2024 World Series of Poker May 28th to July 17th ***No Spoilers***
The 2024 WSOP will take place at Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas from May 28 to July 17, 2024, with the Main Event running from July 3 to July 17. The Main Event – poker’s undisputed freezeout world championship – will have four starting days, beginning on Wednesday, July 3. Players may also register directly on Day 2.
The 20/40 mix at the WSOP cash game room has historically been very soft and is a great place to start, imo. As a PLO guy, it's actually the only consistently soft game I've found...
Is this still a carnival game mix? Last year it was 20/40 but like Super Stud, Drawmaha etc etc. I would love to play a 20/40 mix of HORSE, 2-7 TD, Badugi, or any combo of those games.
Some comments on the games spread this year vs previous years.
I have been playing across multiple casinos in Vegas consistently for the past year getting prepared for wsop and playing summer wsop cash games consistently for 10 or so. (Not much of a tourney grinder).
My opinion is that 4 card PLO is having a mini boom that is under the radar if you will, because many decent and experienced players are making good money live in casinos and private games that spread it, as stated above, people are
As a NLHE player, I left this weekend with the thought of "I better learn PLO". Big cash games all over in PLO. NL wait lists were just absurd everywhere.
Actually, Norman Chad sharing the booth with David Tuchman was rather sad. Tuch, having been an NLHE pro, can talk about the action sensibly, and he is genuinely funny. It raises the question of what Chad actually brings to the party.
I allow myself exactly one post about the WSOP announcers each year. Here is my rank-order list of announcers (it should be obvious which order it is):
Lon McEachern
David Tuchman
Maria Ho
Norman Chad
Brent Hanks
Jeff Platt
Ali Nejad
Nick Schulman

I think the "analytics" associated with NLHE having many more [Raise/Fold] hands per hour than Omaha, is probably the reason that casinos that CAN spread PLO will likely maximize those tables, and minimize NLHE. No flop no drop makes a big difference in the rake in a room full of NLHE tables vs a room full of PLO where one $20 raise is going to likely get the $7 drop. Interestingly enough the 3-6, 4-8, and 8-16 LHE is a gold mine for the casino, however most don't spread it.
The demand for NLHE is still here as the waitlist show, however the action pound for pound is in four card land.....
Or I'm giving the card room managers and higher ups too much credit lol
Back in the day, I used to think Chad was cringe and extremely ignorant to NLH and honestly poker in general from my perspective. But as the years went by, he improved his thoughts about NLH from about a 2 to a 5 (understood 2nd level thinking and was confident enough to go out on a limb). I felt he became funnier if you enjoyed some dark humor for an ESPN broadcast at least.
His banter with Lon became much more comfortable as well and I started to enjoy them. I believe it could be better, but the straight deep thinking strategy talk that sounds like golf commentating is not only boring, but also bad for the game. I don't care who the target audience is.
Lon and Jesse are a good duo on this table tonight. Norman Chad was awful last night. Just brutal.

I came to the same conclusion on watching Jnandez's last stream. The highest PLO stakes online featuring: Tony G punting, JNandez with some big misplays, Lazlo's finger stuck on the bet button, and a rich rec tilting/rebuying over and over..
What games are generally in that mix?
As an aside, what happened to the 20-40 O8 games? Usually, you'd see 1 to 4 tables running at the WSOP and Bellagio much of the summer, but those games aren't making at all this year. They all playing the mix now? I find most of the 1-2 Big O games pretty nitty and preferred the action of the 20-40 O8 game, but looks like I won't have a choice when I arrive in a couple of weeks.

Yeah that's the one I'm referring to. It's a carnival mix - mostly the crazier games, but usually some of the standard stuff like 2-7 TD, O8, and Badugi are in there too. If a new table opens, you can have a say in regards to adding/removing games.
The Nick Schulman show.
Played with this Rodriguez guy in a $200 nightly at WSOP two years ago. Not a bad spot to be in two years later!
Easy to be an armchair QB when you have no skin in the game, but the ICM nittiness in these ladder up spots has become quite mental. Guys are folding Ax 4-handed vs. Schulman's ATC opens when they have crumbs. Feels like you have to go for it at some point, but I've never played for $1M, so I guess I should just shut up.
How will another min cash in 10k 2-7 affect Chainsaws legacy?

I've never met or seen someone who enjoys Tuchman. Nice to meet you
Schulman GOAT
Lon and Norm must have some 'lifetime' contract that was attached when the WSOP was sold along the way. I do agree that Norm does add more 'poker' to sessions lately and that may have to do with his 'study' during Covid when he locked himself away with his dog(s). Lon in a live setting is disaster waiting to happen. Lots of stumbling over 'facts' and undramatic pauses in spots where we already know what he's going to say. All the partners have done a good job of not making him look bad when they need to come in with a correction. I don't think they have anyone in their ear (producer), but it seems like Lon loses track of what he's trying to say while looking at the papers or screens in front of the team.
Lon/Norm are a good team with the script in front of them but I'm not sure they even do much of that anymore.
I think it really shows that Tuc has more going on in his life than poker. But I also think he still handles spots both solo and partnered up. I think he knows he's not as up to speed with 'modern' poker, so he's not going to try and keep up with the Chat Pros.
While I think that Rodriguez's body language gave away that he didn't have AA/KK it still would be interesting to know Nick's thoughts on the QQ/AK flip were. He obviously decided that he would call off if facing an all-in before he 4b. That was a very big flip and almost a reward that both of them made it to HU since they went for it while still 8-handed.
It'd be great to see Ivey take one down .. or at least both he and DNegs at the PPC FT.
How many months of fuel will AKessler have if he gets to HU a $10k event? Granted it's a 'limit' event, so he can't get blown off his hand as easily, but for a guy who likes to chirp that would certainly be a boost in content. GL
Well played Nick Schulman, fully deserved.

Where do Jaime Kerstetter or Joe Stapleton fall on this list?

I'd love to see pokergo invite more top professionals in as co-commentators with Ali Nejad or Jeff Platt. Triton did this with Brian Rast, and Jonathan Jaffe for some short segments, and it was great. That was how Nick Schulman's talents were discovered in the first place
Personally am not a fan of Brett Hanks, find his efforts to be funny painful to listen to

McEachern in the $25k high roller last night was absolutely brutal.
There was a spot where Stamm, a somewhat inexperienced player, was in the SB and, before any action, asked the dealer for a count of the BB stack. The dealer brought the chips into the middle and broke them down, confusing all the players who were not in the hand. They all thought there was an all in and the dealer was counting down for that reason. When it came out that Stamm had simply asked for the count, Heath asked the sensible question of whether it was even within the rules to do so. Schulman agreed that he'd never seen it.
Sylvia--who was quite good on the broadcast--explained what was going on and McEachern was like, "Well of course the dealer can do that. Who else would do it? It's his job." Sylvia had to explain to him three different times that the BB had NOT gone all in, and that if he HAD gone on all in, then it would have been standard protocol for the dealer to give Stamm a count if he asked for one. It was actually cringe-inducing how long it took McEachern to grasp this fact.
His whole thing is he's an affable an inoffensive guy who has specialized in calling niche sporting events like the X Games, parasailing, and bowling. He was lucky to catch the poker wave during the boom and he rode it for many years. Good for him. Truly. He's an affable and inoffensive guy. But it's time to put him out to pasture.
Kessler vs Ivey for the bracelet is what we all need.
It seems really unusual to see someone come back from a short stack in a limit game.
That Lon is a disaster commentating a high roller. Maybe OK for the ME or something. Doesn't know much about poker.
