British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Tory leadership contest is quickly turning into farce. Trump has backed Boris, which should be reason enough for anyone with half a brain to exclude him.

Of the other candidates Rory Stewart looks the best of the outsiders. Surprised to see Cleverly and Javid not further up the betting, but not sure the Tory membership are ready for a brown PM.

Regarding the LD leadership contest, Jo Swinson is miles ahead of any other candidate (and indeed any of the Tory lot). Should be a shoe in.

Finally, it's Groundhog Day in Labour - the more serious the anti-Semitism claims get, the more Corbyn's cronies write their own obituary by blaming it on outlandish conspiracy theories - this week, it's apparently the Jewish Embassy's fault...

Badenoch is on fire and spot on identifying the lethal threat to society posed by leftism. A domestic threat for the UK, like in all western countries.

I didn't notice this was from an interview with Bari Weiss's Free Press, which I subscribe to. The full interview is well worth a listen.

It's also about way it's done. The shaming approach is appallingly stupid. The lack of serious policies on the big political issues is even worse.

Yes, this. Taxing farmers, pensioners and private schools has good optics for a small minority on the left, but they have raised next-to-no money doing these things and they are an easy way to haemorrhage votes to the right and Labour just don't have the mandate (by way of the popular vote) that they can afford to do this.

Conservatism is as necessary as progressivism to stop runaway societal anxiety and disorder (and in the worst cases decay and disaster). Progress should be waves slowly going up the beach, slightly receding, but then coming back slightly stronger, but ultimately moving higher and higher.

Not a tsunami just because the unsilent minority demand it.

Or like a bicycle moving forwards despite parts of it moving in the opposite direction, whichever direction that may be.

I agree that trying to shame people who have no shame is a waste of time.

Badenoch is a privileged privately educated snob who brazenly lies about the recent history of Nigeria in the hope that no one will correct her.

My family, one of whom is staying with us this weekend, lived through the chapter she talked about recently and her description of it was unrecognisable to them.

Badenoch is a black woman who proves you can have massive success in your life being a black woman, which means every single black woman who doesn't get the same is responsible for that, not "the system".

That what makes you angry. She is the living proof to racism exists and black women if capable can achieve everything in life, which means every black woman who doesn't, doesn't because of her choices not because of any for of sexism or racism.

I understand how psychotic the living proof everything you believe is objectively false can make you, but you gotta learn to live with actual reality .

Which is if you are good at the game of life, being a black woman isnt goubg ti be a problem at all to achieve anything you desire. Not managing to get what you want is exclusively your personal lacking. You playing bad at the game of life.

It's particularly stupid when directed at people who do feel shame.

and far worse of a waste of time. It's fantastic for the extremsits/populists

Luciom, one of us is someone who had a good and long career in IT for a variety of companies, and the other is a fascist loser spending most of his waking hours on an obscure message board trying to walk the thin line between permissible and bannable content, and frequently failing.

What I don't like about Badenoch is the snobbery and deceit as well as the extremist policies. You trying to portray her as having the background of the median black person is pathetic when she's a cousin of an ex Vice President of Nigeria and her parents were upper middle class Nigerians who sent her to a private International school in Lagos and who married a wealthy Scottish banker.

So dishonest is she that she claims to have been a "straight As candidate" in Nigeria but only attained a D in A level Maths here in the UK, a result which she solely attributes to the poor education system here. LOL at that. I went to a shitty state school in London and like many others fared a lot better than her, and her refusal to own her own failures is hypocritical.

She's a diabolical person who the white Tory establishment has (over)promoted to do their racism for them, talking her up to be super-intelligent as a cover for their rather obvious intentions.

by BOIDS k

tories putting a black woman in charge of their party is really something. looking forward to five years of middle class and upper middle class white guys scolding her over race issues

and we're in, lets go

If you think an upper middle class party leader identifies with their race before their class you really need to think a lot harder about these things.

It’s the same concept of because one from a poor environment (or middle class) became a billionaire then all of them should be able to and so it’s their fault if they can’t right ?

Everyone in the world have the same chance , opportunities, environment to actually achieve what is an exception ….?

So in actually what you are saying is that girl isn’t special at all even she is one of very few who actually achieve it .

FYP. The idea that anyone succeeds or fails in life purely down to their choices is not true. People are not rational actors and there are differences in personality, intelligence and so on that mean some people just don't have the hardware to make optimal choices.

As far as race goes, she is proof that class>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>race I'll give you that. However, I'm, sure she has faced a lot of racism in her life, particularly if some of the posting in this thread is anything to go by.

That's true, and some of the most egregious examples of racism in this thread were you claiming numerous times that immigrants are criminal.

Mandelson called back. Economy/stock markets looking shaky.

And zero decent opposition.

Well, at least it's not as bad as America.

Or France or Germany or S Korea or Canafa or ....

There just may be something more fundamental going wrong.

I wonder how much longer Jones will be allowed to attack the UK establishment?

BRUSSELS — Nigel Farage has spent the last decade giving Tory prime ministers nightmares. Now it seems he’s scaring new Labour PM Keir Starmer, too.

During a private meeting at the European Parliament in Strasbourg this winter, Starmer’s Brexit Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds was quizzed by members of the European Parliament about why his government’s proposed reset with the EU appeared relatively timid.

Despite high expectations in Brussels following the election of the new government in July after 14 years of Tory, largely Euroskeptic rule, Starmer spent much of the autumn saying what he wouldn’t do: no customs union, no single market, and no freedom of movement. Visas for young people or the Erasmus student exchange scheme? No plans.

According to one EU official present at the recent talks, Thomas-Symonds told the MEPs he’d love to do more — but that Nigel Farage’s upstart, Europhobic Reform outfit had come second to Labour in 89 constituencies at the election, making a closer embrace of the EU politically problematic.

“He was apologetic — he said he wanted to go further,” the EU official present told POLITICO. Seemingly unimpressed, the official added: “I don’t understand being scared of your own shadow in the first six months of your five year term.”

Being scared is a Starmer specialty, which is why he excelled as a prosecutor.

So spineless and dishonest

What a tragedy.

The two brothers at Manchester airport who fought with police and ended up being kicked in the head by them have been charged with assaulting police officers, but no charges are being brought against any police officers involved and the suspension of one of the officers has been lifted.

And this was the case that brought condemnation from the Reform party for being an example of "two tier policing".

That is the one where the "fight" started when one of the guys completely knocked out a female officer and broke her nose, right? That one made the news here.

If you want to have a discussion whether there should even be female police officers that is fine. But given your country (and mine) does have female police officers, I think it is a good rule that physically much larger men dont get to just knock them out when you think they are getting out of line.

You're missing the point of the story. It's not about whether people think that having a rumble with the police is going to land someone in the court. It's about the usual far right elements incorrectly prejudging the decision that hadn't yet been made by the DPP over whether to prosecute them and/or the police, and calling it "two tier policing" in an attempt to rabble rouse.

I actually head a good point about this once. I've seen a few videos of female officers getting shoved around or struggling to make arrests and it makes them look incompetent. However, female officers are also much better at deescalating than male officers, so many incidents are nipped in the bud in a way that probably wouldn't happen if it was just male officers.

As for the incident, meh. It was always going to be a very high profile case compared with the relative triviality of the offence, and I think it was probably prudent to make sure the evidence was watertight which explains the delay.

As for the office not being charged with any offence on balance that's probably right too. Two police officers are still under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct and probably deserve some kind of reprimand.

QFT. Those dam Christians (and people who look like Christians) and their festivals...

The perpetrator was Saudi, but all indications he has very extreme right wing politics (Tommy Robinson style), so will be interesting to see where the right and left wing social media ecosystems go with this one.

He is also a psychiatrist, so could just be an issue of getting high on his own supply and going crazy, and politics weren't really involved.
