The Neil deGrasse Tyson being Neil deGrasse Tyson thread

I love the way he says "GZA" when he introduces the hip hop master of the Wu-Tang Clan, er, WU-TANG CLAAAN at 4:12. Shortly after GZA starts rhyming about nature at 7:08, Neil looks like he's about to gz himself.

Staying with the hip hop theme, Neil appeared on the Jim and Sam Show alongside Violent J of Insane Clown Posse. During the interview, he does this thing where he keeps grabbing Sam's hand/arm. I timestamped the first one at 8:01 where he pushes it away, but if you continue watching, at 15:57, he takes Sam by the wrist and pulls him in, and at 18:58 he again asserts his dominance.

Ten minutes into this video, at the beginning of the Q & A section, he corrects a girl for opening her question with the word "um." The following moments go as expected, but can you blame him? I mean, he is an educator.

He doesn't have a case for his phone. I listened to his explanation, and still think his reasoning is dumb. Murphy's Law: **** will happen. Everyone has dropped their phone at some point. Which means he will.

I don't have a case for my phone. Never dropped it. Of course it's only in my hand about 1% as much as some people.

I have apple care that expires in march, so when I discovered a small crack even with a case I decided to go caseless to see how I like it. That was probably 6 months ago. I now have cracks on the back, cracks on the front, multiple dings on the metal edging. I have scientifically proven that I need to use a case even though it looks so much better without one. I drop my phone a lot without a case, it's much more slippery.

I believe my response to the Lecture on Um would have been "**** You".

NdT is an Anachronism of Scientific thought... he's a joke..

Sounds like you need a lanyard and put it around your neck.

If he would just stick to talking about astrophysics then he'd be semi tolerable. It's when his narcissism takes over and he starts running his mouth about other stuff that shows he's a 1 trick pony.

There's a lot I like about him. The guy's a huge nerd. He's a great teacher; enthusiastic, passionate and has funny mannerisms, but sometimes he's a bit much.

i do appreciate the fact that he is very open about being a total nobody in his field and that his specialty is that most astrophysicists have neither the desire nor the capability to pause their actual important work to give a dumbed down explanation to a bunch of randos but that's something that he both enjoys and is pretty good at doing

i think the real way to judge him is to judge him by his contemporaries who also try to do this kind of work and he's head and shoulders better than him

the most prominent i can think of is michio kaku and i find him so annoying

like he engages in content like this, just gross

the rest of his stuff is so campy it belongs in the og batman series

Sean Carroll is pretty good.

Michio always seems to be speaking in but-what-ifs. "But what if I told you that one day we will be able to travel to the outermost regions of the universe just as if we were driving across town? There is a possibility that your grandchildren will go to school, not in another town, but in another galaxy. When I tell people this, they are dumbfounded. 'But Michio? How is that possible?' Well, Einstein was a genius and invented something called a wormhole..."

nailed it perfectly 😀

He's a popular science communicator, so we should hold him to the standard of being a popular science communicator and that's about it

I'm a Sabine fan. It seems like she is pretty well accomplished at being a physicist and I like her tendency to skepticism, while still being pretty open minded.

I'm pretty weak in math/science, but went to grad school and published in philosophy and a lot of what she says about academia rings true. I never thought until recently that these problems were as prevalent in science, but comments both on her videos and videos that are critical of her (a couple of click bait vids from amateurs succeeded in getting my clicks, as I always want to see criticism of people I'm listening to) pour in from people in academia saying she is right.

She goes outside her lane sometimes and does pretty well. I guess academic fads all follow similar patterns.

She's weakest when she gets into politics, imo, but otherwise is a fairly effective science communicator that does a job of going against the grain where she judges it correct to. Without people like her we'd have a lot less open-mindedness in science.

He's no Carl Sagan but anybody out there trying to make people less dumb and to think critically is ok by me.

I'm not familiar with her but just searched her name on YouTube. Some of the first results were a "Professor Dave Explains" takedowns. I'm guessing I'll like her.
