WSOP Event Cancelled - Low Turnout
https://www.cardplayer.com/poker-news/29...
Thoughts on what happened here? I know it says satellites didn’t finish in time for the event to start but that brings up another concern about how that could have logistically happened. Regardless, only four were willing to lay the buy-in? What a mess.
Normal WSOP bracelet events on GG open to normal locations have massive fields and awesome guarantees.
No you want to cherry pick one online event and ignore everything else thats gone on with wsop and draw a conclusion from it.
I don't know anything about this event but I know watering down bracelets hasn't hurt
turnouts overall.
They draw players who want to say they have bracelet. I know tons of terrible players that want to me win one really bad.

I’m not necessarily drawing conclusions as a whole but you have to admit, having a measly 4 entrants in a WSOP bracelet event is bizarre. Home games have better turnouts than that.
If this is an anomaly, something still clearly went awry and I’m wondering what people think that something is.
Dilution is likely one factor but 4? 4?!? Something is amiss and I don’t know what it is. I’m genuinely curious as to what theories people have.
Isn’t a lot of this just people deliberately waiting around to register late? Don’t high rollers often start with one table but get >50 entries by the end?
You really think they couldn’t find five people willing to play for a WSOP bracelet for $5k in all of Nevada, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey?
No

Yeah and that’s why they sometimes don’t start
Surprised to see nobody has mentioned how badly their online product has gone downhill since they changed software at the start of summer:
-the mobile app doesn't work. If you switch apps (to send a text for example) while playing, you will fail the geolocation check when you come back until restarting the phone. This is a terrible user experience and drives away many recs.
-they basically ended rakeback for tournaments, while still charging the same rake including 900+100 for bracelets. The max
This all sounds horrible. Do they respond to complaints?
The events start too late for recs in 2 of the 3 states. Makes zero sense. Maria Konnikova won her bracelet at 5:45 AM on a Monday morning.
I think you can count on one hand the number of non-satellite players that would register this from 3 states. I don’t think you’re late registering if you plan to play a $5300.
It sounds like they were running satellites that didn’t finish on time. They weren’t willing to overlay $40k - $21200.
These three state online tournaments should not be considered “bracelet events”
We already have bracelet events and ring events(circuit)
They should use another type of jewelry
Possible suggestions in order:
1) Watch event
2) Earring event
3) Nose Ring event
They could give a nice watch to the winner
With only three states participating, these events just don’t have the feel of being bracelet worthy.
Not in any meaningful way. Mostly denying there's an issue or blaming the user.

Fwiw I was planning to play near the end of registration and know several other regs who would have done the same. I think that if this event started it would have easily gotten 50 entries, likely 100+. I'm a MTT specialist, I don't want to play 300bb deep vs sickos at the beginning.
Freudian slip?

I like it. The Stu Unger 3-state WSOP Nose Ring Series.
For the total degens that can't wait for the next real series ...
First place is a nose ring and a bag of blow.

You're coming at it from the perspective of bracelets being prestigious which isn't the case.
There is literally someone with a bracelet from the 70s in an event that only had 2 entrants.
Bad players chasing and sometimes winning bracelets is good for poker.
You can come in 10th in the main for a million and no bracelet or win a bracelet for 200k. The 200k win isn't more prestigious but if you think bracelets are this super special thing you'd think it was which makes no sense.
We also have way more people playing poker tournaments than we did pre boom-it makes all the sense in the world we have a lot more bracelet events.

Tbf to that guy there were only 2 entrants because no one dared risk their money playing against him.

That’s fair!
WSOP.com wont overlay. They needed 8 to start and the guarantee was 40k, 8*5300=42400 so they cancel unless they have the guarantee met upon start?
I would hope that’s only true for these super high buy in events.
Most high stakes regs who were buying in directly probably waiting for the satty to finish to play with weaker players, plus a lot of regs choose to late reg and play a stack size that they are well studied with instead of deepstacked play early on.
They need to incentivize registering on time for low field high buyin events.. The PokerGo Studio reduces the rake on the buyin for people who show up on time, I think more high stakes events should have something like that.

Yeah they've had a few nonsensical starting requirements over the years and definitely lean conservative on the requirements compared to elsewhere. They've recently had some 1ks not start that I think required 8 to start with ~30k gtd and 4 hours of late reg. My all-time favorite was a promotional 25k freeroll based on some leaderboard that required 14 to start, but only 12 people qualified/entered.

yeah i think its more of a late reg thing too. there's plenty of people who would have fired it, but dont wanna play deep stacked from level 1 against the best players on the site
been seeing a lot of max late reg discussion going on...i tried it out on some low stakes MTTs myself and can definitely see the pros to it but the cons are also highly apparent. for example max late regging with just 10bbs seems to be super high variance. Like i would rather do that with a tourny that wasnt too high stakes for my bankroll but with a juicy payout structure.
Not sure I'd want to risk 5k on an ALL in or fold scenario if my bankroll was only say $50k or less.
Just a thought is all...im not too studied up on NLHE MTT's. Maybe runnign up a 10bb stack to 25BBs is enough to give some pro a pretty decent edge

Even 500k would be a short bankroll to play 5ks.
But I agree with you that max late regging is very high variance.
The $250k bracelet event at this year’s WSOP had -nine- players at the start, and ended up with 75 entrants.
