VPIP Calculation

VPIP Calculation

Struggling with some basic VPIP calculation here.

VPIP is defined by #put money into pot / #opportunity to put money into pot.

Look at this example: Hero 2bet (18% of the time) -> Villain 3bet (6%) -> Hero call 3bet (50%).

What's Heros VPIP?

(1) Hero had twice the chance to put money into the pot (2b or fold and call 3b or fold) => VPIP = 0.18/2 + 0.5/2 = 0.34 (seems too high and unreasonable)

Probably better to include some frequencies:

(2) VPIP = 0.18 + 0.18 * 0.06 * 0.5 = 0.18 + 0.0054 = 0.1854

(3) VPIP = 0.18 * 0.94 + 0.18 * 0.06 * 0.5 = 0.1692 + 0.0054 = 0.1746

I lean more towards (2) and VPIP increasement. What's correct?

Only cares about the first time you invest in the pot. Its #invested anything/total hands

Any hand where you add money to the pot, other than the blinds, counts +1 in the numerator. The denominator is just number of hands played. Calling a 3 bet after having opened doesn’t affect VPIP any differently than the initial open does.

Is this just preflop or does it consider post-flop as well. If it is limped to you in the BB and you check, I would think it doesn't count as a hand played or a hand VPIPed - regardless of what happens post-flop. But I certainly don't know if that is the case. Anybody know for sure?

VPIP = VOLUNTARILY put money in pot. Checking preflop does not put money in the pot voluntarily. If you invest anything at any point after that then yes of course it counts
Honestly the stat does exactly what the name suggests
