Never, ever, fold a set?

Never, ever, fold a set?

4/8 Typical game.

V1 had played with me a lot. Like to call my raises with marginal/bad hands. V2 is about the sweetest most lost passive old indian lady you will ever meet.

Several limpers, i have 88 in the SB, I don't remember if I raised or not. I am raising here about 50% of the time, maybe more is optimal.

Flop is KQ8 rb. I bet, 3 callers.

Turn is a J. I bet, fold, V1 raises, V2 cold calls, I call.

River is an A. V1 bets, V2 calls.

You can fold this river. The rule about never folding sets in LHE doesn’t really apply when you have 4 to a straight (especially 4 to Broadway or 2345) or 4 to a flush on board.

this is an easy fold vs a bet into 2 players in any LHE game ive played (and ive played up to 30/60).

id raise pre but i dont hate limping.

I feel better about folding the winner now.

V1 had KJ, V2 had AQ

An easy river fold??????? what the hell are you talking about? He has a SET! why assume they have a str8?????? and just like he showed they both had two pair hands? Hell you should be raising that river Ace! You have a set! Crazy bad advice! and just because you play 30/60 doesn't mean you have 30/60 talent....just means you have the money to burn! Best advice I ever got on playing sets was this....if you don't lose alot of chips when your sets get cracked, you're not playing ur sets correctly!

I appreciate your perspective if not your delivery.

Yesterday I watch a a guy who prides his 'big river folds' to save one bet muck his winning hand in a 3 way pot with a 3 flush and 3 straight out as my mind is screaming 'call you have the best hand.'
Truly a different situation, but my point is I am looking for as many to reasons to call with a set as I can find in a hand with a bad run out. I could not find enough here.

It's not a fold for one bet.

It's not a fold for one bet.

Eh, it's a 4/8 game and there is a caller in front of him. Maybe people don't overcall with one-card straights anymore but this is a textbook spot to go for overcalls and I feel pretty good about dumping bottom set given the texture and action thus far.

V2 is about the sweetest most lost passive old indian lady you will ever meet.

If this is truly the case, she is calling with any pair and probably doesn't realize there is a 4 straight on the board. Why would you care if she bets or calls?

If a 4/8 player had a hard and fast rule where they always called one bet on the river with a set regardless of board they would come out ahead.

I may be biased by results but I probably call here.

A lot of people in V2s spot would at least consider raising the river with a ten.

And V1 betting the river . . . What hands raise the turn with a ten that weren’t AT or T9 already . . .

I also probably three bet the turn

Well at least it was a good hand to post as there is disagreement.

I learned along time ago that you sometimes have to just bite the bullet and over call on an ugly board.

It depends on the players, but with no reads (or with the reads given here) I would call river. If I think both players are competent, I fold. Raising river is bad against any players.

That’s a tough one, especially knowing the results. You’re getting 13:1 on the river which means you need to be good 7.1%~ of the time.

Decent reads on the player types. The woman who is loose passive ironically probably won’t go for the overcall a lot of the time because loose passives tend to not play very tricky. So we can heavily discount her having a straight. The guy who plays a lot of hands probably tries to “outplay” you. I think with your reads (if it is a fold in a vacuum) I do see a strong case for calling.

If I 3 bet the turn this hand def plays out differently and I am in a better position to play the river. Great advice.
