Rock 'n' Roll Poker Open
Day Four - Friday November 22nd

Woke early enough to get my swim in but the pool was positively icy today. It was only 60 out and blowing a cold breeze so I should have known, but I manned up and did my lengths before escaping for a hot shower.

Random photo from the walk in.

Omaha 8 today. I arrived 10 minutes late but could have easily left it until the first break. Passive table and not much happening for the first 4 levels. Of the mix games O8 I think is probably the least volatile so it’s hard to win or lose a lot early.

We picked up momentum in the 2nd and 3rd sessions and went on dinner break at the end of level 12 with a stack of 108,000 with 27 players remaining.

I’d eaten Salmon from the food court on one of the earlier breaks so went to get my first ice cream of the trip and had a walk outside.

I steadily increased my stack to 150,000 when we did the re-draw at 18 for the last two tables.

At 8k-16k I play the following hand against an aggressive player who had been opening a lot.
He raised from the hijack and I 3-bet from the button with KK45. He called, heads up.
Flop: 2-J-J
He checked, I bet, he called.
Turn: T
He checked, I bet, he folded.
Big blind says he folded a Jack. That’s why we 3 bet [emoji3]

Similar situation a few hands later.
I 3-bet again, this time with a better hand: AKK5
This time the same big blind who said he had the Jack in the previous hand isn’t folding and calls, as does the original raiser
Flop is good: K-J-7r
I bet, two callers.
Turn: 4h
I bet, two callers. Original raiser is all-in.
River: 9h bringing three hearts on board.
Big blind leads out.
I think there’s zero chance he’s bluffing here and insta-muck top set.
Sure enough he has the nut flush to scoop a huge pot and I’m down to 120,000 instead of 250,000 [emoji30]

We reach the final table soon after. My 120,000 is short with the average at 191,000

A massage girl walks past and as I’ve been feeling a bit tight, particularly in my right shoulder I put her to work for 20 minutes. I Immediately get half of a 3-way pot and ¾ of a heads up one on back to back hands and now everyone wants a massage.
"She isn't leaving until I lose a hand" I say.

This is the 2nd hand.

On the break at the end of level 20 I have 200,000 with 6 players left, which is still below the average of 290,000

Down to 4 handed and I’m the clear short stack. The 1 seat is ultra aggressive, raising every hand. I’m trying just to pick my spots to stay alive. In the end he’s probably too aggressive and it costs him as the bald headed guy beats him in a couple of pots and knocks him out.

At 3 handed playing 30k-60k the bald guy raises from the button and I 3-bet from the big blind with A236.
Flop: 6-10-J
I bet, he calls.
Turn: 9 Horrible card for me, but to check would be an open invitation for him to take the pot.
I bet, he raises.
I only have 30,000 left. Obviously I’m behind. Maybe I have outs to a 6 or Ace or maybe I’m drawing dead.
I elect to save the 30,000 which is exactly 1 big blind / half a big bet.

Somehow I manage to play russian roulette with my half a big bet and spin it up to 200,000 again.

Now playing 40k-80k and the bald guy raises my big blind again from the button.
I defend with AKJ9. All same suit but beggars can’t be choosers at this stage.
Flop: J-9-7 I flop top two.
I bet, he calls
Turn: 7
I bet all in for 75,000, almost a full bet.
He calls.
I’m ahead but he has a wrap.
One safe card away from a double up to 400,000 and being right back in this thing.
River: K
He makes a straight and we finish in 3rd place.

Not much more I can do. Fought hard until the end and very happy with the way I played. Just have to keep putting myself in these positions and the win will come.

Pleased to have got this cash now as I don’t plan on playing over the weekend.
All work and no play etc.

Don’t get discouraged to keep getting so close but not winning.

You’re playing great, your decisions, thought processes, and reads are sound.

If you keep making final tables every other day, it will work out and you’ll break through eventually.

Very nice - well done

Nice hit in the O8. Always a relief to get a good result early in a trip.

Day Five - Saturday November 23rd

A planned rest day, well, not so much rest, just no poker.

First up a trip to Hard Rock Stadium to see the Hurricanes. The visitors were Wake Forest.
Of course I had to have some action on the game [emoji3]

Have watched a few Hurricanes games on TV this season and I think they’re over-rated. 24 points is a lot to lay. Give me the dog. Also the Total of 69 looks high as I expect Wake Forest to try and run the ball. I’ll take the Under too.

Now I know why tickets on the visitors side were cheaper. You get to bake in the sun all day [emoji30][emoji3508]

We were looking good to win both bets but Wake Forest fail to convert a 4th and 1 and Miami drive down for a garbage time TD to cover the spread [emoji30] We win the Under though to split the bets and just lose the juice.

One gripe I had was that people were constantly getting up from their seats to go to the concession stands. I mean when there were plays going on. Isn’t there enough time outs that they can go then? Like just walking up the stairs with their back to the field when plays were going on. I don’t understand. Why come to the game if you don’t want to watch the plays?

Anyway, back to the hotel for a shower and change before heading to the casino for what I thought would be a nice dinner before the show.

Seems everyone else had the same idea. The casino was a zoo and all the restaurants were full with wait lists, even for seats at the bar.

I ended up eating at the food court before seeing the piano man himself [emoji446]

I saw him once before in Vegas a few years ago. It was a good show then and it’s still just as good today. Really enjoyed it. The venue was first class as well. I was on the 2nd level balcony but still had a great view.

Another gripe I had though, (What’s bothering you today Tony?) was that both venues were cashless. Hate to see that. Banks the only winners there.

But all in all just what the doctor ordered. A relaxing day away from the tables.

Day Six - Sunday November 24th

Back to Hard Rock Stadium. If yesterday was the appetizer, then today is the main course. The Dolphins are 7 point favorites over the Patriots and I’m happy to say it qualified as a bet for me so I can cheer on the home team. Dolphins -7, -120. Also had them in teasers with the Lions and Texans.

Splashed out on club level today but still on the wrong side of the field. Shade not included unfortunately. Food options no different either, you just get a nice lounge to sit and enjoy them in. Slightly comfier seats and better view but not really that much difference.
After getting baked in the sun for two days straight I have a little empathy for the thousands of turkeys that will be going in the oven on Thursday.

The Patriots had the first chance to put points on the board but doinked a field goal attempt off the upright and from then on it was all Dolphins. Covering the spread was never in doubt as they ran out 34-15 winners.

After the game I headed to the casino to watch and bet the late games. There is actually a park and ride to the stadium across the street from the casino so I took advantage of the ride part which was handy.

In the afternoon slate I bet the Packers -6 online but wanted to see how the other games started before committing.
When I got to the sportsbook both the Broncos and Seahawks were losing. I had leaned those sides pre-match so took advantage to get on them live at better numbers on the moneyline.
(Seahawks number actually wasn’t better but they had the ball at midfield only down 3)

All 3 favorites won and covered the late games resulting in a line to collect.

The book probably still won on the day as they would have cleaned up with the Commanders and Texans both losing outright.

After that I was tired and took an Uber back to the hotel to watch SNF in my room.

Tomorrow it’s back to the felt with Triple Stud at 11am. I’m guessing it will be a low turnout as Stud is not as popular as other variants, but I like the format and am looking forward to playing it.

Day Seven - Monday November 25th

We will now return to our regular scheduled programming.

Triple Stud today (Razz, Stud, Stud 8) and as expected a small field of only 48 entries.
We had our 25k starting stack up to 50k at the end of late reg but didn’t win a hand after that.

We busted in time to late reg the $600 Big O (101 entries) but wished we hadn’t after taking a pretty sick beat.

Both tournaments were taking place in the smaller meeting room and some degens were multi-tabling in both with a combined last longer. I wasn’t among them, but that’s not to say I’m not degen enough to consider it.

Anyway, back to my beat.

All the money went in on the flop.
Top set of Aces for me, middle set of Tens for villain.
I turned a straight and nut flush draw.
The river was most unkind. A gutshot queen to give villain broadway and the pot.

After that I concluded it wasn’t to be my day at poker and went off to bet MNF.

We just had time to have dinner before the game started.

Tagliatelle Bolognese at Cipresso, the Italian place.

Followed by Tiramisu

A 2-unit bet on the game for me tonight:
Better coach
Better QB
Better RB
Better Defence
Give me the Ravens

Ravens started slow but changed the momentum of the game by converting a 4th and 1 from their own 16 yard line (John Harbaugh would be a good poker degen [emoji23])and won easily enough in the end.

Who are the top 3 coaches in the NFL right now?

Andy Reid pretty clearly has to be number 1. Then you could make arguments for a few guys,

But I’ve always said if you don’t have John Harbaugh in the top 3 somewhere, then you’re wrong.

Dude has a ring and been very good for some time now.

Agree with the two you mention. I’d probably have Dan Campbell, Matt Lefleur and maybe Nick Sirianni rounding out the top 5 in no particular order.

Day Eight - Tuesday November 26th

Got in my morning swim but it may be the last one of the trip. The water seems to be getting colder each day and I don’t much feel like swimming in an ice bath.

2-7 Triple draw today and again a small field. Only 48 entries.

I start well enough increasing to 36k at the first break.
Run good continues into the 2nd session.
Get dealt 34579 and stay pat against two callers drawing on every street and I’m good.
I also pick off a bluff with a pair of threes which were good against a pair of fours [emoji23]
74k on 2nd break and end of late reg.

The field might have been small but it was pretty stacked including 2015 main even champ Joe McKeehen who came to my table after firing a 2nd bullet max late reg.

He’d lost a couple of pots and then I played a hand against him.

I made an 8-7 on the first change and re-raised him which he called.

At this point he didn’t have many chips left. I couldn’t see clearly as I was at one end of the table and he was at the other so I asked him how much he had left and he just sat there in silence.
I asked him again as I just assumed he hadn’t heard me. Still complete silence. Okay whatever.

I bet out after standing pat on the second change which he called to set him all in.
He made an 8-6 last change to beat me and after says he’s not obligated to tell me how much he has.

Okay, he’s also not obligated to be a dick either.
It’s limit poker. It’s not like I’m trying to get a tell by trying to make him talk.

No big deal but just seemed very douchy, especially for a main event champ who should be an ambassador for the game and trying to make the experience of playing as enjoyable as possible for everyone. Well that’s the way I see it anyway.

Shortly after I got moved to a different table where I found David Shmuel to my left who was running god like and just hitting everything.
I had some awesome 1 card draws against him but I missed and he hit ……. every time.

Down to 46k at dinner break with 11 left.

David continued to be my nemesis after dinner when he hit a 7-6 to my 8-6 to eliminate me in 10th place, 4 short of the money.

So that marked the half-way point of my tournament schedule. 6 played with just 1 cash so far. Hopefully we can find at least one more cash in the remaining 5 tournaments.

Sports betting was also unkind to me today. Bet Tulsa pk live down 7. They came back to tie it 14-14 and were driving for the win.
They elected to settle for a 29 yard field goal instead of trying to get a TD. (There was plenty of time left to go for a TD)
The kicker had already missed two FG’s and sure enough missed it again and they lost in OT.

Dumb coaches are the fcuking rake for sports bettors. [emoji30]

Tomlin in there maybe? Been pretty consistently good with whatever rosters he has been given.

The McKeehen story is very on-brand. I've never met him or played with him, but he has a reputation for being cold and prickly. Not the first I've heard of it.

I will say that I'm not a talker in hands myself and also never respond if someone asks me a question during a live hand.

I can at least relate to that behavior, though I've heard other stories of him being unnecessarily gruff.

Not a Tomlin fan. Can’t argue with his winning record but he’s another one that makes dumb in-game decisions for me. [emoji23]

I'm more of an Urban Meyer guy myself.

jokes aside, actually a little surprised by Sirianni in top 5, otherwise I agree 100%.

Great read, keep it up. Medellin is an amazing city

I know Philly fans love to **** on Sirianni but the dude has 50something wins and under 20 losses… he’s doing something right.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Poker Open
Day Nine - Wednesday November 27th

HORSE today which is probably my favorite tournament format.

We chip up slowly but surely:

Start: 25,000
End level 4: 28,000
End level 8: 42,000
End level 12: 66,000

To hit the dinner break bang on average with 23 players remaining.

And I don’t think we won a hand after dinner. We were eliminated in the hold’em round when we 3bet J-J from the BB which pretty much committed us to the pot no matter what the flop was.
Flop: A-K-7
We put our last bet in but know it’s in vain. Villain has A-J and we’re out in 14th.

Also had some soccer bets today but went 1-2

After we busted the tournament we went to check out the poker room. The pot limit Big O game hasn’t run except that one time.
(They are strangely running a 10-20 limit version but that’s too small to interest us)

So we sat down in a 10-10-25 (the 25 is the rock) PLO 5 must move game. We buy in for $1,500

In games of this size I prefer to buy-in on the shorter stack side, especially when I don’t know the other players. If you get some crazy aggressive players you can find yourself playing for stacks before you know it, which would get expensive at $5k a time.

Played one hand of note before I was
moved to the main table.
I called a small pre-flop raise with AQT98ds
Flop: Q-9-8 with two spades.
I have 3 pair and a ten high flush draw.
Pre flop raiser bets about half pot. I call. Heads up.
Turn: Jx
Villain bets about half pot.
Now we have a non-nut straight and still 3 pair and ten high flush draw.
We call
River: 3 of spades bringing the flush.
Villain bets about quarter pot.
Looks like a block bet to try and stop us betting bigger.
We call and are good with the ten high flush.

We get moved to the main table soon after, taking about a $2k stack with us.

Random pic from the Hard Rock to break up the text. An old car of Neil Diamond, or so the sign says.

The main table is pretty good. All Spanish speakers which doesn’t bother us. There’s 3 or 4 guys from Spain who clearly know each other but they look to be playing straight up, and a guy from Bolivia.

We’re sitting on about $1,800 when we get dealt AAT92ss.
Guy on my left makes it 150 and there’s two callers when it gets to us.
Bad aces. For sure not going to win multi-way. We need to try and thin the field out a bit.
We make it 750
The original raiser who’s sitting on about $5k wants to iso and re-pots it.
The others fold and we put it in.
He asks once or twice.
He’s from Spain.
“Sangre” we say, meaning blood, which is what we say in Medellin when we only want to go one time.
He smiles and understands.
The runout is: 8-7-6-5-2r
“Aces” we announce.
He shakes his head in disgust.
We turn them over and we’re good.
He didn’t show. Probably something like AKKQJ I’m guessing.

We win a couple of other pots and cash out $5,500 after 5 hours for a $4k profit.

Thanksgiving tomorrow so there’s no tournaments. There are 3 NFL games, but I don’t really have strong opinions on any of them.
Will either look for some live bets or maybe play cash again.

Day Ten - Thursday November 28th

Hello friends. Happy Thanksgiving! [emoji884]

Had my thanksgiving lunch in Rise while watching the start of the Detroit game.

Then relocated to the sports book where I’d stay for the next 10 hours.

Had Detroit -9.5 in the first game. [emoji777]
Looked like an easy winner but Chicago came back and made a game of it and should really have taken it at least to OT.

Over was the play in the Cowboys game [emoji736]

And Go Pack Go rounded off a winning day [emoji736]

Had various other bets throughout the day and ended up winning $1,500 overall in the sports book and some more in my offshore account.

Some observations from spending all day in the book:

- Lots of Dolphins fans betting with their hearts instead of their heads.
- People thought I was some sort of maths wizard because I was sat there with my computer.
- The drunk guys always want to strike up conversations with me. Mostly I just nod and agree.
- Averaged 1 drink per hour. 6 coronas and 4 black russians. That and a good tip for the waitress allowed me to keep a table all day.
- I stink of 2nd hand cigarette smoke [emoji30]

Back to poker tomorrow. [emoji453]

Day Eleven - Thursday November 29th

As we’ve been talking about NFL coaches in this thread a little it’s probably worthwhile to mention that I woke up to the news that the calamitous ending by the Bears yesterday cost Matt Eberflus his job.
Maybe he could have survived it if it were a regular game on a full Sunday slate, but with the whole country watching on Thanksgiving and all the talking heads on the networks twisting the knife, he was cooked! [emoji884]
Caleb Williams probably has to take some of the blame but with the game on the line the buck stops with the head coach who didn’t have the presence of mind to call his last timeout with the clock expiring.

Anyway onto poker and it’s the Big Bet Mix Dealers Choice today. These are the choices:

If the last trip was anything to go by we can expect a lot of Badugi and Single Draw.

Anorexic field today. I guess everyone is playing the main. We end up with just 22 entries, of which we are responsible for 2 having had to fire another bullet.

We lost our original bullet in a pretty sick spot.
Early on, 3 handed playing Big O on the turn with the board reading J-K-A-Q with two spades.
Short stack moves all-in for about 4k
We have A-Q-J-T-9
So we have the straight with 3 pair for a re-draw to a full house.
We call.
Now the guy behind me moves all in.
We don’t like this. Obviously he has the straight and a re-draw, probably to the flush.
But the short stack must have something as well?
I almost lay it down but can’t do it. We call.
Short stack does not have the straight. Only the nut flush draw.
The guy behind us has the straight and smaller flush draw. (I would not have shipped with this, very easy for bigger flush draw to be out as was the case)
We’re happy they’re cancelling each other’s outs.
But of course the flush still comes to send us back to the registration line [emoji30]

2nd bullet is more on target and we make the final table of 7. Only 3 will get paid though.

We reach the final table with a below average 50k in chips, (that’s our stack in the vacant 1 seat) but everyone is below average except the guy that cost us our first bullet with the inferior flush re-draw who has a monster stack of 250k which is half the chips in play.
So pretty much the rest of us are fighting for 2nd and 3rd.

We lose 3 players and are 4 handed on the bubble for what seems an age.
The 4 seat doubles up through the chip leader with a cooler in his favor. PLO flop K-9-9 he has quad 9’s versus Kings full. (Must be nice to run good)

So now it’s either us or the 2 seat that will be the unlucky bubble. The 2 seat finds a double so it looks like it’s going to be us that misses out.

The 4 seat is calling single draw which has a bigger BB ante. Smart on his part to pressure the short stacks.

The massive chip leader is raising every pot as he should with his stack.
We make a stand in single draw with a 1 card draw to a 9. He also draws 1 to a 10.
We pair the deuce, but he pairs the 10 and we double.

Same situation on the next round of that game. This time we make a 9 and the chip leader pairs again.

Now the 2 seat is short and to our relief the chip leader finishes him off and we’re in the money.

I only have about 35k when we begin 3-handed play.

I’ve increased to about 60k which is about the same as the other short stack when we play the following hand.

Playing PLO in the BB vs chip leader in the SB.
He raises pre as he always does putting the pressure on.
We defend with 9-8-6-4ds
Flop: J-9-4r
He bets.
We make our stand and move in.
He of course calls with A-K-J-8
Our two pair is ahead.
Turn: 2
We’re still ahead.
River: J
Chip leader makes trips and we’re gone [emoji30]

Still can’t get one of these hands to go my way at a final table.

3rd again for $2,290. At least we make a $1k profit after our two bullets.

The chip leader finished the job soon after as expected.

I notice the casino is packed as I’m walking out. Seems some of my parceros from Medallo are playing tonight. I hate reggaeton but the youngsters seem to like it and there’s lots of young latinas in various states of dress, or undress (depending on which way you look at it) waiting to get in.

I head back to the hotel to watch the Georgia game as I don’t feel like sitting in the book all night again. They eventually win after 8 over-time periods! [emoji44][emoji458]

Day Twelve - Saturday November 30th

We finish our college football work in the morning before heading to the casino.

Put half a unit on all the plays online and another half a unit in the casino as there’s nothing better than cashing tickets [emoji3]

Today’s tournament was Mixed PLO and drew 67 runners.

We didn’t really gain any ground until level 5 where we found the perfect coup playing PLO8
We raised pre from the button with A489ss and got two callers.
Flop: T-7-3r
We c-bet when checked to and then the BB moved in.
We snapped.
Villain only has a naked set of tens with no low draw.
Turn: 5 we’re now guaranteed at least half the pot.
River: J we make the straight and get all the pot.

We’d increased our stack to about 80k when we get moved to balance the tables.

Today was also Day 1B of the main, playing for this mammoth trophy. They didn’t stick their neck out with the $3 million guarantee. Prize pool is $4.5 million.

Back to our pauper tournament and our new table is much more aggressive with lots of pot size bets. Not a fan. I prefer to play small ball.

I get trapped in a multi-way hand that was pot-sized raised pre with A248Q in Big O
Flop: Q-8-6
Checked to us, we bet 25k which is about half pot and get one caller.
Turn: T
Villain now leads out for the pot which is 80k
That would set us all in.
I think our two pair is behind and don’t want to call off all our chips in the hope of a low card coming to maybe get half the pot. We let it go.

Things continued in that vain on my new table. I did not win a single hand and busted on the last hand before dinner.

We added Texas to the college football bets and went back to the hotel to watch it and sweat the rest of the bets.

UTSA +7 [emoji736]
C. Michigan / N. Illinois Under 40 PUSH (we actually got 40.5 on this in the casino so won there)
Eastern Michigan +7 [emoji777]
Marshall / J. Madison Under 52.5 [emoji777] bad beat, lost in OT [emoji30]
App State / Georgia Southern Under 60 [emoji736]
Western Kentucky -1 [emoji736]
Kansas State / Iowa State Over 51 [emoji777] bad beat. 38 points at HT and only 12 in 2H
New Mexico -3 At HT as I write but looking like a loser. We had info the Hawaii QB was going to be out, which he was, and the line closed -6.5 Did not count on the backup throwing 3 TD’s in the 1st half though [emoji30]
Texas money line [emoji736]

So looks like a 4-4-1 day which really should have been 6-2-1

NFL for tomorrow

#461 Tennessee / Washington Over 44
#471 Arizona +3.5
#477 LA Rams -2.5
#480 Baltimore -3

Seems like a solid trip so far. Big bet mix is something I aspire to play someday. Sounds like fun. I just never get an extended chance to learn all the games.

I dabble in sports, though not on the same scale. I threw down some peanuts on JAX/HOU over 44 tomorrow. Seemed like a low line to me for those two teams with Lawrence likely to be back, though I don't claim to be an expert. Last weekend I mashed DET -7 over IND and did well with that one.

Looking at the POR/DAL game tomorrow in the NBA. Blazers have been slept on throughout the season and get Dallas at home off a back-to-back, likely without Luka. Could be worth a look if you want a basketball sweat, though this is not financial advice (aka don't kill me if I'm wrong).

Need more pics of latinas in various stages of undress 😀

I don’t bet sports anymore. I can see you’re on another level with your approach, so I’d like to share some wisdom I picked up. From a failed recreational sports bettor, who’s learned he can’t beat the oddsmakers, and ESPECIALLY not the juice.

When I did bet sports, and I was all excited to bet a college football hunch, I asked myself a simple question: could I name 3 starters on the team, AND the head coach? If no, then seriously reconsider my priors, that I know something the oddsmakers don’t.

For NFL, I had another simple rule. I could bet on a good team vs a good team, or a good team vs a bad team. But NEVER bet on a bad team vs a bad team.

…Anything could happen!

Yes big bet mix is fun. If you can find a small buy-in tournament somewhere it’s worth the price to learn it and you’ll have fun doing it.

JAX/HOU was a stay away game for me. Surprised Doug Pedersen still has a job.

NBA I don’t really start looking at until the playoffs.

When I did bet sports, and I was all excited to bet a college football hunch, I asked myself a simple question: could I name 3 starters on the team, AND the head coach? If no, then seriously reconsider my priors, that I know something the oddsmakers don’t.

Actually, I know a few pro bettors who couldn’t name any players on teams they’re betting on.

A lot of it is math and getting the right number.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Poker Open
Day Thirteen - Sunday December 1st

Not that much to report today.

We played the PLO 8 tournament, firing two bullets at it, but never winning any hand of note and never had the 20k starting stack beyond 30k at any point.

Sometimes you get days like that, not much you can do.

Our NFL bets (as advised last night) faired better, going 3-1 with only the Ravens letting us down.
We swerved SNF. Electing to play cash instead, and we don’t have a good record in snow games anyway [emoji23]
The total actually was interesting. Opened 44.5, closed 45.5 and the game landed 45.

In cash we played 5-card PLO again, but this time 5-5-10. (We were on the wait list for 10-10-25 but never got called)

We got seated quickly on the must move table and stacked a short stack on the first hand with AAKQ8ds when we both made a flush, but ours was higher.
And after that, not much more of interest. It wasn’t really a good game, very tight, no 3-bets or big multi-way pots.
We won a couple of other smaller pots and never made it into the main game as we left after SNF finished which we had been watching on the screens while we played.

In for $1k, out for $2k

Last day tomorrow. Omaha 8 on deck. Let’s hope for a big finish [emoji1696]
