Dennis Purdy's Illus Guide to Texas Hold'Em
Just wondering if anyone's read this book. It was actually the first LHE book I ever read. It was like 10 pages on basic strategy and 150 example hands.
It's been fun to go back and read that book after having read SSHE by Miller,Sklansky et al, and think about the examples in terms of how SSHE would recommend playing them.
For the most part, Purdy's recommendations are spot-on. He doesn't go into as much detail as SSHE, but he does a good job of breaking it down for the layman, and his recommendations are usually exactly what SSHE would say to do in that situation.
One thing I like about his book is he goes into a lot of detail on common situations like exactly why you fold J6o on the button no matter how many limpers are behind you, i.e. what are you hoping for, two jacks? two sixes? A jack and a 6 and a board that doesn't pair in case someone else has a pp? For nobody to hit a straight or flush or higher two pair etc?
All in all, I think it's a good book for someone to read SECOND, AFTER they've read "the bible" - SSHE.
Thoughts?

I don't know what I was thinking 13 years ago when I started this thread. Just for a lark I happened to pick it up. In the very first example hand he recommends limping AA UTG to "keep more people in the hand" and "build a bigger pot". He later also recommends limping KQs UTG. He recommended calling a middle-position raise with A9s from the BB and then donking a KQ3tt board that gave hero a fourflush. He recommends coldcalling with AKo from the HJ after a UTG raise and 2 coldcallers. I'm only 13 hands into 150 examples.

UMMMM SEEMS LIKE GR8 MINDS THINK ALIKE LMAO!!!! SOUNDS LIKE WHAT IVE BEEN SAYING! YOU DONT PLAY A LOOSE NO FOLDEM HOLDEM GAME LIKE A 40/80 GAME! LIMPING AA & KQ'S ANNND ANY SUITED ACE UTG ...IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO SAME BASIC UNDERLYING PRINCIPLE.....WE WANT TO PLAY VOLUME POTS WITH HANDS THAT WILL WIN MORE THEN THEIR FAIR SHARE. AND AVOID HU POTS AT ALL COST!!!! IF I HAD ACES ON BUTTON AND IT FOLDED AROUND TO ME AND I KNEW BB WOULD CALL AND WE'D BE HU....ID FOLD! THE RAKE, THE NATURE OF HEADS UP....MOST PASSIVE PLAYER AT TABLE WILL TRY A BLUFF HEADS UP! AND UR STUCK HAVING TO CALL DOWN REALLY LIGHT OR GET RUN OVA. JUST SOOOOOO MANY BETTER SPOTS TO GET UR MONEY IN.
