Bike 20/40 - Can't Lose
I open 98s in middle position. I get one cold-caller and both blinds call. The main villain is in the BB. He is an older middle aged asian guy who is not awful, but is bluffy, overly tricky, and puts in too much action in bad spots.
Flop 885r. Blinds check, I bet, only BB calls.
Turn 8. BB checks, I bet, BB raises. He obviously cannot have the other 8 and has either a 5, another pocket pair, or some random airball. I think there is a nonzero chance he would fold something he thought he was raising for value if I 3bet, and I don't want him to give up on a bluff if that's what he has, so I figured that the best plan was just to call and then raise the river.

Yeah the only line is call.
I would call in game speed. But if the villain has a pocket pair bigger than Fives with a reraise he’s probably less likely to put you on an Eight because nobody plays quads like that.
The villain is going to freeze a three bet with anything less than qq which should be discounted and fold all his air and a decent amount of 5x
if its possible he has JJ+ I go ahead and 3. He puts in too much action, let him. River could cause him to check. Hard to put you on an 8. Very opponent dependent tho....
I think either line is defensible, so it really just comes down to how you think you're going to get the most bets in versus this particular opponent.
FWIW, if we ever want to bluff here, we cant just delay all our value. And if we're worried he might fold some hands if we 3b (as NFS suggests), then that does mean we can be doing some bluffing.
Is there any blocker effects on this hand? I mean a nine is a card we don’t want to block because we are targeting a hand like 99, we’d rather have A8 or something.
I could be completely wrong about that.
