Last bullet in the chamber - NL2

Hello hello, I would like to introduce myself.

A few years back I tried to become a professional poker player.
I climbed from nl2 to nl5 but after I took a shot at nl10 and lost I got discouraged, plus I was immature and easily frustrated with bad beats.
I also didn't have a good mindset for improving, I would also get upset at the skill displayed by better players rather than be inspired by them.

Today I am back because I'm having some difficulties at my job and it's very likely I'm gonna be let go soon.
I am already looking for a different job but also I would like to give the poker game one more serious try now that I'm older, more mature and experienced.
I always liked the game and I was good enough to win against the passive/nit pool of nl2 and nl5 in GGPoker but my mentality issues held me back, I would like to get the freedom and income that a real professional poker player gets.

So far I've been reading Modern Poker Theory by Michael Acevedo and I've been playing some NL2 rush to de-rust because even my preflop is a bit off right now, I would like to use this forum to review hands and get advice on how to best improve.

For example, what do you guys think about getting a GTOWizard membership? Unlimited GTO practice for 50 bucks seems pretty good to me. Doesn't mean you will always apply a GTO approach but knowing the ranges that we are supposed to play can help decisionmaking regardless

I will update often if not everyday, wish me luck! I know I can do it

My advice would be to get a job, save up money from the job. In the meantime, pay for GTOWizard Elite in the meanwhile so you can practice be AI solves. When you have enough saved up, start playing NL25 online - you will lose and that’s fine, you’re learning. Keep improving every day and when you have more money saved up, start playing the lowest stake live. You will quickly adjust your newly acquired GTO knowledge to playing these games and start crushing

For what it’s worth, playing as a pro isn’t the best choice for most people. There’s much less stress, much less insecurity in having a job aside playing poker. I don’t think being a standalone pro is the best choice for most people.

What is a standalone pro?

GTO wizard for 2NL 5NL 10NL 25NL is not that good. To win you have to adapt to your opponent, gto strategies are not that profitable.

Even the best regular is playing far different than the solver is playing. If you try to replicate the solver a lot you will lit money on fire. You will call a lot when you shouldn't, you will bluff a lot in spots where population does not arrive on the river with the same range as the solver does.

Gto wizard can only help you to understand theory better. To learn new exploits with it you need to node lock. The problem with node locking is overdoing it.

They say you can justify any play with node locking.

The best feature on gtowizard are the drills. But you need to know which spots you are doing bad for that to work faster.

I know spots where I'm confused or don't really know the best way to procede but I think the best would be to find a coach who is affordable and can help me find leaks and stuff to work on every week

Right, the point of learning GTO is not to copy it, the point is to acquire a more profound understanding of each spot and why we do the things that we do, thru Game Theory we can understand every choice in the tree

So yesterday night I was playing a few hands of NL2, again, trying to de-rust, get thinking about poker more and I won this bad beat jackpot lol.

Now I think I can definitely try to go for nl10 when I feel more confident in my game

So today was a good day, I'm fairly certain I am beating the nl2 tables from what I've seen.

I've been watching a lot of MMAsherdog, I'm finding his videos on BTS very inspiring. Showing me tricks I never knew before.
For example, did you know there are country-based reads? Apparently brazilians and scandinavians are seen as aggresive, on the other hand, germans are seen as nitty.

Anyways I don't think I'm gonna be playing nl2 anymore. I think I can beat nl5 no problem. Wish me luck!

Good luck on NL5! Will follow your poker journey.

Yes you should try NL5 and move back to NL2 if it goes wrong, gl mate

I hated my job

I hated it. I hated the customers. I hated some of my bosses. I hated the "coaching" and I hated taking calls.

I had two options:

1. Keep working the safe job that I hate.
2. Quit and risk spending my whole day to playing and improving at poker. With no real guarantee that I can make it to earning a decent wage (1k usd a month)

All of this in past tense because today I got fired, so I have been forced to take the second option.
I'm gonna have some money from getting fired as well as help from my mom so I should be fine to take like... 2 or 3 months without making any more money.

Will I make it? Yes. I will. I am the best poker player I've ever been and I was always a winner. Now the difference is I am actually gonna work hard. I've worked really hard for McDonald's and this call center. Now it's time I work hard for myself. To become even better and crush. I'm going all-in. I will try to update but I don't know if I will always have it in me. Things might get hard and I might retreat for some time. But I will be back to posting here eventually. Trust the ****ing process.

I think it's cool you're willing to take a risk to escape a job you hate! However, I don't want you to get disheartened when you don't meet your goals.

You are playing 5nl with a goal of making 1k/ month. It's not that this is not guaranteed; it's that this is not possible.

Even if you had a massive massive winrate of 20bb/100 (you're not even sure you are a winner) you would need to play 100,000 hands a month to meet your goal.

Why not use these months while you have support to get a part time job at least, grow your bankroll that way, study, and then give yourself a chance by playing 25nl.

Then I will play 200,000 hands a month

Hey all, I've been putting off writing this next thing but I think it's time.

My grind didn't go as well as I thought, not because I'm not winning, but because I am just not happy playing.
I'm very anxious and depressed at the moment, obviously it's not poker's fault, it's the result of life circumstances and decisions, ways of thinking and mistakes. I even came to the suicidal ideation this week.
My mental game leaks have been just too big these last 2 months and as such I was not able to make poker my profession just yet. I will look to get a new job soon and keep working on my mental health as well as playing poker as long as I can keep a handle on the anxious feelings it can sometimes provoke in me.

Still, I am happy I tried for this time and this is definitely not the last that NLHE will hear from me. I fully expect to break out of the economic situation I'm in through playing cards in the next, say, year or two. My initial goal was just impossible.

Sorry if you find this disappointing. Best of luck to you all at the tables.
