From Rec to Pro, Starting at 2nl

Hey 2p2,

Starting a thread to keep myself on track and hopefully also get advice from more experienced poker players.

I'm mid-30s, started playing casually in college, and have played a few hundred hours combined live and online, a mix of cash and MTTs. I was slightly ahead (0.5bb/100 before RB) on ACR 10nl Blitz over 20k hands a few years ago and that's probably the strongest I've ever been at poker. Recently only played a few live MTTs and 1/2, 1/3. I'm up about $2k over 100 hours in the past year. I'll be starting at 2nl because I want to prove to myself with a high degree of confidence that I'm a winning player and understand the game well before moving up in stakes. The amount of money I can win at low stakes is not significant to me, so the online play is really a training ground for me, so that I can get good stats and improve my play.

Current plan:

  • Study 1 hour per day
  • Play 1-3 hours per day depending on available time
  • Move up in stakes once I've beaten current stakes for at least 5bb/100 over 10k+ hands

My medium-term goal is to progress up to 25nl blitz on ACR and be able to beat that. I'll be playing reg tables up until 25nl then switch over to 25nl blitz (or should I try 50nl reg first? I don't know which is harder). Once I'm beating that at a good clip I want to take some shots at medium stakes live (maybe put in some hours at 2/5 or maybe jump straight to 5/10, of course I'm open to advice re: this). I am planning to play a close to GTO style, maybe with some over-folding at low stakes since in my experience this is highly profitable.

I'll be planning to post here at least once a week with an updated graph from PT4, some stats, and with some hands or questions from my study.

Plan for this week's study:

  • Review RFI and 3b ranges by position
  • Review BB defense vs BTN, CO Open
  • Review C-bet strategy and C-bet defense on a few types of boards

Feel free to critique or ask any questions!
