Re-starting - with graphs
Hi everyone,
I'm starting a bankroll challenge. My goal is to run up as high as I can (obviously, like everyone here).
I've played a bit before but never had any lasting success online due to tilt / poor brm.
I took a long break and read a few books, the main one being Jared Tendler's Mental Game of Poker.
Had a few family things happen during this time which also made me re-think my approach to the game, but that book dramatically changed a lot of my thought process.
Also read Linus's original post in 2013 and was inspired 😀
I started in September / October with the daily freerolls on GG. Got very lucky and got enough of a roll to start playing some of the cash games, then got even more lucky and binked a bunch of the thanksgg tourneys.
I moved most of my winnings over to Partypoker (personal choice - softer games and almost identical software.... also seems the runouts are more balanced than on GG but that's just me -_-)
I started playing 5nl initially but I wasn't playing optimally and I also didn't get the best in terms of variance which made me move down to some fast fold 2NL to try and reset.
This is my graph at 2NL since then:

BRM I've decided to follow is play a stake until I get to 100 buy-ins, plus 2 buy-ins at the next stake up.
Then shot take the next stake.
I.e. for 5nl I would need $210 before taking a shot.
Move down when I get back to 100 buy ins at previous stake.
I didn't follow this at my initial 5nl shot which dug me into a bit of a hole.
Luckily I've been able to climb out of that hole and am now getting close to BE at 5NL:

Don't know how often I'm going to update this but am looking forward to having somewhere I can vent frustrations (won't be too much of that I hope) and brag about running good 😃
Graph from beginning of partypoker move:

Quick update;
BR at $277
5NL going really well after beating the 2NL ranks.
overall winning at 5NL but only 3,544 hands played.

Unfortunately partypoker doesn't have a quick fold variant for 5NL so it's a bit of a slog right now.
Next quick fold variant is 10NL. According to current BRM strategy I wouldn't start until BR at $520. Not sure if I'm going to change that strategy yet to hit the quick fold tables sooner.
Need more hands at 5NL before making a decision.
It's been a mental struggle for me at 5NL.
Part of my issue is that I now have to sit at a regular table and watch these whales try to face off against each other by betting their entire stack with A high or bottom pair. And somehow they wind up with top set when I have bottom set or w/e.
I did figure out a compromise though; since BR is hovering around $300 usd now, according to my BRM I can move up to the next stake. Which is $210 for 5NL regular tables, or $220 for 10NL fast fold tables.
On Party there are still lots of fish at 10NL, so I'm still grinding 5NL regular tables but when 10NL quick fold is running hot I'll be checking that out.
Here's the graph so far at 5NL - from the very beginning:

Graph of the whole journey so far:

I'm keeping up with the freerolls on GG and have that up to $50 now.
That site is definitely -ev for me at microstakes. Luckily I'm only using it for freerolls and to convert the cash $ into USD. Occasionally I'll sample the spin and golds but saving my volume for party.
100 buyins before moving up in cash games is very very conservative tho i think you might have to reconsider that maybe.. glgl anyway .
Good luck with your journey! Keep update us!
Thanks everyone 😀
Agreed, 100 buyins very conservative.
I don't want to ever bust with this roll, and looking back over my sample history going -8 or -10 buyins before returning to BE seems to be a normal luck curve for me.
And I want to prove to myself that I can confidently beat a stake before moving up.
Next move up will be when BR hits $520
I've sampled the 25NL pool when it looks good but other than that I've stuck to my 5NL regular tables and 10NL quick fold.
BR currently around $350, GG bankroll hovering around 60$.
Total BR ~ $400.
10NL has been weird, feels like there are better regs but other than that same things happening at 2NL.
Only thing is I can't seem to really sink my teeth into it yet. I run it up but then get run down again, bit of a rollercoaster so far.
It is really nice to see all green here though (only red is slightly losing 8-handed 5NL table over a 200 hand sample... I'm not counting that :P)

My 10NL life so far:

Gonna try to take some time to review hands this week. I feel like I haven't changed my playstyle from my time at 2NL, but when I was thinking through some hands I felt like I may have been over-exploiting in some spots which are creating leaks as I move up. For example, betting in spots when I'm only getting called by better hands, or only seeing villain's busted draws in their range instead of value.
Most of my bad sessions were also when I'm multi-tabling like a mf on my phone. So plan going forward is to try to single table and think through spots a bit better, at least until I get my confidence back.
Only other thing I can think of is that the 10NL pool isn't always good and I haven't confined myself to only playing when it's mid or better. There are times when there are only 5-10 regs playing and no fish.
The 2NL pool was nearly always good and had easier regs.
I should have taken my own advice and slowed down.
I"ve had a few health issues crop up and it's been affecting my play. I could attribute my downswing to hands like these:
PartyGaming - $0.10 NL (6 max) - Holdem - 4 players

Overall, I have decided to take a small break to try and clear some of my personal issues up. Among these issues is pre-carpal tunnel and some actual work-involved mental stress that I have to sort through.
Also decided to move my entire roll (currently ~$300 USD) from GG and Party to Pokerstars. It has more traffic than Party and was the starting point for a lot of pros.
If I'm as good as I think I am, I should be able to figure it out from there. Or at the very least I'll learn something.
Worst case scenario I don't cut it, I can move back to PP and grind out 2NL at a winning rate and earn some extra $$ each month. But I'm hoping I stay dedicated enough to keep moving up.
Here are the current graphs at Party. Currently 10NL quick fold is where I've made all my shitty plays. but my 5NL is looking better. Little wins.

Back again!
BR at $360
Journey on pokerstars so far has been good. Had to learn to tighten up my ranges from my time on Party but it's not been too bad.
Started at 2NL to warm up and then on to 10NL.

Modified my BRM after watching and learning from a few other BR challenges and one incredibly informative vid about what to do at each stake. Didn't agree with everything that was said but it made me rethink some things.
My method now is to not go lower than 10NL if possible. My cutoff point is going to be if my BR hits $200. If that happens my plan is to freeroll back up to $210 and start again.
50 buyin BRM moving forward as well. Still conservative, but focused on progressing through the stakes.
I'm concentrating on learning and progressing my mental game now. No more 4-5 tabling zoom. 2 tables max and trying to focus on thinking about each decision. I'm not making the time to go over every single hand, but I have had some study days which have helped.
Still have some health concerns with the hands but making changes as I go. Luckily i have a 9-5 with a benefits package which has been helping.
This week I had the best day. It was an awful poker day, but my mental game was on point and I didn't falter once, which is a first. I still made mistakes but none of them were due to tilting.
I'm still amazed at how well I handled the swings. Working on making this my default mental state going forward when playing.

I've played a bit on GG, Stars and ARC but convinced Party is the softest by miles for 10nl, but can see stars being a good option for bigger games/moving up and the best software. Interested to see how you get on.
glgl with the grind!

Thanks! My problem with Party is that I'm seriously understudied in heads up and shorthanded games like 3-4 people.
Less volume leads to less full 6-max tables and there's way less volume as you move up from 2NL+5NL. Something to work on for me later but for now I'm working on doing one type of game really well - 6max zoom.
I also had more mental issues with the swings at the time which didn't help
Been awhile, had to take a bit of a break to focus on losing weight.
I know this isn't really the place to do this, but I'm down 35 pounds and back to a comfortable, healthy level. Now focusing more on physique etc but back to poker again.
When I started focusing back in on poker, I tried a bunch of different formats. I tried tournaments, which went well at first but felt the amount of time invested just wasn't for me. Even though the upside was really high and I likely had edge in those micro tourneys.
Then we had a go at AOF. At first it went really well, we were up about $40 at $1 entry. Then decided to move up to $4 since the regs on there all seemed overly loose; like 40% or higher vpip.
Went on a crazy downswing and had to pull the plug. Bankroll at lowest point was like $60 when we pulled out.
So I started again but now on my local area's online site. Everything is in CAD now instead of USD, and unfortunately they don't allow for hand histories to be downloaded, or for HUDS to be used.
I'm tracking everything manually through Excel, but it's going incredibly well. We started the account at around $80 and it's grown like mad.
I've kept up freerolls on other sites and was able to deposit a bit more to the roll and now we're playing 30nl comfortably and winning.
All regular tables so volume is way lower than quick fold days, but here is where everything is at so far:

Total deposits around $340, and bankroll at $815 now.
Plan is to keep plugging away at 30nl and see where that takes us. Will re-assess how we're feeling at $1000 and see if we want to take a shot at full-time 50nl.
I tried a table of 50nl when it was juicy; got a stack from a whale but the table broke after he left so only played 50 ish hands. This site has big volume at 30nl and 100nl so not sure what the next play will be but $1,000 is a pretty good point to start deciding.
This morning my local site was down, happens a lot bc tbh the software isn't great. But decided to use my planned session time to update here instead.
Here are the results so far.

30nl volume is bumping on this site but 10nl and 50nl not so much.
Bumping is a relative term though. Definitely nothing compared to bigger sites like gg or pokerstars. Usually they have 2-3 regular tables going most hours at 30nl on a good day, but stakes like 10nl and 50nl might have 1 table or less during peak hours. 100nl also has good volume, so we're going to try for that soon.
Bankroll snapshot:

We're up to $1,107 at the moment.
Plan is to get to $1,200 then shot take 100nl with 2 buyins. hard cutoff at $1,000. Depending on how we're feeling we may cut off at $1,100 for a quicker rebuild to $1,200.
Here's where our overall winrate is at after nearly 15,000 hands:

Next milestone will be $1,200 which will be our 100nl shot take.
Then after that not sure. Maybe will re-assess our plan when we get to $2,000. Right now my first thought is to stick to 100nl until we have somewhere between 50-100 buyins, then either begin withdrawing profit or shot taking a higher stake on a different site to keep moving up.
Oh. My. God.
We did it.
Beat a reg head's up at 50nl for 2 buyins which brought us out from our minor 30nl downswing and bankroll close to $1,200.
Had to apologize for leaving early after winning those 2 pots but he told me it was all good and he'd see me at the 100nl tables.
Super nice guy. Good player too.
Bankroll up to $1,197, close enough to $1,200 for me to confidently take a shot at 100nl. Hard stop loss at $1,000, soft stop loss at $1,100 depending on how I'm feeling.
Even though I've only played a few thousand hands at each stake, it's pretty clear we'll be able to rebuild if we hit our stop losses. Plus they're regular tables and the fish are abundant on this site.
So I'm still feeling great about the plan at the moment.
Current stats:

I added green arrows to each time I'd made a deposit just to keep this graph honest (mostly from freerolls on other sites):

Going to take the rest of the day to rest up and get mentally ready for the 100nl shot tomorrow.
Hope you are all having as great a day as me! Best of luck in all your endeavours 😀
Bankroll at $1,285.6. It's been a wild ride at 100nl.
Tracking manually sucks, but it's the best I got on this site. The software is terrible, and it's down during my grind times in the morning quite often.
Like today. Hence the update.
We started at 100nl this week, which felt amazing. We went up in the beginning, got the roll up above $1,300 pretty quickly, but then hit a stretch of runbad. We were down -$293 at 100nl at one point and had to start playing 30nl again to re-calibrate mentally. Mixed in 100nl tables when we were feeling better, and managed to eek out some profit during one session.
But then our 30nl tables ran worse. So we went from an approximate 30 bb/100 down to where it is now after losing like 9 buyins in a day. That feels shitty since we were crushing so hard before, but 30nl winrate is still above 12 bb/100 so I keep telling myself it's not something I should be frustrated about.
The 100nl profit evened us out though, and we decided to stick with it. Extended my stop loss down to around $950, and if I was still confident and mentally stable, I told myself we could play until $900 but no more than that.
I think we got down close to $890 at the lowest mid-session.
We've been slowly grinding it back up at 100nl from a -30bb/100 start. Here are our stats currently:

Next mental milestone for me will be $1,500. At that point we'll have 15 buyins at 100nl so we won't be stretching our roll to take the shot, it'll be much more reasonable.
Since 100nl is the last high volume stake on this site, my current goal is to put volume in and get enough hands to confidently establish a winrate. Yesterday I was able to log almost 1,000 hands at the new stake which is a record for me. I don't normally multi-table when shot taking since I'm stretching my roll pretty thin already with the early shot, but it worked out yesterday really well.
Plus all the 100nl tables are BBJ, and the BBJ is around $170,000 for the winner right now. If you're on the table when it happens you get more than $12,000, which is incentivizing me to add a few more tables than I normally would.
The good news, we have considerable edge still. Our losses aren't usually coming from getting it in bad, we're still outplaying the pool but the cards haven't been kind and the regs are tougher than lower stakes.
I was planning my longterm goals, and after we firmly establish ourselves at 100nl with a bankroll of like 50-100 buyins, I want to take a few buyins to another site with good high stakes volume. At that point we'd have a solid fallback to 100nl on this site, so moving temporarily to see if I can hang with the big boys will be nice.
That's it for now.
Nice progress!
It's very underrated how important it is to find the right site to play on so props to you for looking at otions and finding something different that worked.

Thanks! Yeah, I've bounced around a looot. Probably not an ideal amount but I am where I am now due to the experience I guess. The local site is craaazy profitable at low stakes compared to higher traffic sites like GG or stars.
Been a loong time since last update. Longer post incoming.
Last update feels like a lifetime ago, especially in poker terms. So many lessons learned.
Immediately after the last post, I went on this downswing:

It doesn't look like a lot when you zoom out, but that's half my bankroll. gone in a few quick sessions at 100nl. The savage part was I kept questioning myself, like why am I doing this, what did i do to deserve this, I have to be making colossal mistakes, etc.
So i took what was left of my bankroll and decided to go back to stars, at least for a little bit so I could track hand histories and study what was going wrong. The good news is that I found at least a few mistakes each day and worked on them.
My graph is awful. I'd share it but it's actually embarrassing. I started at 10nl zoom and grinded it day in and day out to try to put volume in. Each time I hit a spot I didn't know I was able to stop playing and look it up to see how I did.
Then after sessions I'd review some more.
I fixed some bigger mistakes, and then started working on smaller ones. Some I didn't even realize were there, like tilt-induced ones (ex. calling off a draw when I'm not getting the right odds, etc.)
In the end I went down about 20 buyins at 10nl zoom, grinded it back to something like only 15 buyins down, then called it.
I'd stopped finding as many mistakes, which felt good. But even then I wasn't making anywhere near as much as the local site. The rakeback was nice, but winrate just wasn't as lucrative.
So at that point, feeling like I'd fixed at least some of my leaks, I made the move back to PlayNow.
This is where the graph is at now:

I'm super proud of this. We did it.
Journey is not gonna be 100%, but I have a better grasp of the game and so far I haven't allowed tilt to creep in after my experience at 10nl zoom.
Fully aware that a good player should be beating 10nl zoom at a decent rate on stars, but I wasn't able to do it in the short time I was there. For context I put about 25,000 hands in and was overall down 15 buyins when I left.
However, I know for a fact I can beat the playnow stakes currently at a good enough clip to build a much bigger bankroll than I would by grinding and learning 10nl zoom. Here's the winrate stats:

Main volume for me at the moment is 30nl. Bankroll target is $2000, we're sitting pretty at $1,360. At $2,000 we're gonna think about trying some 100nl again, but for now we're sticking to 50nl (when it's running) and 30nl. I jumped into a 100nl table briefly when it was full of fish but other than that I've steered clear of it completely.
Also, I made a few fun little snapshots in my excel sheet to give me some motivation. Today we ran a little poor, got AA in vs KK but board ran out 6789T for a chop, then lost a set over set. I'm taking that -$12 as a win.
Oh and we started back on this site around 19 October, so last month only played about 1.5 weeks, hence the low volume.

Right now my hand goal per month is 40,000, but I'd be ok with landing somewhere close to 30,000. This should put me on target to make about $700 per month if all goes according to plan, putting me at 100nl sometime in december.
Oh and some additional motivation for me; me and the fam are moving soon and our mortgage is going to be much higher. Still affordable, but I've decided that, if needed, I can withdraw 1/3 of my profits each month to cover some expenses. Obviously takes longer to grow a bankroll like that but it is what it is.
I was planning on updating this consistently but that's obvs not been the case. I'll definitely update again when I make it to 100nl, but not sure if I'll get to it before then.

Just re-read through the entire thread, hard to believe it's nearly been a year already. Lots has changed, went from a quick fold fanatic to a regular table grinder. Changed sites so many times, lifestyle changes, etc. It's been a journey.
But happy where I've ended up.
Future who knows? was thinking about what the next step would be after we crush 100nl, and I'm not sure. I know I'll have to change sites, so maybe something like coinpoker or 888 might be next for me after that. I watch KDJ regularly and he is able to beat the games above 100nl fairly consistently on 888.
That's way off in the future though; even if we assume best-case-scenario, I'm hitting 200nl around April 2026 at the earliest.
Thanks for listening to me ramble.
Well, we packed the house, moved, unpacked it, then bought a bunch of furniture so feels like we've unpacked everything like 2-3 times.
Place is mostly together, it's a really nice home and it's been great for the fam so far so I'm happy about it even though it's a lot more work.
Starting with the not so great news first;
1) haven't had much time to grind poker at all since last post. According to my trackers I've only played about 14, 000 hands.
2) I went through all my finances and ev-maxed them, which means cheaping out on all of them haha.
Because of that, my IP address doesn't show me where I actually live anymore, and messed with the PlayNow location verification system. Basically I can't play there without going through the lengthy process of swapping providers again, which I'm not going to do (saving more than $100 monthly rn).
3) I didn't hit my goal of getting to 100nl by December.
And now for the good news!
I've had to take my poker away from the playnow site and try other sites again. I decided to go with 888 for now, and that's been going great so far. Good decision for now.
Only played about 2000 or so hands since I'm still getting used to the layout, pool, and software etc. But we're already beating most of this pool at a good clip. Only sucky thing is the regular tables break super often since there are so many bumhunters, so it takes constant monitoring to reopen new ones.
Pokertracker, which I bought last year, is finally able to make an impact whereas with Playnow it was just wasted space since they don't save hand histories. I'm gonna finally be able to post some hands and I don't have to manually track everything by Excel anymore 😃
As far as where the bankroll is at currently, we moved to 888 with about $1, 740 in CAD, which turned into around $1200 - 1230 USD.
We're now sitting pretty at $1387.50 USD.
BRM I decided on to go forward is 21 buyins per stake. So right now we're in the 50nl streets, next moveup will be at $2100 for 100nl.

Well... we hit a really deep runbad on 888 right after last post.
Been really struggling to get anything going at all, and it's been super demoralizing to run this bad soon as we move over and commit to the site and stake.
Popped down to lower stakes to try and gain some momentum but even that's been going poorly.
Here's the graph:

In case we're counting, that's about -$700 so far and still going. Worst part is we keep running into spots like these, against the wildest fish. And somehow they're finding folds against our nutted hands when they weren't before.

I've avoided putting more routine coolers out there, like us getting it in with KK and losing to AA, or jamming AK as a 5-bet and getting called by 99 or worse, but rest assured that's happening a lot too.
Feeling emotionally drained but still motivated. Reviewed a bunch of spots and I still have made some mistakes, but likely due to tilt/frustration. Not an excuse at all, just is the main reason why it's happening and definitely something I need to fix. But only accounts for maybe a buyin out of the more than 10 that we're down.
Regardless, I have some work to do. Looking forward to the end of this runbad section of the graph though.
Hope everyone has been having a better week than I have lol.
why are you leading with AK on river 9, is this river supposed to help your range?
why not just check raise turn to non commit size so you can work in some bluffs and then jam river?
You're right, 9 does nothing for our range on the river.
In that hand my thought process was to make villain's pocket pairs feel strong and put more bluffs in our range for river. if we xr turn even for small size it'll feel too Kx heavy to villain and we could get him to fold hands that we don't want him to fold.
I could be miles off but I think this hand was fine, we only lose to specifically 99 or K9 that takes this line and we'll get called by any bluff catch pocket pairs, sometimes jammed on by worse Kx that we dominate and obvs the FH that gets there.
Time for a downswing update! If there was a title I would call it something like:
"It Never Ends.....!"

My mental is not so great atm with the game. But I guess I've gotten into a rhythm....? Sort of. Oh and changing the graph to BB instead of $$ has me feeling a lot better about it.
I'll start a session fresh and ready to crush, I crush, then when I get hit with a ridiculous beat I'll check my emotions and insta-close tables if I'm feeling off. Really sucks that that's what my game has turned into but atm it's the only thing that's keeping me going. The idea of forcing myself to keep playing and hitting bad runouts is just... the worst. Can't make myself do it.
But I can make myself take a break, check my play after, and come back fresh when I've processed some emotions.
I've gone back and forth on how I'm handling this, questioning strategies and whether I should quit. Struggling to force more volume out of myself and putting emotions aside to grind out of the downswing.
I thought I could handle downswings but the problem is that I haven't proven myself at 888 yet. I had a long track record of winning on my previous site, but I'm very anxious about whether I can make it on 888 or any other site. So far no bueno on 888.
So volume has been shitty. Downswing has been shitty. But after reviewing everything so many times I know that i'm not playing terribly. I'm actually proud of how I'm playing given what's happened.
What's keeping me going atm is that this is just a 25, 000 hand sample, and we're only down 1650 bb's. Still a lot, but 16.5 buyins in terms of a downswing is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
I've dropped down to 30nl and hey, you know what? It's above breakeven. I'll take it.

Tried playing some snap and other formats but didn't work out either. only thing that's working right now is calling it quits when I'm feeling off, and continuing to play regular tables, changing the number of tables based on how my mental is.

Think that's it for now. Don't want to inundate with bad beats and make this thread too whiny, although I think I've done that already.
I guess I'll end with this; Currently feeling optimistic when we finally make it to the other side, but anxious about how long it will take.
