I'm new to poker, did I punt here?

Am I correct in thinking that I shouldve known that he must have had a stronger set based on his aggressive betting here?

I probably would have been way more agressive on the flop with all the possible draws on the board.

So I don't see alot of runouts where all the money isn't going in the pot.

You probably could think about losing bottom set vs this exact line AP but I too would be looking to x/r and gii on the flop or turn. As a rule set v set is rarely something to worry about.

I woul c/r to 26bb on the flop and bet big or JAM all non diamond turns.

On that dynamic texture fastplaying is important and on your stake people are not able to get away from AA AK type hands and you want to charge the draws.
So flop i think we already need to raise the 1bb donk if it would be less dynamic like K73r i defently like the call.
Turn as played also important check raise all in you wan to get the money in before some scare card rolls off so getting max value from AA AK like i mentioned is key.
Intresting thing for river is if villain is that if river is scary for him then his shove gets super nutted and our 77 becomes a bluffcatcher.
So here the T is already bit ugly but still a call he can go here for value with AA still but close.
If river comes a bit worser card like a Q or even worser flush gets there then we would need to find a fold.
Main takeaway is by you playing to passive you miss out of value and ask your self on river is he still valuebetting worser if not your hand gets a bluffcatcher and population underbluffs this kind of situations.

You should consider losing your stack in set-overset situations as coolers.

It may be worth avoid getting into multiway pots with 22-55 as you can only be on the wrong side with those, ao arguably you make your own bed with those low pairs, but 77 is high enough. Players are happy to stack off with two pairs/top two pairs so your set will be good enough on dry boards most of the time.

It's more of a cooler than stacking off against AA and KK preflop with QQ-s and AK. I recommend opting to play 3bet or 4bet pots with those instead of getting it in - against regs.

Ok thanks for the responses, so I should consider set over set a cooler i.e. I shouldnt fold for fear of loosing to a higher set when he bets like that. I should have been more aggressive on the flop/turn though to charge draws and overpairs/AA AK

Yeah you have to be deeper stacked before set over set isn't a cooler
