NL5 (100$) to NL50 (2000$) Bankroll Challenge

NL5 (100$) to NL50 (2000$) Bankroll Challenge

Hey guys!

I have a bankroll challenge running over at pokerstrategy.de and realised you guys do that here as well! So i figured to share my progress with you guys as well 😀

Quick keyfacts: I played poker last properly in 2008, did some NL10 over christmas and got my ass kicked in a 50 stack downswing. Now I am in the progress of learning the "new" GTO preflop charts as well as updating my betsizes. Still lots of mistakes for sure, feel free to point them out here!

Current Limit: NL5
Current Bankroll: 170$ (from 100$ challenge start on january 5th)

Goal Limit: NL50
Goal Bankroll: 2000$

Quick question for you guys on tracking software. GGpoker does not allow HUD, so I only need something to display stats and graphs including rake. HM3 and PT4 are the obvious ones, now I am in the Hand2Note trial ending tomorrow. I prefer the way their graph looks as they have a dark mode (why do the other two not offer that?!), but it cost 49$ a month which is 10 stacks on NL5 whereas the others are 60$ lifetime. Maybe you have any other software that works with GG and is in the price range of HM/PT?

And from my next session tomorrow I will post some example hands here as well. Since I am also streaming every now and then, I might also post a VOD. So far I only had one proper stream a few days ago, if you want to have a look at my current level, feel free to

.

Cheers,
Chris

Coming

for a two hour session on NL5 😀 Feel free to pop by!

Well, I always used HM and am still happy with it, but PT will probably work just fine, so my suggestion is try both and pick the one you like the most 😀

Not sure if I got what you mean by 50 stack downswing, did you lose 50 buy-ins at 10nl?

Big fan of your travel posts, blog and vlogs, for many years.

Thanks! yes was 100$ up on NL10 , then down to 400$ down from there

I will probably get PT then once i get back to NL10, at NL5 i dont feel like investing 65$ for it

Here are two example hands for you to analyse for NL5

1) did I play the TPTK too scared on the river?
2) did I overplay the Queens?

1) No
2) Yes

Thanks, what about these hands? Trying to adapt, not sure if I get too careful though in Hand 2, Hand 1 trying to keep pot low on the turn but cant get myself to fold on the river

H1: Not that I think your flop cbetting sizing in all those hands is your biggest leak, but cbetting this big multiway after squeezing preflop, I think it is a mistake. Even considering MP might be a fish. As played, turn and river seems fine to me.

H2: I think we have to call turn here. To fold river if they bet, but they will play face up by the river in my opinion, so you won't face a difficult decision anyway.

Thanks! Regarding bet sizes, so remember i played last in 2008. Back then you bet more in general i believe, i was told to bet 1/3 if i dont bet for value or protection, in this case the draws are out and I bet 2/3 for protection. Is that betting for protection against draws not a thing anymore?

Picking one single reason and basing an strategy on that is never a good thing. This is just not possible, poker can't be simplified like that. For example, there are boards like AK4tt where BTN vs BB SRP, BTN cbet sizing will usually be an overbet. But here we also have the nut advantage (we have the monopoly on AA, KK and AK, and even though BB has 44, A4, we have them also 100% of the time), and getting value now before the board complicates maximizes the EV of our entire range it seems. But it is not really protection, is it? The nuts change if the board complicates, but so we got more money while we were ahead etc etc. And if the board runs clean, we play for stacks. Which would be harder using small sizings.

I would suggest that you find some training site, or coach, where you can get the basic fundamentals right, while you're playing the cheapest stakes. I don't know how good runitonce is nowadays, it was good a few years ago, especially if you knew what you were looking for (video libraries like they have are a bit too disorganized for my tastes, but nothing that we can't solve if we know what we want beforehand 😀 ).

Hey there, I actually have to adept a bit trying to follow more of a standard approach back from my old flexible approach.

I am getting kinda couched over at pokerstrategy. I do not think that I am on a level where I have no basic fundamentals, but I have a lot to refresh on and learn again after the 15 years. So that will just take some time.

Today I was

and giving my thoughts to all hands, probably you will not have time to look at all of them, but feel free to peak in for a few minutes to see if its really that bad.

But yep in general its not working well for me, had another loss day in my challenge. So i am certainly not a good player, but I think I am also not on the lowest level possible (not knowing basics pretty much)

Hey man, I definitely will look at your streams as soon as I can, and I will give my opinion. It's just that when you mentioned the 50 BI downswing (which by the way may happen, but given the other datapoints, may still be that you're playing suboptimal, I think you would benefit from some upgrades on how you approach the basic stuff). So yeah, as soon as I can I will look at it.

If you are going to take it seriously you should quit streaming and get good at poker.

Most streamers are not good winning players and it's too hard to focus on game and chat.

Yes i know, but cuirrently streaming on NL5 helps because i can provide the sessions to the coaches and they can give me some good feedback so i can improve. I also only stream around 5-10% of my poker time. I think its a good mix of getting feedback, trying the best to put that feedback into my game and then also have a little community that can follow the bankroll challenge 😀

As long as the main reason is to get feedback, I don't see how streaming wouldn't be higher EV than relying only on coaching and posting hands. You'd be surprised how relevant to our winrates are all those non-important small pots that we don't pay attention to (but that show up in a full stream).

Yes thats exactly why I think its nice to put in some streams every now and then, so people can point out smaller pots that I lose (without maybe paying too much attention to it) that I would otherwise not post as example hands. If that makes sense 😀 But streaming for sure is -EV hehe. I will only do it very rarely as I said.
