Dead Money - New poker film.
Nice hood. Waited for the inevitable all in push,
Is it about some underground game getting robbed?
Rough pedigree... the director (Luc Walpoth) has only two feature-length credits, neither of which did anything. The writer (Josh Wilcox) owns an even rougher filmography.
Then again, Rounders was penned by a duo of rookie screenwriters, while John Dahl had done mostly music videos plus the erotic thriller The Last Seduction up to that point. So you just never know.
On the flip side, as Matt Savage pointed out on these forums, Lucky You had an accomplished director, an accomplished writer, plus a number of professional poker players to consult, and that was an absolute dumpster fire. Again, you never know.
haha it looks pretty bad, prob gonna watch it still for the lol
that was a tough watch
1. looks like schlock
2. Id still rather watch it than marvel trash # 965
This actually looks a lot better than I expected. Not sure what you guys expected for a movie with a budget of probably a few million bucks.
The trailer looks all violence, nothing about poker. Too many movies like that. Wouldn't watch it based on the trailer, at least if I wasn't really interested in poker.

Also, Emile Hirsch shadowed Alan Keating who consulted for the movie, for whatever that's worth.
I'm a sucker for poker movies so I'll tune in. Tempering my expectations though.

Us poker players are badass, I bumped into Alex Pereira the other day and he noticed my two plus two shirt he asked "voce joga poker?" I told him yes, he said sorry sorry and walked away. He knew his limitations.

No Hollywood executives would give the green light for a movie that's 100% about poker. Beggars can't be choosers. I'm assuming we will get some decent poker scenes here and there. At least it looks better than Lucky You.

A number of years ago, I sat down at a PokerStars sponsored live game in Rio.
When I said I was a poster on 2+2 , the other players, including Fat Ronaldo, just pushed all their chips to me and fled the casino.
The official synopsis is not promising: "Professional poker player Andy and his girlfriend Chloe are involved in a crazy 24 hours after a home poker game is robbed. Andy finds up playing the largest poker game of his life as both of their lives are in danger."
Also not encouraging: IMDB says the movie's title has been changed to "Degenerate."

"Rounders" and "Cincinnati Kid" were mostly about poker. Some of these movies are just about violence.
Why all the hate for Lucky You? Yeah it wasn’t the best poker movie, but considering all the horrible poker movies out there it was actually better than most. It’s biggest problem was the casting of the main character, Eric Bana was awful.
What we really need is EuroRounders adapted to the big screen.
Looks like a fun movie, but something tells me it could be better if they had him playing 1/3 and stealing $1400 from a coffee table while everyone else was out smoking.
There is more than enough ugliness and horror in this world, can't someone make a nice movie about poker? Vince Van Patten did a good job in Seven days to Vegas.
Doesn't need to be mostly about poker. Robberies of home games happen, and make a good topic in a movie. However, this movie seems mostly about violence.

It's been written, even won some honors:

But getting from script to screen is the hard part, especially with the current environment in Hollywood.
