States demand DOJ action to dismantle offshore gambling rings

States demand DOJ action to dismantle offshore gambling rings

https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/sta...

All bluster or could there be something here?

How concerned should we be about this for sites like ACR/Coin/Ignition? I assumed the sites being offshore + using crypto would mean they're reasonably safe (e.g. libgen still exists which I assume the US Government isn't a fan of either) but curious what others think

Would this only affect Americans or would the sites themselves get shut down entirely? Seems like they're trying to compel the DOJ to shut down the entire domains.

does anyone know anymore about this?

Ignition were only banned in 4 States while Bovada in 17, this could means they are licensed in a different country.
I've checked the both sites and they are licensed in Comoros, so I'm clearly missing something

Yes but it is not the reason, in Brazil bodog has shutdown the sport betting part of their client and continue to operate.
It seems more like a regulation issue, where poker is regulated Ignition doesn'to operate while in other states it is a a somewhat grey area

Anyway this is a good article imo

EDIT: a month ago a C&D letter was filed vs Ignition Casino, but it doesn't seems it seems to care

has anyone got more information on this?

would they shut down the sites completely? or would it just be to US customers?

the doj were responsible for black friday weren't they?

With 50 attorney generals pushing for this and $400 billion on the line it seems like a matter of time before the offshore sites get banned in the US. Ill be playing them until i cant and will probably leave the US when it happens.

will our money on the sites be frozen? if it happens

Yes DOJ orchestrated Black Friday. As I recall, they did NOT shut down the domain outside of the US. Technically US DOJ has not power/jurisdiction outside of the US thus can't shutdown a site outside the US. But let's be realistic. US DOJ is one of the biggest dogs around. Technicalities don't always get in the big dog's way.

What value would the US government have in shutting down sites for non-Amercians?

Fr f this administration.

If you look up the link I've posted about about Michican C&D letters, it seems some have complied while others totally ignored it. Also, sites like Chico flips the finger to the govmt and continue to operate even in the regulated states which is against the law clearly.
I don't understand why Ignition only takes US clients only and its network only accepts Americas, Canada and Australia, why they don't get ROW and increase their revenue? Again, I'm missing something here

Techincally DOJ or any other entity, cannot block access to Ignition or other sites but they can make it cumbersome so clients just give up. The avg Joe isn't that tech savvy so it could work.

I dont understand how americans cant play poker online but can gamble on almost anything ffs

Not really more info, just more context.

State gaming regulatory agencies have largely failed to take action against illegal gambling sites because of the difficulties involved in an underfunded state agency trying to prosecute international criminal organizations (it's not easy). Many state AGs, and the AGA, have tried to get help from the Feds, but have never really made any progress. This story is just the most recent attempt (and one of the most organized) to get help from the people that are better situated to do something about it.

There are civil and criminal mechanisms in law to seize domain names (think Black Friday) and enforce criminal prohibitions on illegal gambling activity, but it takes a lot of resources. The licensed gaming industry has an interest in stamping out competition that isn't playing by the rules, and state's also have an interest in preventing illegal gambling because they don't make any money from it the way they do with licensed gaming, and it's not safe for the consumer. If you have money on these platforms, you are taking a risk by playing on them. You won't personally be prosecuted, but you have no assurance that the money will be there when you go to withdraw and no recourse when the site screws you over.

The DOJ has other pressing matters (like effectuating martial law in major US cities, and removing the President's name from the Epstein files apparently) so no one really knows if the DOJ will do anything, and if they do when it will happen. The head of the AGA sent a letter during Biden's term asking for the same thing and nothing happened, so it's not the first time that this has come up. It is unique in that so many AGs, from different political parties, signed on though.

Seems AG Andrew Bailey of Missouri wrote the letter and got the other AGs to sign off on it. Who knows how big of a priority this is for each state.

Not sure DOJ would be able to do much as offshore operators Ignition Casino, ACR Poker, Coin Poker mostly use crypto for transactions. Phil Nagy CEO of ACR would be arrested immediately upon re-entering the states. Coin Poker won't even publicize its CEO for the same reason.

We could, but companies figured out there is way more money to be made in sports betting and gambling so they push for that instead.

It has already been proven that crypto is not anonymous, not untraceable. The gov't can and has seized crypto funds.

I can gamble, online, on the most insane props as long as it's the stock market. Then it's "investing." Tesla to 5000 by end of week? Bet.

What "resources" do you think it takes to seize a domain? I'm sure it takes more than Pam Bondi snapping her fingers, like a signature from a judge and the right tech people to call, but it ain't exactly the Bay of Pigs.

There's of course a reasonable chance DOGE fired the people with those phone numbers in their address books. 🙄

thats crazy to leave the US bc you play offshore sites, but dont just leave the US to play ROW sites + offshore.

The government gets a court order and either sends it to the domain registrar or VeriSign.

... and if the domain registrar is offshore?
