How to improve.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to be posting this but I was wondering if any of you could offer any insight or guidance.

I have been playing mostly live 1/2 in London at the usual hippodrome, vic etc.. and overall I'm down around £700 in live poker over the past 2-3 months. I have attached my poker craft for my online earnings, -$906.

I'm currently at an impasse. Unsure of if I should even be trying to play live if I can't beat 0.10/0.25 online, I usually play full ring with 0.10 ante.

How do I improve from here? Do I look at gto wizard to analyse my hands or is that too advanced for this stage, usually I am quite good with studying and learning. I am studying maths at oxford so I like to think that I am somewhat naturally adept to learning and picking up things quite quickly but I am kind of unsure where to go to?

Any guidance is much appreciated.

It is the right place I believe. Or maybe Beginners Questions.

Tough question. I started playing as a serious rec 12 years ag at nl2. Used books basically, Crushing the Microstakes by blackrain79. The book is pretty outdated, and judged by what I know now, pretty bad, but made me a 7 bb/100 winner at nl2 back then.

I would play much lower than nl25, nl2 or nl5 max, and spend the money you lost at nl25 on seeking a coach straight away. Put in your head that if you stick to those games you're playing, you will keep losing similar amounts at these same rates, so if that's the case, better to invest the money on something that might improve your understanding of the game, than to just spend it playing.

Can't recommend anyone, you might want to check the coaching subforum. I would look for someone that likes simplified strategies, understands data incentives, and who, per the testimonials, is recognized as a good teacher, very good at explaining things.

Somehow, I don't think GTO Wizard, or any solver, would help you here. Especially using it as a tool to analyze your hands.

Online and live are totally different games.
If you do have to compare, 1/2 live is like 2-5NL.

You can start by sites like Upswing Poker.
Start by learning the basics. Preflop charts, postflop plays etc. Pot odds, implied odds, outs. etc
Then eventually you can watch poker training videos of how good players play and think.
Then eventually implement everything you've learned into your own game.
Then review the hands you've played with others.

So basically learn/imitate/create a winning system.
Crush 2NL, then move up.
Find and fix leaks, rinse and repeat.

Most of the money are made from fishes. I remember some outdated advice was to stay out of regs ways. But staying out of the their way doesn't make you a better player. You might lose money in the process as well.
To get real good, you'd have to crush regs as well. There's a reason they are not playing higher stakes.
Identify their leaks, everybody has leaks.
If they don't have obvious leaks, you can start by pushing it out going crazy aggro vs them especially in position. See how they respond. Adjust and readjust.
Push for every single tiny edges.

Sounds like you are lacking solid basics, is that a correct assumption?
I always recommend Red Chip Poker CORE - it has all the basics to build a solid game and it's structured very clearly.

Once you have the basics down, the best way to learn is get a program like Flopzilla and review hands with it in depth.

Hi,

Yeah, clearly some gaps in my fundamentals. I did the phil galfonds foundations course but I am not sure if all his principles apply to me at this stage, e.g minimum defence frequency etc.

I think some of the most important beginner concepts are:

opening ranges
3bet ranges
pot odds
implied odds
cbetting
board texture
double & tripple barelling
bet sizing

The great thing about Red Chip Poker CORE is that you can just learn what you want. The course is divided in chapters, you'll find a chapter for all of the above and much, much more.
It's also very cheap - just don't let the sub run if you're not using it.
