Progressive jackpot

I have not played much live in a long time so this was new to me:

Players playing a dollar chip pre deal every hand for a chance at hitting a flopped straight etc with the 3 community cards only. Didn't figure out EV but it surely is largely negative.

This was at a 20-40 table.

So the question:
Can we use this to assist in an instant read of the player? And vice versa for the ones at the table not participating?

I've never heard of this, but yes, I'd assume anyone not playing is either a nit or a pro, and I would assume people playing are recreational but not necessarily better or worse than any other recreational player, but less nitty on average though.

They have a progressive jackpot promo like this at the Bike. People participate in it at every level (including 40/80 and 60/120), and the people who participate in it certainly tend to skew less nitty. There are a few otherwise good players who participate in it and they tend to be on the LAG side. I will very rarely play it, but I will occasionally join in if a VIP wants to get a bunch of people to do it.

My local has 5 or 6 tables setup for something similar for red chip NL games, 5(!) dollars a hand, optional. Huge sucker bet, but playing at a table where half or more are degening and playing the sucker bet is probably a good game to be in.

I can't figure out what the OP is describing. Could anyone explain it more clearly?

There’s a little circle or a computer you put a chip/money in before the cards are dealt. It has nothing to do with the actual game of poker, it’s a side game where you bet on the flop. Usually minimum to qualify is a three card straight and payout goes up based off hand strength. There’s usually a big payout for five card straight flush, must hit three card straight flush on flop to qualify. If the hand doesn’t reach a flop it’s a push.

Pretty dumb game but yea, the bad players sometimes love it.

Thanks. I've heard of that kind of thing online, but never in live poker.
