BB defend ranges: seem too tight at WSOP ME FT

I was watching the final table, and they were folding hands like J9o and 98o in the BB. Was this just weak/tight because of the money involved? I would think you should fold any somewhat playable hand getting 4.5-1 immediate odds.

The ICM pressure of the pay jumps and the value of your chips has a huge impact there. Defending wide is probably profitable by chip EV, but at a final table you run both the risk of bleeding away or getting your money in bad that way.

You see some tight play that can't be good, ICM pressure or otherwise. Someone folded A7o in the SB to an open limp.

Someone raised ATs, checked the flop and turn on Kxx and folded to half pot on the turn. The caller had a K, so it wouldn't have worked, but weird to just give up on that flop.

The tournament winner, besides folding QQ to a single raise on the final table bubble, 3-bet/folded AQo 3-handed. A 4-bet was more likely than a flat, so either flat initially or be ready to gii with that hand.

For tournaments this big, the utility curve of each player probably influences almost everyone to play more passively instead of playing for 1st place.

The jump from 1m to 2m is significant, increasing the odds of winning 10M by 10%? Not as much.
