On the way out; HUPLO vs !!! and other Shenanigans (An update and accountability thread)

Shalom,

I am creating this thread to document my likely departure from poker/gambling, a career I embarked on back in 2017. The main stuff I'll be posting about is an ongoing huplo match vs an epic whale thats one of the best situations I've finagled myself into. I dont really play a whole lot of poker outside of this match at this point, and its up in the air how long my opponent will want to play for. I'll also be occasionally posting updates from other gambling/poker as they come along.

**If youd like to skip the back story about me go down to the **. Its probably pertinent info for ppl who really want to engage with the thread, but if thats not you and you just want the pokers I get it**
Who am I?:
I'd like to preface this with on paper my situation is objectively pretty good, but the reality of the situation is much different. I have effectively wasted years of my life pursuing something I now for sure recognize as a bit of a lost cause, for me at least. I do not have the self control or discipline needed to be a professional gambler. I think way above skill/balls that brm and positive healthy decision making is infinitely more important in the equation of who can make it as a gambler. So this thread is taking place while I am on my way out of gambling and back into business. I felt it was necessary to say this up front.

I've had some violent swings in my time since taking poker on full time. I played growing up and quite a bit in high school, both online and live, and then black friday happened my first year at college. I had some money locked up, but at that point I was already consumed in a business I started. The business ended up going way better than ever expected and put me thru school and was eventually bought out by a competitor in late 2016. At this point I had no clue what to do and decided I'd see if I could make it in poker.

I had a ton of learning I needed to do, but I also already effectively had a bankroll which was not the best combo at the time. For solid year or two I was firing my dick off as a very bad reg. Online and live. Lost a lot. Eventually I went to the basics and built a roll up properly and got coaching etc, and I think honestly still to this day I am able to benefit from ppls hh's with me being what they were. However I still have a bad habit of always pushing the limits of my roll and this has led to a lot won and a lot lost. Because of this diversifying my income streams and assets(and obviously the funds from the acquisition) is the only reason I haven't had to figure out another path already. However I know I am going to need to soon and already have my pitch deck complete for the next business I'm going to be pursuing.

But back to this (potentially) boring summary of me. The other income streams have been clutch over the years. During covid it was running games and being an agent that really propelled me along. Money was insane for awhile. I also did some affiliate marketing and dropshipping(my original business was in ecommerce at a time ecommerce hadn't become a fad yet) that at this point have really puckered out. I have also been fortunate to land myself in some super sick spots with sports betting "deals" and various schemes I guess you'd call it. Nothing scummy to other ppl or illegal rly. I also own my home outright that I bought right before covid as I had a lump sum of cash on hand that paid about 80% of my home cost, and then I have since paid off my mortgage for the difference. So I have also always looked at this as another "bullet" if **** really hits the fan. Before I started poker I put most of the money from the business into a portfolio that I'm able to cover my fixed costs from the interest. I am also unmarried w no dependents.

****

The heads up match:
My opponent is a childhood friend of a guy I did some business with back in covid running games which is where we met. He was the whale of the lobby and is probably the most successful person I know in the business world. We hit it off because with my play style I was always the one willing to gamble and give him action, and I'm willing to not have the best of it which I'm sure most of you reading this are not. We started playing over a year ago but it was pretty sporadic until this winter when we started playing nearly daily. He gg'd in late spring but we've since resumed. So I am constantly feeling like I'm having to balance playing him and also maintaining his interest in continuing to play. This means being available when he wants to play. Not really quitting until he wants to or creating firm sesh times.

We play on a private lobby on kingsclub where we once had a game going. We have it so we're practically paying no rake which is great. We can fire hard all week and pay maybe $100 cumulative in rake. The table is a 1/2 $600 (auto top) that we play at a multiplier. The table is what it is we could probably change it but dont want to bother the ppl who run it I guess. Right now were playing at a 2x multiple, but weve played up to 5x. The rules are button must open every hand, and bb must at least call. This really drives action. Last nights session we had the chance to play a 80k usd pot had we gotten it in. Oh and hes a stickler for running it only once.

In the replies I'll post the results to date. We track it him and I via a telegram accounting bot where the weekly results and settling $ btwn us gets input, then I also track the results privately in a spreadsheet where the rest of my gambling tracking goes. For HH's it will just be screenshots of the table since hands cant be put into a tracker.

If you have any questions I'm pretty transparent and open to answering. If you know who I am irl ideally keep that to yourself. Definitely dont want this getting back to my opponent but 99.9% sure he has no clue what 2+2 is and we only have one mutual.

As you can see I got off to a bit of a slow start as his play style is pretty non standard. I then took a substantial lead in the winter/spring but recently he has won some back. Thru the settling period this past monday I am up $156k with this week going well.

Thought Id start out with two interesting pots from our most recent sesh, one I won and one I didnt. These hands should start to give you an idea for the type of opponent he is and how clicky he is. I welcome all strat talk and suggestions, Im sure many of you are better than me. But please also keep in mind there is a lot of meta with hu matches especially vs non standard opponents. However definitely will hear you out and will try to respond in a way that is constructive and not dismissive.

Lets start with the hand I lost for funsies

This was a $11.6k irl pot. (were playing 2x multiplier of chips in game). The sizings I use vs him are not what Id use vs others as "pot" he rarely calls. So when I have value I have to size down and so have to with my bluffs too.

In this hand I 3b AKTh4h in bb and he 4b and we call. What kind of hands would you think hed be 4b here? 😉
On the flop I decided to donk with top two and also the Ad blocker.
Ott the flush comes but also gives me a full mirror. I x, he bets like 60% and I x/r a bit less than pot with 3pr + Ad. I expect him to mainly have smaller flushes and maybe QJT.
Otr is a brick I bet 80% and he calls with 4th nf. This call made me actually laugh out loud bc he is such a nit sometimes on rivers but then randomly gets stubborn or just made a good read. I have had many hands where I x/r turn and blast river and hes called and Ive had it , so was surprised to see his hand.

This is a $8.6k pot that I won but probably made an error ott

Like the last hand I 3b bb w KQT5ds and he 4b btn to 80 and we see flop
otf I x/c his pot size pot. I have top 2 and bdfd, I could raise but call fine here at this spr imo
ott I x/c his pot size pot when I turn a clean flush draw. I think I should have just ripped it tbh, it would have been for most of his stack and wed prolly just gii. But Im saying this now that I can see his hand. In game Im thinking he could be clicking it with a very shitty hand that I want to keep in given I have so much of the board. He could have nut hearts and would call and some wraps(I do have a Q tho), but often times he will have Ah a pair and gutter or with the turn creating low wraps he could have all sorts of combos that wouldnt call a raise that I want him to bluff river
otr I end up just x/c and not jamming in for his last 835($1670) bc it didnt really seem like he could call with worst. He has one of the few hands that might have called riv, but def a hand that would have called turn jam

Hope these are two okay starting hands for this thread. Now that Im doing this Ill try to tag hands as I go to pick out maybe more interesting ones with better decision points.

Let me know if this style of HH is legible and able to track. I am covering the username and table names bc ppl at kcp could theoretically look up the usernames or table names and find specifics so figured Id block it with the red box. dont know how long ill keep doing that for tho

The top image when I input it was input the same way as the 2nd hand as simply an imgur link. For some reason it input the image into the thread tho and not just the link. I'd prefer if they all did this, any clue why that happened for one and not the other?

Should I be doing this a different way ?
