The Republican presidential nominee, who has been vocal in his criticism of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, reportedly asked Putin “what do you think?” when the pair met in Hamburg in 2017, according to The New York Times.
Trump has wildly claimed Putin “would never have gone into Ukraine” if he were president and has touted his “very good relationship” with him several times.
The meeting — which took place three years after Russian forces invaded the Crimean peninsula — was “an opening” for Putin to begin exploiting Trump’s “escalating political grudge” against Ukraine in a bid to weaken US support for the country, officials who were privy to the exchange have shared with the newspaper.
Trump had only been in office for seven months when the pair met. Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson attended the meeting, which was “a masterclass” by Putin to mold the relatively new president’s approach to Ukraine, according to The Times.

the purported provocation was supposedly the bipartisan attempt to enlarge NATO to include as many European ex-soviet countries as possible.

My guess is that Putin was afraid that NATO would have an impact on Russia's nuclear weapons in the Crimean Peninsula.
Under Obama Russia took over Crimea so that they would maintain control over their nuclear weapons. There was also a very significant Russian population there so it was not only easy to do but easy to maintain.
It is hard to say what exactly Trump's relationship with Putin was during his term. Given that Putin had overtly supported Trump during his campaign for President by hacking into the Clinton campaign's emails.

My guess would be that Putin did not want to put Trump in the awkward situation of not being able to be re-elected if he supported Putin's war efforts in Ukraine. And Putin was happy that Trump was not a NATO fan.
Once Biden was President Putin could use that as leverage against him. In a way it makes it easier for Trump to become President again which would suit Putin. It may also be that Putin did not want NATO expansion to interfere so he attacked early thinking he could just take over all of Ukraine. Who aside from Afghanistan knew that Russia would be unable to take over Ukraine quickly?

President Trump will now be using the military to transport him around (don't be startled if you see him in a vc25a (an "air force one"). The administration everyone thinks they have right now is starting to step aside, since they're finally figuring out they won't be able to do what they did last time. Too many crack downs. Also Walz is about to be taken out of the race for some past troubles. I wonder what the narative will be next week, maybe he comes down with a bad illness and needs to step aside (just my guess, don't hold me to it).
