Confused about the raise pre-issue, every single sim I have ever looked at would have this as a raise.

Did you consider betting the flop for, say, 15% of the pot; any aces you can fold out print, and it doesn't have to work very often. Assuming some folds, standard size here is 1/3rd, are we really that scared of 88 or a 4 or aces if just flatted?
