The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

Maybe the girls from Utah can compete for Italy in the next Olympics and receive gold medal money for quitting mid match.

On the road so mostly been setting up shop in various sportsbooks across the Midwest lately

Really sad seeing all the campaign ads targeting Kamala supporting free gender surgeries for criminals and detainees

Not because it’s crazy for the government to provide those for free to them while general population of non criminals and citizens need to pay for it themselves - because that is literally insane

But it’s really sad that they turn it into some nasty transphobic hate speech talking about how disgusting trans people are and we can’t have a pro trans president- which is an abhorrent statement to make

Just such an incredibly stupid unforced error where they could have simply made it about government providing cosmetic surgeries for free but instead decided to go hard in the paint and make it about hating trans instead - which is so stupid particularly because they could have easily attained that without even saying it. The people they were going for were going to feel that anyway

Just so dumb and terrible

We are closing the trans thread.

If there are specific instances of social issues relating to transgender issues that arise, then specific threads can be made relating to them.

The general debate over what constitutes transgender identity is done for now. The transgender identity is not inherently political and will no longer be treated as such.

Thank you
