On the grind, one more time

Hi,

Half way through January seems like a good time to make a goals thread for 2025 to help keep motivation. Long term goal for year is to be beating low stakes comfortably - I'm not sure this is a mechanical/game theory problem rather a mental block when climbing stakes as I've attempted this multiple times in the past. I've setup a mini gym this year and decided to quit some time consuming non productive activities ( drinking, competitive gaming etc ). Two things that for whatever reason go hand in hand for me.

Here's NL graph and results from 2024 where I started in Jan and quit in April of last year. I also played some over winter. After April I got sucked into gaming and lost the motivation for poker, for like 6 months I didn't play at all. Also starting drinking a bit too regularly too on weekends and as everyone knows that has a profound negative impact on mental health and motivation. If I take anything from the year it's that I should have just played much more volume at 50nl and alcohol is pure poison for the soul. General anxiety and performance related issues overcame the drive to succeed. Rakeback I didn't keep track of but it wasn't hugely significant.

Results by Stake

Here's the graph so far this year. I believe I'm up around 150e~ in RB

And results by stake

Sometime down the line I might make a discord server with the intention of helping people at struggling at micros as it's something I used to do regularly in the past, but if I do end up going that route it won't be a while and I want to be sure mentally I'm in a good place with a solid life routine. For now it's just getting into a good mindset and not procrastinating about moving up in stakes. Volume/Monetary goals are secondary to me this month. I've started some light training and bought a big dip station over xmas but I've yet to set it up 😃 I'll get to that over the next few days.

Light training ( once dip station setup will be able to do a lot more )

I'll try post some regular updates and some interesting/exploit type stuff when it comes to micro stakes. In my opinion there's not a tonne of good content out there for beginners or for people who are struggling to do well at the lowest stakes. Most of the content is too advanced and overwhelming and not super applicable to the meta of how people play down there. I'll try to follow most of the other NL threads on this forum as it helps keeps me motivated. GL on the grind!

Month update. Pretty happy with volume and results overall considering the stakes. Had Light exercise every day, still haven't gotten around to setting up dip station need to find a space for it but really need to push myself to set it up tomorrow so there's a bit of variety in workout shedule. No alcohol at all this month, I'm happy with that, wasn't even tempted. Bit of gaming on switch to chill out and watch some streams but nothing "competitive" and non productive that will wear me out mentally.

I barely played any 50nl. Took a shot a while back, was a trainwreck session lost good few BI in about a 100 hands. Objectively there was a bad hand in there and another questionable play(A5s 5b jam on broken hu table vs clicker), but the rest were just coolers. AK twice vs AA/QQ losing, and whale rivering a gutter vs an overpair in bloated pot. The hand below is foldable OTR, yeah we have trips but guys like this just nutted once they donk turn, even turn donk I knew I was dead but I was getting hammered so much already I had stopped caring by that point. I quit session after that hand. V just one of these guys who I perceive to be super nitty that donk pummels value and never has bluffs.

I'm not sure about this hand, I had quick look in solver and it does call river TxTh a lot with a certain combo but not mine. I like villains line it's just very hard for him to have bluffs by the river imo. The sim I checked he's meant to big bet turn IP most likely to fold out more underpairs. There's something about Kxx lockdown boards even pre solvers I used to think about a lot and when he bet turn for that size I was like in my head "you don't get to dictate this pot on this type of board", in all honesty river was just a FU call, was too steamed by that point to care. It's likely bad when flush completes. What bluffs does he really have by the river besides floated AQ, it's hard to think of many .. mayb some wheel Ax

This month I'll not play any 10nl at all, except maybe 5-10 mins to warmup if there's days I feel totally zoned out. I want to try play 50k hands with 20nl as main and get more sessions of 50nl in especially on weekends. There's def a physiological issue going on with attempting 50nl long term. There's some good players in the poole too, a lot better that what's below so maybe that's part of it. 10+20nl I can just play sloppy or borderline autopilot and still know what i'm doing vs pretty much every player in that poole maintaining good edge. Buddy suggested mental game coach if I run into problems again so that's something different to try when time comes. Objectively too I did run super hot at 20nl, that type of W/R ain't sustainable long term but 15bb might be if focused every session and playing good hours. On avg I played around 3hrs a day always at night.

I own GTO+ I found some great tutorials on youtube yday so that's something I can spend a good chunk of time setting up properly. 10/20 etc not really needed but 50 there's more structure to both pre and post so it won't hurt. Initially set up trees for BTN vs BB and SB vs BTN 3b and go from there I think.

Another main goal for Feb is maintaining better sleep schedule getting into a solid routine for meals. Sleep side It's a habit I need to break I end up staying up late watching movies etc and feel groggy as hell the next day. It effects mood a lot and obv don't want to be feeling tilty even before sitting down to grind. I think for the most part this month mental discipline has been good but besides that 50nl session but I immediately quit when I knew I had hit breaking point.

No drinking 😃

Gym sheet I already posted above, doing pretty much same work just slightly more reps and sometimes bit longer on bike too. Need that dip station sorted asap. Will update again in a week or two, gl to every one in February!
