Plumbers possibly stole something anything I should do?
Had the house repiped a couple months ago. There is an attic access point in the closet in my office. Nobody ever goes in my office other than me. The plumbers were in there alone for attic access.
My office is themed as though it is Indiana Jones’ office. I have a bunch of adventure-y type things in there including authentic ancient artifacts and tools and such. It’s supposed to be as though it is Indiana Jones’ office from the 1930s.
Anywho, I had a 4,000 year-old terracotta bust on the bookshelf and it’s not there anymore. I have a bunch of artifacts in there so I didn’t notice it missing until now.
I can’t prove the plumbers took it but nobody else ever goes in that office and it is definitely missing now.
Any thoughts on what, if anything, I can or should do about this situation?
Really nice! It's almost disturbing that I have a couple of old items from my parents up in the attic or somewhere that are very close to a couple of your items--although yours are most certainly older--or maybe not.
How hard was it to find that typewriter? Is it functional?
Just from looking at those pics there are two things that bother me, but it may be the lighting or how well some old things refinish/polish up.
The coat rack looks too new to go with the hats, etc.
The binoculars seem too small for the case they are displayed with, but maybe that's an optical illusion.
It's good to hear the bust has found a safer home. The field manual is terrific! Are there any special storage precautions you have to take with it? Is your region dry enough to preserve it? That thing wouldn't last six months in the humidity here.

Oh yes, I live in a very dry region and I keep it out of the sun. I’m sure there’s probably something more I could do to preserve it better and I’ll look into that.
I agree about the rack. I should start specifically looking for a new one to replace it. This one was convenient because it actually has some knobs about halfway down that I put the whip on. Otherwise, trying to figure out how to display a whip in an attempted non-chalant manner is more difficult than one thinks.
The binoculars came with that case and they fit well in it. I think it might just be the angle or whatever.
But it’s an ever-changing room with stuff being added to it as I come across it.
The typewriter is functional but needs new ribbon. I don’t use it, though. It’s just for aesthetics. I keep my laptop in the drawer of the desk and bring it out when I need to do actual work. It was a little tricky to find one more suitable to the era I was going for but I got lucky at a local auction and picked it up for a fair price.
Good call on the coat rack. I’ll start hunting for something more suitable to go with the room.
Thanks! Still not exactly what I’m going for but as time goes on and more items catch my eye, the room evolves. I’m hoping it will be more what I’m envisioning someday.
I want more old maps and ancient artifacts. There are a couple sites that specialize in ancient artifacts but it’s usually pretty common stuff like oil lamps and what not.
Finding more unique items that fit in my budget can be difficult. But the hunt is the fun part!
The coat rack you have might be ok if it looked more weathered. Maybe if you could distress it??? Or it might be easier to pick one up at an estate sale or something?
My folks had a couple of pairs of binoculars with similar cases that are still around here somewhere. The much larger one was from the late '50s, but the other one was probably from the late '40s or early '50s. That case looks only slightly more modern than yours, but the binoculars look older--at least as I remember them. I think they may be accessible, so I may try to pull them out if I run across them.
Less accessible are some older items my dad had from the '40s or earlier that might fit in with your desk paraphernalia. I don't recall exactly what all he had, but if I happen to run across them (may not be likely if I don't have to go hunting for something else), I'll take a couple of pics and send them to you. They might even be in need of a new home.

That would be great! Thanks!
I'm no tone to keep old stuff around, but that is pretty cool, especially given the theme you're going for. Nice work!
Now go to Nepal or India or Africa or whatever and get the ark to complete the room.

Oh man, I’d love to be the one to discover that! And I certainly won’t open it or even touch it, for that matter. The Ethiopia location theory is interesting to me. If you’re not familiar with it, there’s a lot of sources of info out there about it for a little armchair Ark hunting.
Wow... that stuff is amazing... thank you
This is ike 2006 OOT in 2024 what a world.
As a Boston guy, lololol
You need to put a weight sensitive booby trap under it before you let anyone else into the house.
Best thread title ever.
Also, awesome stuff!
You need a leather whip

Do it! Do it!
Or at least into his office.
The title certainly wouldn't lead anyone to the treasure, would it? Maybe put a clue in the thread title?
It's in a private collection!
But I agree. Maybe Dr M could check the museums in his area to see if they would be interested in showing them temporarily? Maybe if they are having an exhibit that they would fit into?
cool items..i'm impressed
That's a cool office. Also lol at thinking a random plumber would be interested in the statue

I was at a loss for where it could have been! Plus, they were kinda poking around the garage and asking me questions about some of the stuff I have in there. Was probably just curiosity as I have a couple of unusual things but combine that with the missing statue and my mind started thinking they were up to no good. I work with criminals so I have a hard time trusting people as it is.
