Cheating In The Main Event? Was Tamayo's WSOP ME Win Unethical?

Cheating In The Main Event? Was Tamayo's WSOP ME Win Unethical?

Doug Polk has released a video showing Tamayo's rail clearly using a laptop for assistance. You can also see Joe McKeeha

Fair . I took some artistic liberties to make a broader point: coaching, technology on the rail at the most prestigious final table in poker destroys the aura and cool factor that hooked people during the boom. Of course, this is a minor problem relative to the cheating/ethics debate. Lena and Griff both have some gunslinger in them. The casual fans can dig that. I'm bemoaning the missed opportunity for some good PR and broader audience appeal, which poker DESPERATELY needs.

Completely agree with all your points. This is absolutely and unequivocally bad for poker. I'm very keen to see how the rules evolve for this, what happens for WSOP Paradise will be interesting indeed.

All good. I did not interpret your comment as a defense of the solver use.

Thanks. The clarification wasn't necessarily for you, it's the internet and there's always a percentage of people who take any point that isn't utter condemnation and think it's a defence. I was already accused of defending it earlier in the thread.

That's the nut worst story line: "amateur cheated out of main event win".

Maybe Tamayo can do coaching videos. "How I won the ME with real time solver help with ranges so that I would stop folding QQ preflop to a single raise."

They probably didn't think much of it at the time, to be honest. I was watching and just assumed, as with previous years, that they had the stream running. We didn't know about the solver until later when the picture was posted, it wasn't really an issue during the live stream.

They also wouldn't have thought much of it because the players only went to the rails when there was an all in and call. Griff was 'scurrying' just as much as Tamayo was. The casual observer would have just seen them goi

Alan Keating said on Doug Polk’s podcast that him and his group of friends were shouting at the tv about it and couldn’t believe it was being allowed.

As stated earlier in the thread, the optics of 3 nerds colluding with each other and software “between hands” is just as bad as knowing they’re cheating for the perception of recreational players.

Also, can the poker players on the poker forum stop saying “between hands”. The action was closed but there were still cards up when he was at the rail. It was not “between hands”.

Lmao I thought I’d be on sabbatical by now but had to respond to this

No they shouldn’t stop saying it’s “between hands”. As soon as action is complete it’s between hands. At least for anything that matters.

I know it’s a bs technicality, but if they’re gonna say “we technically didn’t break the written rules or hear the verbal announcements before all the tournaments” then we can stop saying “between hands”, technically.

For all intents and purposes it was between hands

For all intents and purposes it was between hands

But for all intents and purposes it was within the tournament area.

What’s up with the clandestine moderation and post removal? I wrote a totally reasonable response and it’s been deleted with no implication as to why it was removed. Not the first time that’s happened either.

it wasnt he checked during the all ins multiple times

it wasnt he checked during the all ins multiple times

So when he checked he could no longer change his decision. Huge difference between checking to make sure you make the right decision and checking to if you made the right decision

Wasn't checking to see if he made the right decision. Was looking at solver preflop ranges based on stack sizes etc. to raise, call, 3-bet, etc. to help play future hands.

Any tournament that is individual, not a team thing, should be one player to a tournament. We already have one player to hand. A tournament connects many hands together so make it one player to a tournament. Any tournament that is human, not a bot/solver/AI thing, should not allow any computer/solver assistance. Players should be able to know they are playing against a real human and not an AI, and not a human assisted by AI. Doesn't matter if it's in between hands; the tournament connects all the hands together into one thing. Getting assistance at any point effects the rest of the tournament.

It takes a certain type of player to get much out of those charts on the rail. I would think of what adjustments to make, rather than memorizing ranges. Looking at charts ahead of time might help to get a feel for ranges. I wouldn't be able to memorize ranges that change every time I go to the rail.

now that GG has bought WSOP i'm sure they'll take steps to combat GTO assisted play...

Now that some time has passed, has Jack Effel made any statement? I haven't seen any.

What a prick

He pretty much admits to it.

I have a question. When some one is reading from a cellphone it's easy for those sitting next to them to see the screen even if they are not really trying to do so. These guys had an open laptop on the rail. If another spectator sitting a few rows back saw something fishy wouldn't they be morally obligated to report the alleged cheating?

Putting the expectation of policing this on the rail for a Vegas event is kind of absurd. There’s probably people on Hunichen’s rail that can’t read.

Most of the hands you don't need to memorize, just a few. You don't need to memorize pocket pairs, KQ suited etc

Wouldn't be surprised if such a thing comes out one day the way WSOP treated this issue

If not downright cheating at the very least his tactics were very very poor sportsmanship.

I hope this serves as a lesson for those who say "all the old school pros are scummy as hell". If there is money on the line, old, young, experienced, mildly experienced, most people will cheat others out of money. Ethics doesn't exist in this type of world unless you prioritize it.

Show some ****ing character in your life.
