Goal: Beat 2/5 Live for $50/hr in Addition to my Career

I am doing a pretty basic blog here where my goal is to have an hourly win rate of $50 or more from live poker (2/5). I have an engineering career where the pay is not bad and I find it fulfilling so I'm not looking to quit for poker.

I live in British Columbia, Canada, and I’m in my mid mid twenties. Currently living with my parents :/.

I’ve always loved this game, although I'm not particularly good. I find that my biggest strength is to be disciplined and be able to play tightly for long periods of time. IÂ’m kind of going to be relying on this to beat 2/5. Table selection isn’t much of an option for 2/5 for me as there’s only like two tables at a time. I’m going to be playing like 6 to 7 hours a week live on average for now, which would add over 10 grand a year to my net income as it’s cash and untaxed. I would play more but I work a decent amount of hours at my career so I think I should keep a reasonable balanced schedule where I can still exercise and get sleep etc.

For training, I will be playing online cash (mainly FR) on stars as well as watching videos of online cash play and explains, maybe a bit of GtO content but nothing too crazy. IÂ’m currently a winner at 10NL and partly moving up to 16NL. I only play online so I can improve, all of my actual money will be from live, there's just no comparison for me imo.

I will be posting my results here and maybe online hands and live hands, asking for peoples thoughts (if they even care that is). It’s mainly for myself but if people find it remotely interesting or helpful/motivating then that’s really great!! I’ve actually played for 45 hours so far of live with a current WR of $70/hr (meaninglessly small sample and inflated WR I know) so I will post a bit of that backlog.

Thanks guys

I’ve been busy with work and travelling but getting back into poker. I went to Thailand for all of December! On a bit of a downswing. I’ve been playing some live PLO now too I watched a few YouTube videos on the rules.

The Vancouver PLO scene is usually 1/2 bring in 5 and it straddles sometimes. However they’ve introduced 5/10 PLO a few weeks ago which I haven’t played yet. PLO is less stressful because I’m not buying in so deep like Texas holdem. (500 vs 1500). You can still make a solid hourly from short stacking it unlike Holdem.

So, currently I’m doing like a short stack PLO style and a 300bb 2/5 Holdem style, gonna keep trying that for awhile. My confidence with poker is quite low right now for some reason I def need to study more and watch more YouTube videos on how to play the game.

on a bit of an upswing not too much to say. I’m gonna try to play a minimum of 10 hours a week. But it’s hard in addition to the work. It would be nice to be playing 5/10 full time but sometimes 2/5 seems juicy and the variance is half the amount so I’m always like why not just stay at this table and be comfortable. I should shot take more because it’s pretty whaley

Fat downswing. I’ve lost 13 sessions in a row. It’s **** timing because I’m moving out in a month and I’m getting low for cash flow. I want to be able to be bankrolled for 2/5 deep stack properly at all times so I can rely on it for side income when I’ve moved out.

I’ve mixed in some 1/3 and 2/3 to lower the variance. Gonna keep that going and re evaluate once I’m officially under rolled for 2/5.

I’m adjusting to this downswing by playing even tighter than normal and also a less variance style, which may be less hourly overal but **** it.

It’s not even like a crazy downswing, but the timing for personal reasons is quite awkward which makes the downswing feel a lot worse than it is mentally.

I’m also dealing with providing interventions to my dad for alcoholism which is stressful.

An update for my negative number of readers

I haven’t really been playing for 4 months. Money was tight and I don’t have enough to comfortably play 2/5. Not gonna bother with 1/3. My graph is still basically the same as above, which is misleading on my actual spare money life roll. Living in Vancouver is expensive af and a lot of my income from my career goes to my apartment.

So I’m using this time to study for LSAT (law school admission test). It was a goal in the back or my mind even while studying engineering. Engineering has been borinn to me too lately, idk I’m working with people who act regarded half the time and it’s super un motivating and makes my job way harder than it needs to be. Idk if law would be much different but at least everyone’s first language would be the same as mine lmao. I’m hoping to get into engineering law or ip law.

I’ve studied for over two months, I want to study at least 8. My gpa is bad compared to most law applicants (2.95) so I need a very high lsat score.

It’s draining af to study in addition to my full time job. I feel like my head is just buried behind a laptop or book 24/7.

Poker dream isn’t necessarily dead. A part of me is fantasizing about quitting engineering early to allow way more studying, and then I would be play poker part time while studying. That might be regarded tho
