NY state on the cusp of banning sweeps poker

Looks like this opposition bill is zooming through the legal process. Wouldn't be shocked if sites like club wpt gold are forced to pull out of NY state by the end of year. I also wouldn't be shocked to see other states follow the example.

The senator spearheading the effort has been unable to build coalition and support to regulate internet gaming in the state for over a decade. But of course lawmakers have no problem eliminating things they do not like.

Very frustrating to see the first green shoot in US online poker in over a decade immediately crushed by politicians.

In New Jersey, assemblyman Clinton Calabrese introduced a bill to ban sweepstakes platforms, just months after advocating for their legalization. Similar bills have also been proposed in Connecticut and Mississippi.

This paragraph in that article fully shows what POS scumbags these politicians are. They stand for nothing, and will oppose or support anything according to what lobbysits donates the most to them.

Plus even Addabbo has acknowledged the bill to legalize online in NY is going nowhere this year and probably next. They take and never give

Sorry, New Yorkers.

And everyone else affected.

It's too bad Gretchen Whitmer isn't president:

She legalized Michigan's poker scene in her first days in office.

I can only imagine how much money the casino lobbyists paid these guys. America HOME OF THE FREE

I really don't care for legalized poker unless the player pool is all 50 states which isn't happening anytime soon or even in my lifetime. Just a few states linked together means nothing for traffic. Pre black friday was the best it will ever be and nothing will ever come close. The entire world on two main sites lol, sucks to even think about how good it was

Man, code doug is really backfiring

So Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York all have bills to ban sweepstake sites...... plus Idaho, Michigan, Montana, and Washington already do. What in the world was ClubWPT Gold thinking starting a sweeps site knowing this was all going on LMAO!!!

They must have some really terrible lawyers.....forgot to add they have some terrible Devs building the site as well

Anyone in NY that wants to oppose this, use this website where you can vote "Yay" or "Nay", and you can also include a message to your representative on why you do or dont support it.

Its happening in a lot of other states too BTW:

"In Mississippi, a bill to ban sweeps operators has passed both chambers but the House lumped in sports betting language before sending it back to the Senate. Connecticut, Florida, Nevada and New Jersey all also have pending legislation to curb sweeps in at least one chamber."

It's nice to think we have an impact, but put yourself in the shoes of the average lawmaker. You're told about the sweeps model, which by the way is a laughable workaround to the current laws - I think we all know that. Very very stupid and hypocritical laws which support widespread sports gambling and degeneracy in the stock market and crypto but lolban internet poker. All your colleagues are voting to ban sweeps. You really dgaf and only have so much political capital, why would you stick your neck out on this issue? It's a no brainer that this legislation breezes through with ease and sweeps are done in the state.

The sweeps pools are currently 46 states + Canada in the not too distant future. Pretty damn close. And WPT is about as legit an operator as you can ask for.

I said legalized, I know what the sinking ship sweeps model is.....it's over.

I guess you didn't read my post from last night lol

Yea I mean I think online poker should be legal but this workaround is a joke so this is pretty expected.

The knobs in suits will always interfere in things they don't understand. Im Irish and they passed a bill which is likely to leave us in the same scenario as most of the US.

Funny thing is the TD responsible for it demonstrated he doesn't know much about poker and thinks it is the same as pit games.

This knob is now our minister for housing, what could go wrong?.

I expect to be playing unregulated and homeless eating out of a skip by the end of the year.

but I can do a 16 leg parlay on bahrainian cricket. OK

It’s too bad FanDuel and DraftKings don’t offer a hybrid poker/sportsbetting variant.

While I dont disagree the workaround is a joke, there are several comparable situations where the rules created a gray area that becomes an industry norm and theyre left to operate. Weed legalization starting back when it was for a "donation", daily fantasy, poker apps designed for "play money", vpn to poker, the list goes on...

daily fantasy got shut down/regulated in a lot of places, those poker apps are illegal but they're run by so many different people with small unions etc it's hard to shut down, vpning to poker also illegal. some sites cared, some sites didn't. something being hard to stop doesn't make it legal. A guy with 100 players on his app game with players sending each other money can last a lot longer than a sweepstakes site like WPT if the government wants to shut it down.

It's because of sports betting that all of this is going on. Companies are using the sweepstakes format to enable minors to bet on sports (and poker too, for kids who aren't as "cool").

It sucks for us as poker players, but it is a huge problem that probably needs to be addressed.

What I'm unsure about is if that sort of ban would affect the poker apps like Pokerbros and ClubGG.

Get it while it’s good boys

This is already happening. Pokerbros now tells me upon trying to login, located in Las Vegas Nevada, that due to local regulations I am unable to play on the app.

That situation's slightly different, but it does illustrate how Pokerbros seems to be pretty careful when it comes to skirting regulations. Compared to, say, Bovada, which likes to live on the edge.

I'm expecting the list of states you can't access these apps from to grow.

I received an email from Bovada last year saying they were exiting my state. I can no longer login and my account has been closed. They have left several states. I think it's due to the sports betting because I can still play on Ignition
