Averaging 28 BB/hr my first 60 hours back at $1-$2
Posting it here in the hopes of getting plenty of “omg you r-tard you’re just going through a hot stretch” replies.
Lost my job a month ago and decided to spend my new free time at the local casino. Biggest Hold’em game is $1-$2 with $2-$100 spread limit (the most you can raise is $100 more than the previous bet).
And….I’ve played for 61 hours and am up $3450 so far. And YES $840 of that is running over my All-In-EV, but, still. My last job was a fake email job, I didn’t earn close to this much.
It’s not speeding up my job search, is what I’m saying.
BRRRRRRAKING NEWS:
I have a round 2 interview for a job back in the mortgage industry next week. I am extremely confident that I’m gonna get the job, meaning my poker career will finally be over.
I’ve been in a downswing for the last two months, and my overall win rate (over 560 hours) is down to 20.5 BBs/hour.
congrats on the job, sorry you got the job
I did NOT get the job.
And also…my poker career is over again. The downswing wiped out my $2,000 bankroll—I lost my last $300 of it today.
Final stats—including the downswing that ended it.
It’s funny that my win rate in both stints—July-December 2022 and then July-December 2023–were almost the exact same, 20 BBs an hour.
But…oh well. Now I continue applying for work in a desperate attempt to get a full-time job again. Part-time at the Doggy Day Care is not gonna cut it.
That sucks man. Your bankroll was $2,000? How much was your buy in? That is unfortunate since you seem to have a pretty good win rate. We can talk a out bankroll managent all day, but at the end of the day, you have to be in a pretty fortunate position to have the bankroll to play poker. Hard or impossible when your expenses require you to take from your bankroll each month.

I would buy in for $300 each time, the max.
Yeah, at the start of my adventure back in July I had taken out $3,000 in cash, stuffed it in my sock drawer, and that was my “bankroll.” Every Friday I would take my profits and put them in our checking account. But after a few break-even weeks in October I just moved $1,000 of my “bankroll” into our checking account, so my “bankroll” was down to $2,000.
And then over the last month, well…. This happened, lol [Uploading Image...]
Bro, less than 7 buy ins and you were destined for failure. Not sure if your financial situation allowed for it, but the play would be to grow your bankroll until it was sustainable. Even if you deposit some of it in the bank.
Whoops that didn’t work.
unlucky my man. Focus on the job and you'll make it back in due time
UPDATE: So I got a job back in the mortgage industry last month, and since then I’ve started going back to poker—just playing “for fun” one or two nights a week. I’m paying my bills with the office job—whatever I make in poker is just fun money now.
So due to this, I have recently crossed a new milestone: 600 hours at $1-$2 ($2-$100 spread-limit).
Here’s a link to my stats, including the sessions I’ve played since starting the job (I’m sun-running again). Back up to 20 BBs an hour!
UPDATE:
**** I got fired! I’ve applied for a whole series of **** jobs cuz I do NOT want another long stretch of unemployment, but, there’s still gonna be a gap, and of course I’m gonna have to fill that gap with ****ING $1-$2.
Legit beat. :( GL!
If you're making 40/hr at poker just stick with that for now and find a sales job you can do from home - mortgage broker, real estate agent, etc. Doesn't sound like your job prospects are anything too worthwhile, and maybe you can grow that poker winrate into 80/hr or more one day at higher stakes.
There are no higher stakes and his EV at 1/2 is definitely not $40/hr no matter how hot his AV has been.
Even with that ridiculous hot streak OP has still managed to go broke twice because he doesn't keep a sufficient bankroll.

To be clear, I only went broke once. The first time I quit is was simple burnout.
IN OTHER NEWS I was able to speed-run my way into a new job, one that—impossibly—starts on Monday. This is especially welcome news for me because I never told my wife I lost my job.

GZ!
Did job one give severance? Might end up coming out ahead.
Won the absolute stupidest hand of my life last night:
Two limps, MP raises to 16, a call, I 3-bet to 50 w Kd4c in SB, straddle and limper and opener all call. Flop Ac8h2h. I bet 75, a fold, Guy raises to 175 and has 20 behind. Opener folds. I put him all-in and he calls. Turn 4x River 2x. He says “you’re good” and tables 65hh

3-bet AQ to 18 after a $4 UTG open. 3 callers. Flop QJ4r. X UTG bets 20 a call I raise to 85 only UTG calls. Turn Kx. He x I bet 100 he goes all-in I call my last 70. He has T9. River T! I win!
CO opens to $5 after a couple limps, Button 3-bets to $45 (!). I have AA in the BB and just call. CO calls too. Flop A77. I check, CO checks, Button checks. Turn J. I check, CO checks, Button checks. River 2. I check, CO checks, Button checks. My full house is good, surprisingly.
Just some stellar, high-level play from me, all around.
I find when I got to a new casino, I play great. Then they learn my tricks and it's time to move on.
UPDATE: just had the most insane session of my life, have never hit harder, in for $300 out 5 and a half hours later with $1,626. Flopped 4 sets and hit a straight flush. Got paid on just about EVERYTHING. Just ridiculous.
RIP OP. :(
