my understanding of theoretical physics has changed a lot after leaving liberal arts college and come to a research institution/university

2018 i got here and was pretty clueless about particle physics - what formal v phenom mean...

i was a very studious kid and finished two years of coursework in my first year of grad school so i can get started on research.

covid happened
i took my last class which was advanced supersymmetry and i wasn't getting concrete results in research since there were a Lot of coding involved.

i semi gave up during covid and didnt pass my oral exam in june 2021 after experiencing a monster personality shift due to chinese online gaming - in the next couple years i just pokered and gambled.

theres obv more to it but the most logical reason i can provide for not finishing is just the stuff is hard, it's so much talent based - i maybe top 1% in the world population in terms of iq but bottom 1% in the pool of theoretical physicists.

The extra complication is the lack of citizenship - been here on student visa since 2014 - it is so messed up. i am so qualified to be an american than majority of the non americans out there...yet...

Moved and properly seconded on DT’s post, I finished my grad schooling and made sure that paperwork can be useful if I ever needed to go back in to that particular field. I am however severely understudied in poker and play minimal stakes. I know nothing about the international student/visitor woes but getting a job in any casino (you don’t play in) dealing poker or in the pit since you are familiar with most of the games wouldn’t be a bad idea might help extend visa.

Side note: my grad school stipend wouldn’t have been able to bankroll me for 80/160 rofl

i had 3 years of stipend saved up plus some money saved from college - although wasnt saving it for gambling - but its a nice starting roll. Then before i started playing poker i was in danger of deportation so i didnt renew my lease in downtown davis, instead i stayed in my office. It was a big office shared by two of us - ample space - but clearly i was inconsiderate. Then in summer 2022 i started poker seriously and continued to stay in the office - the narrative became "jimmy was gambling so he didnt get an apartment" - but i know there was no casual effect. Upswing came when i consistently played the 5/10 plo game for the third time and achieved a $70-90 winrate. Befriending Forrest accelerated my growth and confirmed my stance that you can play a stake in limit games without that much roll unlike in bigbet. If you have 16k roll, you can buy in 2000 and go play 80/160. Honestly, it's fine. If you lose the one rack, you can buy in another rack only if the game is good. Altho if we stick to the 5% rule, you want to have 40k roll before buying in for 2k in a game but to me if i lose 2k in 80/160 i can make it back in smaller games so i dont worry about that. in fact in the last two weeks i lost back a lot of profit i had at bellagio then some. i know how big of a loss 3000 is in that game and I had back to back to back two-rack losses in that game - makes me wanna puke. it is not a big financial setback for me now but imagine if I only had 16k then losing 12k would be detrimental.

it's hard to explain what my understanding was when i first started 4/8 omaha hilo at Stones in citrus heights but there were two things that were going for me aside from already having some money - 1) i grew up on limit mahjong n 5c stud so i am qualified in terms of card sense; 2) i am a nit from day 1 in o8 and many people in norcal can second that. (In nl, however, i used to love squeezing n tripling barrel off stacks, esp w AJo for some reason.) Then coming to vegas n having the balls to play in nejad n yeh's rw 80 game as a complete noob was just my desire to play big. It was summer 2023 i played two tours at wsop n had 200 hours rep in 40 and 80. Won 3k in 40 n lost 6k in 80. Fishy fish.

Lastly there were definitely spots where i absolutely crucially urgently ran hot to get my ass bailed out n i wont ever overlook the luck factor.

i expect some animosity n hostility esp from certain individuals who i beefed - at the end of the day - like my friend who passed away told me - Hope u live happily everyday. - and i wouldnt wanna be anywhere outside the casino - maybe Harvard's library if i luckbox a postdoc bink.

This reads like you are actually extremely intimidated by people with skill/success in the game that you are playing and are planning on weak-tighting until you have a small enough stack to jettison into the middle hoping for a flip.

ye i got the $1100 ticket n used it for the 1100 plo and busted one orbit into it
