[SkillDiff] Official Thread
Hi all,
I don't know if we qualify as "legitimate" or really as a "poker room" but I'll leave it to smarter people than me to decide.
SkillDiff is a totally free to play (there is literally no way to spend money on this site as of right now) poker game where you play against a series of bots with different personalities and play styles. Then your opponent(s) play the exact same series of bots with the exact same hands dealt. Your score is simply the highest chip count you achieved during your run before busting.
We have 2 main game modes right now:
- 1. The Daily Diff - This is a once-per-day competition where everyone plays the exact same run. There's a leaderboard and plenty of ways to share your results to shove in your friends' faces. You don't even need to sign up for this mode if you don't care about the leaderboard. Think of it like Wordle for poker (uh, kind of).
- 2. 1v1 - This is just you vs one other human playing the same run. These cost gold coins, which is just play money. You can also issue open and direct challenges in this mode to settle personal grudges (or, you know, have fun with friends).
People who might enjoy SkillDiff:
- Time poor players - Each run takes 5-10 minutes. No carving out 4+ hours to play in a tournament. Just play while you're pooping
- Easily distracted players - You're playing against bots. They're very patient. You can take a phone call and come back to your run 2 hours later and pick up exactly where you left off
- People who think they're naturally unlucky - You get the same exact cards as everyone else. Same bad beats for everyone!
- People who want to practice heads-up - Zero pressure and the bots won't judge your play (other people might, but not the bots)
- Competitive players who want to prove they're better than me - In 1v1 mode, Skill Rating is super easy. We use Glicko-2 which is like ELO for our SR and that's what we base our main global leaderboard on
People who might not enjoy SkillDiff:
- Very serious players - Yes, I know this is a lot of 2+2, hence me not being sure we're "legitimate." But if you only want to play in real time against real players for real money, this isn't that
- People who hate fun - Yes, I know this is a lot of 2+2 (sorry, sorry, sorry)
We were in a friends and family testing round, but I didn't have enough friends and/or family to make for a reasonable testing group, so now we're in open beta. Because words have no meaning. So I invite you all to give it a shot and let me know what you think.

Concept sounds similar to the short lived DuplicatePoker.com that was around during the boom
I never played it, but I do remember hearing about it. And yes, for sure there are some similarities in that you're playing the same hands as the other participant(s) in that match. I think a lot of the details are different (although to be honest I don't actually know how it was played).
It's for sure not for everyone, but it's actually pretty fun browsing the split-screen replayer to see how you played the same "key" hands differently. As a daily 5-10 minute activity that you can really compare apples-to-apples results with your friends I highly recommend it! (But I would say that.)
