behind me look to be the usual suspects consisting of loose regs and some lags and maybe a TAG mixed in.

UTG raises to 15 and I am next. What would you do with these holdings? This seems to be the usual raise size in these games.

1) AhJh
2) TT
3) JJ
4) AQo

Does my decision change if I have 500?

What if the open was only to 10?

In most games, most situations, against most V's, I'm playing most of my range as raise or fold from any position that isn't the BTN or BB. So, I'd 3B with all of those hands, and probably fold all of them if we get 4B.

Being deeper or him raising smaller doesn't change much for me, at 1/3, as far as the next action goes. A 4B is still going to make me fold all those hands.

The only thing that might change based on stack depth or his raise size is my 3B sizing. If we're starting deeper, and / or he raised smaller, I might 3B larger.

It would suck to go 3X, have one or more people call behind, and then someone puts in a cold 4B squeeze, or he 4B's, and we have to think about whether or not the 4B could be light because of all the dead money in the pot. I'd rather make it 4X, to make it more likely the rest of the table folds and we get this HU and IP.

3B serves to reduce SPR so we can stack off faster. 2 street games or rivers that pot commit someone are almost always just coolers. The only hands in that category you listed are suited aces and pocket pairs as those will effectively make the nuts. Those hands can also call a 4B. AQo doesnt fit into any of these categories. It's a valuecatcher at best, so you should aim to just be calling preflop.

Most likely, I would legitimately 3bet, the first three hands and nudge bet to 30 with AQ. Trying to isolate or at least reduce the field.

Stack size or villain’s bet size really changes nothing pre-flop in my mind. Against most players, I’m folding all of these hands to a 4Bet, because it’s rarely a light bet in my room.

Obviously, there’s a few that get out of line that I might continue against. I used to think if I call with jacks and catch a jack, I’ll stack everyone, so let’s go. Reality is that doesn’t happen very often and you end up in a bloated pot with a likely under pair that’s way behind. Maybe one of the best things you can do for your game, is avoiding situations where you can be way behind.

Most of my strategy revolves around early aggression and post flop play. When the aggression gets thrown back into my face, I give up against most players without a real monster.

If I do end up in the hand when the flop comes down, I’m in my wheelhouse. Reading the players, reading the texture, knowing whose range got hit, claiming a board, getting away quick, reacting to the action, understanding the odds, judging villain’s comfort level, etc.

I mean you have to play the game and I will shove with nothing and make other moves if circumstances dictate, but not making any what the heck plays. Avoiding stacking off is worth being bluffed now and then.

It’s a boring game, you play 4 hours getting out early, folding, preserving your stack, waiting and then the situation arises and you double up in one hand. Then, you can’t happy tilt and spew it away.

One of my favorite compliments is when a guy sits down, sees my big stack and says o it looks like I’m coming for you. And the dealer pipes in, o no sir, you won’t be getting any of that stack.

Meanwhile, you watch the others playing too many hands for nickels and dimes, dwindling down, rebuying and playing happily just the same. To each their own…

Finally, just trying to help
But believe me, I make plenty of mistakes
Misreads, getting involved and feeling forced to follow through, value owning myself or just taking too long to see the cooler coming.

We need new players, welcome
It’s a beautiful game!
